Just a word of warning don’t get involved in office politics…
Ruby, what the General means by that, is even though you want to befriend everyone and be popular, be a listener and not a talker about other people.
Plenty of workplaces I’ve been at, the so-called unpolished or unpopular one, is often holding all the cards in secret.
Don’t join the “work is misery” group as management almost always has the spies and snitches.
Keep a book at home of all of your achievements and experience at the workplace in the event that you leave. Then you can refer to it later if you need to, because you will forget.
No matter how bad things get, unless it’s critical, always get another job before you leave.
Find out the hobbies and interests of the bosses on the sly and work it into the convo socially if you can. Don’t be obvious or they will smell a rat.
Remember, people usually love belting on about themselves. Give them that opportunity ( however painful) and they will view you more favourably.
Don’t sing your own praises. People who do that at our work are treated with suspicion and contempt ( even by some of the senior management). Be humble with success.
As for the pay rise, that’s a bit early for the moment, first things first, then we can throw it open to the panel here to discuss it.
My guess is that’s it’s survival pay now, but it’s early days. Some places are much much better to work for a little less cash, if the conditions are good. Swings and roundabouts.
This job is not a trial run. Go hard.
