General Warriors/NRL Stuff (during Covid-19 break)

We probably need this thread, as our usual Warriors talk is stuffed for now (i.e. no 'game-day', 'team line-up', '3-2-1' threads).

I presume the team is leaving Qld, heading to NZ, self-isolating for two weeks, then heading to their homes.

No training? The cynic in me would suggest some of them wouldn't be too worried about that.

I hate watching old Warriors videos, you know, when we were good. However, with this enforced footy lay-off, that's going to be a thing now.

It's incredible to think how close we were to winning a premiership. GF 2011, the 67th minute, we're on a roll, in the Manly twenty, a grubber kick, scooped up in a panic by Cherry-Evans (or Stewart?), and that was that.

Don't go there, guys. It's 2020, and we have Mooks in charge.

I’ve got quite a few old Warriors games on DVD, guy used to do them cheap on trademe years ago, from memory have the first game, a disc of 3 Warriors v Broncos games, 1 with the big scrap in it, and a couple as part of Manly victory box sets from 08 and 11

Sounds good. I was given both full match broadcasts of the Tigers and Storm semis, in 2011, but can't bring myself to watch those again, not now anyway. (Ozbash and R & S sent me those).

What I might do is try to head into the heart of darkness, my lost Warriors years* circa 98-00. In fact, with today and tomorrow off work, and six ice-cold Coronas in the fridge, and the time just about to kick-over to 5pm, I might as well get cracking on Youtube.

*what I mean by 'lost years' is that I don't recall one game or even moment, apart from taking up an invite to drive from Manly to Penrith, in an old, beat-up Ford Charger, to see us play in '99. No memory of the game though, was I on drugs?

Thank heavens I didn't book but next month I was heading over to Auckland to see my first ever Warriors game at Mt Smart, took annual leave from work and everything.

I had the Chooks' game marked down for a Saturday night, and was spending a few days in my old hometown, where I haven't been since Nov' 97.

What a drag COVID-19 is.

Even I remember watching that Tigers game and remember parts of it clearly

Thinking about it earlier I’d probably have 60+ footy games on DVD out in the garage, Origins, Test matches, Grand Finals and General club games, might be spending a bit of time out there the next months with the games on throwing some darts

Wonder how financially secure Warriors are to ride this out? Probably relatively well placed with deep pocketed owners. Imagine Autex is at a size and stability to handle, and the nature of their business will ramp back up pretty quickly at the other end of the crisis.

But sounds like a bunch of Sydney clubs will struggle - staff let go/forced unpaid leave, massive pay cuts for players etc.

Might be a few basement bargain player buys after this all unfolds. Top notch coach on the market would be even better.

A bigger threat will be if the NRL decides to downsize the number of teams allowed to compete.
I understand a 12 team competition, with each team playing two full rounds and then finals, is far more economical. Titans and Warriors plus two others cut. Will save a lot on travel costs too.

remember we bring a lot more money in than most other clubs though, without us the NZ tv deal drops significantly. Plus there’s the importance of maintaining a club in NZ to keep the game’s profile in the country high and maintain it as a source of talent that would otherwise go to Union, and keep the international game afloat. Strategically the Warriors are a key asset. If the comp was looking to trim clubs we wouldn’t be first on the block.

And we are still making a loss. Year after year.
And our crowd numbers are falling.
And we are coming 15th or 16th.

I was thinking the other day that I could live with the Warriors being axed. Seriously. It just gets harder and harder to follow this team. I wouldn't be happy if we lost the team, but I'd get over it. I think I'd support the Knights.

I'd be done for league then, I want to support a NZ team. I've been in Oz 5 years now and have no attachments to any Australian team in any sport. :) I would only watch the Kiwis.

I'd be in the same boat. I'd never get back into supporting another NRL side, apart from our boys.

I've hung on so long with the Warriors simply because it makes winter more interesting. It's something to do, something to talk about. I look forward to the weekends, I enjoy the craic on here.

the club makes a loss. The NRL makes a profit from the club’s existence. Our problems are the same as they’ve always been- poor football management and underperformance. Talent and support have never really been an issue.

I'm upset about the Wellington Phoenix, they were bloody brilliant this year and were going to give the finals a real shake. It just shows what a good coach and good recruitment can do.

Don’t they only have the finals series to play? Still a chance that could happen, would only need a couple of weeks.

Coronavirus: Players give money back to Warriors to help club survive and staff keep jobs

The Warriors players taken the incredibly selfless step of dipping into their own pockets to help the club stay afloat and staff keep their jobs.

Stuff can reveal that the leadership group at the club decided on Wednesday that they would donate their own money as CEO Cameron George looks to save as many jobs as possible while the NRL is shut down.

Across the world professional sportsmen and women are preparing to take pay cuts while the coronavirus pandemic has suspended all competitions.

But it's new for players to have been willing to take a pay cut while also giving money to their club to help it survive.

Warriors halfback Blake Green said the club's senior players wanted to show the front office staff that they're in this crisis together.
Warriors CEO Cameron George speaking to media about what the new Covid-19 updates mean for the NRL team.
"It's tough times for everyone in society, not just the NRL and we've got so many fantastic people in our footy club," Green told Stuff.

"Our football staff are like many other NRL clubs, they could potentially be on leave without pay for three months or longer if the game doesn't return this year.

"We thought that as a playing group we could show our support. We've got a players' fund that we put money into every month and that pays for us to go to a team lunch, or a team activity.

"We decided that we'd make a bigger contribution into that pool this month and offer that money to the club.

"There are plenty of staff at the club who have young families and like everyone else, they're going to do it tough.

"The amount of money isn't going to match what's lost, but it's more the message behind it, that we're in this together. When your mates are hurting or need help, you help them out."

Green said he and other players in the leadership group, who are all in isolation, discussed what they could do to support the club.

"We saw at the beginning of the week that a few other clubs had made the decision to put their footy staff on leave without pay.

"I rang Roger (Tuivasa-Sheck), Tohu (Harris) and Adam (Blair) and suggested it.

"At the moment we face a lot of uncertainty as well and there's a big chance that this month is our last pay as well until the game resumes.

"But while we've still got the chance to provide some assistance to our footy club, we need to show our staff that we care and support them."

George said he was overwhelmed by the offer from the players.

"When Blake contacted me yesterday and said the guys wanted to propose this, between Roger, Blake, Tohu and Adam, it just blew me away," George said.

"To have the playing group put the club first in this difficult situation, it's mind blowing.

"What they've been through over the last few weeks with their families, words can't describe.

"I haven't read of any other playing group in any other sport propose this.

"But what I said to Blake is that it's amazing you want to do this, but if the players' salary takes a cut, then we don't expect players to continue to do this.

"While they are being paid in full, I'm happy for them to do what they've proposed for the club and the staff.

"But as soon as they take any cut, which is in the pipeline, the last thing they need to be doing is this, because they'll be in the same position as everyone else."

For the Warriors players to make such a selfless offer says a lot about the culture at the club and how much it has improved under the leadership of Stephen Kearney and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck.

"That has been a work in progress for a couple of years now," George said.

"This is a clear example of our approach of making sure we have good people in the organisation, from players to administration.

"I couldn't be prouder of our playing group, led by Roger and Stephen (Kearney) has been a big part of this as well."

There are around 70 staff at the Warriors and George says he's trying to save as many jobs as possible and also keep the club going.

There's still 5-6 regular season rounds to go. It's a disaster. It's like the Warriors having their 2002 season cut short.

before everyone jumps in with the jokes, I reckon its a good sign about the culture around the club. I daresay a few years ago this type of thing wouldn't have been considered.

Kearney seems a good guy to have around the club, no doubt about that. It's just not as head coach.
