General Warriors/NRL Stuff (during Covid-19 break)

I think our 2021 is in grave danger too. The govt is looking to stamp out the virus completely and to do that, the border is going to need to be closed. No one will be able to play here, and we won't be able to go overseas without self-isolating/being quarantined for two weeks.

Obviously that's negated by a vaccine being produced.

Gold Coast Warriors for 2021?

I'm a bit muddled up as to the Warriors official stance. They pulled out of the entire season days before the Qld border closed, which effectively suspended the entire NRL. We didn't miss a round.

So, just saying, if everything's hunky-dory by June, all borders open again, the NRL plays out the season but we don't?

I’m sure we’ll return with the other sides if practical. But the international travel aspect may prevent that.

I'd imagine that'd be the case, we just annonunced our season was over because we thought the competition would continue on without us.

Our footy lives are in limbo then. To me, watching old classics on the box, is akin to a heroin-addict relying on a few sickly doses of methadone...

I wanna go back to being called 'Auckland'. I know I'm not alone there. The appeal, back then, was for a club side, from Auckland, to enter the premiership. Now we've sort of morphed into a national side.

Or maybe I'm just feeling overly-sentimental.

I loved '95, apart from missing the finals.

I lived in Christchurch for many years. Making the ‘Auckland’ Warriors the ‘NZ’ Warriors did nothing to spark new national enthusiasm for them, nor would reverting dampen any existing national enthusiasm. Grassroots rugby league development and Warriors’ success breeds national support for the Warriors, not token inclusion in the name. It may however cause Aucklanders to not feel any particular ownership of the team.

That's not how I remember it, we had committed to seeing out the season based in Kingscliff, NZ announced they were going into Stage 4 Lockdown and the Queensland announced they were closing the border at almost the same time and then the NRL suspended the season. The team then flew back to NZ and went into lockdown, both Cameron George and Mark Robinson have since then said they will be back in the competition once the season restarted, however dispensation would have to be sought from the Governments while the borders are closed, that is the difficulty at the moment, we have to wait to see how the next month plays out with both the virus and the lockdown etc.

We will be watching footy sooner than we think imo, and I applaud what they are doing to get it back on the park

Warriors have been granted travel exemptions too I read earlier

I may have missed this somewhere but are the games still going to be played in front of empty stadiums or are they considering letting fans into watch somehow??

And squad size will be interesting as any new injuries/ suspensions to players will have a huge bearing on a team being able to put out a competitive 17 each week

I hope you're right, Beave. This whole 'no crowd' thing just worries me sick. Without 'us' at games the thing is purely big business and clinical.

Yeah it will be empty, think Morrison had those plans in place for 6 months or so

There are many options floating around, all involve ‘bubbles’ of some sort, 1 of the better ones sounds like Olympic Park where there are a couple of fields that could be used for games and others there for trainings and there are a few big hotels within a few mins of the grounds that could house the teams

Panthers have offered their big precinct up as well

I’m not a huge fan of the 2 conference idea being floated so hopefully we can get enough time for a 15 game regular season

I prefer to look at it in regards to giving the general population something to look forward too

Are also big opportunities in other markets if they can get it done too
