I enjoyed the spectacle (okay, when I could see it) of the episode but any time I think more about it, it irks me.

Does it bother anyone else that we ended up with several Valyrian steel weapons in the hand of Brienne, Jaime, Jon Snow etc and not a single one of them came up against a White Walker?

What I would have been happy with (if Arya had to be the one):

People with Valyrian steel weapons fighting off the White Walkers while Jon goes toe to toe with the Night King defending Bran. He fails... on the ground, ready to die, then Arya sneaks in with the final blow. This would have:

a) had Jon's arc/destiny feel fulfilling of going 1v1 vs the big bad
b) gave the valyrian steel weapons some purpose
c) alleviated any issues people had with Arya sneaking past the WW; they'd be fighting
d) still provided the audience with a twist
e) seen no retcon of Arya's destiny

I think it has to be because the Night King is less a scheming villain and more a machine. He's basically programmed by the Children of the Forest to kill all humans and see the Three-Eyed Raven as a threat due to their ability to retain all knowledge of the history of men.

I know it's not satisfying for a lot of people, but to me it seems the best explanation.

Only problem is he's been scheming for 8000 years, has the greenseer ability, and has shown numerous times the ability to plan and execute convoluted traps.
Didn't we all justify the ice dragon 'chains in the lake' thing with the Night King designing the entire scenario? Pulling in multiple characters and threads just so he could get a dragon to break down the wall.

So Bran lured him into a trap. Where's the stroke and counterstroke, two all-seeing masters going head to head, the final gambit?

Good twists don't require explanation from the next episodes, or guesswork, or huge leaps of logic. All the pieces should already be there

I think it does make sense - there are just too many people upset it didn't go the way they wanted it to.

There have been some pretty decent twists in the GOT journey

Ned gone, Rob gone at the red wedding along with his mum, Little finger gone, Ygrette gone, Jon dead then alive, The red woman getting stannis to burn his daughter alive, Stannis in general, the Knights of the Vale saving Jon at the last minute, Theon getting his dick cut off, Sansa raped, The dragons, the Khalisi raped on her wedding night etc etc

You could but won't, keep whining. Hound to Gentry, whiner.

I await your novel.

This isn't a novel, it's a TV show. The writer of the novels actually knows how to construct coherent twists and turns, pity he might never actually finish it, especially after this dogshit trainwreck.

And after 8 years I'm obviously gonna finish it, there's only about 3.5 hrs hours left.
But instead of excitement I now have morbid curiosity to see what else they can cock up.

Meanwhile, back to waiting for book 6.

For sure. I think each of those made a lot more sense thematically to me though. All some sort of irony, justice or character-making events that fit the story.

I dunno man I'm just still sitting here wondering what the significance of Jaime riding north was. I hope his story isn't f**ked.

The set up of the scenes were great at the end
I have no problem with the director there, just that it was too dark at the beginning
This.

The more I think about the episode, the more I like it. But it was the act of watching it, or attempting to watch the first hour, that was a struggle.

I think it was more his defiance of his sister/breaking the bond he had with her

If you like it was the completion of his redemption story

Well, as much as a bloke who knocks up his sister multiple times and cripple young children can

For the flogs that will whinge about any deviation from the books, apparently the producers were really keen on the ice spiders being in the previous episode but just couldn't quite get them to look anything but ridiculous during the pre-production phase and eventually scrapped the idea.

Would have been cool to see the white walkers riding giant spiders
