So Nathan Cleary got a 2 match suspension for his lying through his teeth.
If I was in charge of the judiciary, I would do things a different way which I am sure would deter these muppets from having no regard for rules.
Instead of suspending them for regular season games, you suspend them for Play Off games. Now true, some teams may not make the playoffs, but it would carry over till the following seasons.
Imagine missing out on a play off game. No player wants that. I am sure that would be way more effective than how they currently do things. He gets a couple of weeks extra holiday and then back into it. Weak.

There's a lot of Warriors players who joined us after 2012 that would be free to throw punches and reign merry hell.

Cleary's young, I don't have an issue with it. Presumably he was slugged a fine too. First offence, all that jazz. Punishments are meant to be deterrents and I doubt he'll do it again.

I watched the Spud v Harrigon incident last night and was a little let down. The Chief began with a real hiss and a roar, was sin-binned, then came back on limping, before shuffling off for good in the 24th minute.

Anyway, back to today. The guy who admitted to the 'sofa incident' but failed to also disclose the 'Tik-Tok dance incident', and the flatmate who claimed to 'disappear into the safe confines of his bedroom' when the five ladies turned up, have now both been stood-down for two games each.

It's a comedy act!

smh.com.au/sport/nrl/untruthful-cleary-and-may-hit-with-two-match-nrl-bans-and-fines-20200511-p54rz7.html

The yarn goes that Chief has actually done his rib cartiledge and was going off but said to Johns to kick off to Spud and he will take him with him, and after being knocked out he forgot he was injured and kept playing haha. Cliffy was on fire that game

Thought of you with tonight’s viewing, Sky had a highlights package of the finals of 1991, your favourite year, was great stuff. Dogs v Magpies playoff for 5th place, Raiders v Magpies, Norths v Manly, Canberra v Manly, Norths v Penrith, Norths v Canberra then the Canberra v Penrith GF. Great play from the likes of Moore, Meninga, Lyons, Iro, Alexander etc. Geyer charging onto the ball and hearing Hughes screaming out “Roycie Simmons” is one of my earliest League memories

Poor old Halligan kicking 1/5 in a game to make the GF that Norths lost by 2, they really were a cursed club

Watched the Kiwis v Kangaroos test from Melbourne in 1991 the other day, McCracken diving into the corner would be my earliest memory I think

I still remember watching that game. It was late evening, and interestingly mid week I think? Blackmore doesn’t get enough credit for his performance that night. Pretty much toweled Dale Shearer, and set up McCracken try as well as scoring his own.

Yeah mid week rings a bell, and we got pumped in the next 2 matches by 40

Blackmore was huge. My memory always told me McCracken was the match sealer but it was early in the contest. The Lonergan shuffle made an appearance too. Also stuck out re watching it what a competitor Gary Freeman was

1991 was special, no doubt about. Even though I was 21 at the time those memories are also some of my earliest League memories.

Remember, we didn't have a heck of a lot of League in NZ in days gone by. The entire '70s and '80s were a few Kiwis tests, some snippets of Sydney, the NZ players doing well in England (including Kiwis tours there) and Origin/NSWRL GF on TV from about '89 onwards. Magazines, newspaper articles and the NZ League Annual book rounded out the coverage. We were such poor cousins to you-know-what.

I can gladly add Big Frank Tinitelia to those pre-91 memories also.

I watched the whole Chief v Spud game last night (the night before, when the Chief limped off in the 24th minute, Blocker said ''he's probably done for the night", and I switched off. But no, he wasn't gone for good).

Great game, the later Harragon incident (as you described) had me in stitches. I also noticed when Carroll was acting like a bit of a tool (standing over the poleaxed Chief) it was the quiet, dignified, yet very 'no-nonsense' David 'Cement' Gillespie that pulled him away.

What a spine Manly had for that season in 1995. Ridge didn't play that particular game in Newcastle but, for the year, it would've been him, Lyons, Toovey and Hasler. What happened in the '95 GF? I remember being disappointed the Sea Eagles got beaten by Canterbury.

They were all Wednesday night tests, mid-winter, in the middle of an economic recession. The first one really lifted our spirits, that's for sure. Such dominance, such Kiwi underdog flair. It was Wally's last test, I recall. He was completely outplayed.

We got way ahead of ourselves with our surprising, and stylish, win. I remember telling a mate 'that's' it, the 'Roos just can't compete with us this time. The balance of power in international football has shifted'.

We were crushed 44-0 in the second test at Sydney. Look at the Aussie line-up, it was superb. That test had mitigator for us. Both the in-form McCracken (and Peter Jackson) was sent-off early. We could argue that upset our balance, confidence and the brilliant chutzpah we had in the first test.

We were never winning the decider at Lang Park, and got another forty put on us but weren't too disgraced. McCracken scored another beautiful try (when the game was still to be decided) and Blackmore dived over for a late consolation.

League was going places in NZ from there on in though. It never really looked back in the sense of the profile it deserved.

My new avatar was taken from vision from the third test. The Kiwis' mascot looks shell-shocked! The '91 test series, like the whole year in League, was certainly a cracking ride.

I think that was an eye-gouge and a knee in the same tackle! Watching live I wasn't overly proud. The Kiwis did go a bit dirty in that particular era. Why? Who knows. Perhaps it was to upset the more fancied, professional Australians. It didn't work.

Sedated hooker with Hasler off the bench

Didn’t turn up on the day in that GF, not aided by a try off a forward pass to Price and a try on the 7th tackle. Peter Moore later admitted they rorted the cap to get Rod Silva from Easts.

Should have really three peated in 95-96-97

I vividly remember that game in 1991. It was in Melbourne, right? I was 7 at the time and I'm blown away by how well I recall it. And the fact if we're saying it was a week night, I must've been up incredibly late. What a legend my Dad is.

I also remember the Palmy North game in 1993 really well, when the crowd kept pinching the balls.

That test match was on TV3 hosted by Clint Brown, he was a very good tv host

I was at that game trying to sell Milo out of a tank on my back, that sucked, the guys selling beer and fizzy drinks were emptying theirs pretty quickly. I basically sold about 10 cups all night.

The 'manager' was a prick too and wouldn't let stand and watch the game while no one bought the Milo.

Tony Coll, ex-Kiwis captain, West Coast legend. RIP.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/leagu...nd-west-coast-community-leader-tony-coll-dies

His last test, versus the Kangaroos at Lang Park, in July 1982 was memorable for me. They were just magic those tests under lights, beamed into NZ loungerooms. It was like another world and we loved it.

My old man's from Greymouth too, so would've known the Coll's. The Kiwis led throughout that test, a major upset was minutes away. We suffered heartbreak with a try to John Muggleton at the death. 11-8 Australia.

We were also robbed. Big Graeme West was put in the clear, the line open, but he was pulled back for a 'forward pass'. Yeah, right. The game did fire up our imaginations and interest in league. We wanted more and, in effect, the narrow loss set up the glory at the same venue the following year.

Here's a trivia question. That test was one of the last to be played under an old, but significant, rule. What was this change that come into effect in 1983? One that's still in effect today?

'83 marked the introduction of the 'hand over' to replace the scrum at the end of sets.

Coll & Baxendale were Coast legends.

West was a great player. Well ahead of his time.
Could slip an offload; trouble was his teammates were rarely ready for it.
Tough as teak but a real gentleman off the field and a great family man.
Badly let down by the Kiwi selectors when he was replaced by Fred Ah Kuoi as Kiwi captain without prior warning.

Coll wasn't a big man but he had a big heart and gave it everything.

Haha gutted. I remember Milo coming along to our Xmas cricket tournament and giving away tonnes of the stuff, so maybe people were too used to getting it for free.
