If you think Oberyn was shaping up to be Tywin's big opposition in the war then you don't understand him at all. He's just a bitter guy who wanted to kill someone. He's not the leader of "the Good Guys"
Well he did die, so I guess that's one of the prerequisites to be leader of the good guys in GoT. :sarcasm:
But going by the book readers reaction in this thread, the TV Oberyn was portrayed a little differently to the book Oberyn. During the fight he didn't just want a confession from the Mountain, but he wanted him to admit that Tywin gave the order to kill his sister, nephew and niece. Was that something the TV producers added or what that also in the book?
How the last episode should've ended

It's been a long while since I read the third book, but I believe he was looking for a confession from the Mountain because:
a). It was only believed The Mountain had raped and killed her.
b). He couldn't very well go after Tywin without some kind of proof.
Whether he'd have tried to kill Tywin himself or simply used the confession to convince his older brother to go to war with the Lannisters is up for debate.
My impression from the book was he wanted to implicate Tywin as well as kill The Mountain. I also thought he was a good character in the book. I was pretty disappointed when he died, although that could also be magnified by worry for Tyrion. I still shake my head that I wanted Tyrion thrown through the moon door in season 1. (I hadn't read the books at that point)
It's been a while since i read the books. But I recall that it was Clegane and Ser Amory Lorch who killed Ellaria and her kids. Something suggested that they had orders, but couldn't really be controlled. The implication is that they went too far and tainted the relationship with Dorne. Whether Clegane was telling the truth or just an angry merkin at the end is open.
Recall that Doran Martell, considered slow and weak by many, is merely patiently waiting and putting things in place to take the kingdom and probably end the Lannisters. Oberyn was too hasty and stupid to see that it was pointless to pursue Clegane and even more pointless to show his hand.
