More goth rock than metal...but Dan Swano is an absolute metal/rock legend. His metal band Edge of Sanity was an amazing band and his solo stuff is absolutely amazing.

This comes from The Breathing Shadow, which was the first album of what was originally a solo project - Nightingale. This album was recorded and mastered within a week at his home.

Dan Swano = legend.

Now, this music is what I call SOUL

The dreamscapes are brilliant and there is no clutter and even better he hasn't "sold out", he used his REAL voice, as is, worked his FEEL / RHYTHM / MELODIES around his voice. 10/10.

Sorry mate, I lasted about 30 seconds (yeah, I know, it goes for 8 minutes). The intro just sounded pretty dated, like 80s metal. How old is it?

Meanwhile, I've snapped up a ticket to see these guys in March.

Now, these guys are LEGENDS.

Stagger will back me up on that.....

Doesn't overly float my boat...certainly doesn't seem to be anything earth shatteringly new in it.

On the other hand it's more interesting than heaps of the metal stuff I've been subjected to.

Now if I'm gonna listen to something on the heavy side it'll be like this.
Nothing philosophically earth shattering but heaps of fun and Robert Trujillo was a monster long before he sold his soul to Lars.

Apologies Fish Eel, each to their own but this music (listened to 5 tracks on Youtube) I found very boring.

"No Doubt" with Gwen Steffani & co are miles in front of Pavement as were the early English bands like............

Madness:
Our House: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4p4RWBCEFRo
Driving In My Car: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYZNSyP9v9M

No Doubt:
Hella Good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiCMFd2XXT0
Just A Girl: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEuuXxDp-gA
Hey Baby: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=896Aby1hUH8
Its My Life: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_rOln5rhE4
Underneath It All: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_8WWWiHZNc

This is what I call music (SOUL) in the vain that Pavement is trying to create but fall very very short of the mark.

It's music for the mind and heart, Cassie.

About 15 years, I think.

Doesn't overly float my boat...certainly doesn't seem to be anything earth shatteringly new in it.

Not supposed to be. Music doesn't always have to be new and innovative to be good.

On the other hand it's more interesting than heaps of the metal stuff I've been subjected to.

Subjected is the right word. Most of what you've heard is probably arse droppings.

Here's another old school death classic:

Cemetary - Where Rivers of Madness Stream.

From their 1992 album An Evil Shade of Grey (my favourite album of all time). Sorry Cassie, it has death vocals.

I agree, I guess what I was clumsily alluding too was that it sounded like much other metal that I've heard.

Almost certainly...metal isn't something I generally go looking for.

I actually didn't mind this so much...love the phaser on the bass
Dunno if you posted this earlier HJ but I quite liked Sweet Tragedy by Cemetary... I'm a little more partial when there is good seperation between guitar, bass and drums and each are doing something interesting and not just banging away....That's definitely something I like about the early Rollins Band stuff...play with a rock solid groove and space and it sounds much stronger to me.

TBH, I just find death metal to be a comical cliche.

Lets look all tough.

Lets offend people with artwork and lyrics.

Blah blah. Boring.

Fair enough, but it isn't limited to death metal:

Ozzy Osbourne ate animals' heads
Robert Smith dressed in a goth sort of way
Britney Spears ffs offended people with here "If you seek Amy" lyrics

That attitude is because of this:

Heavy metal isn't all about social commentary. It's not all dark either.

Poser generic heavy metal largely is - fits right in with the scene metal teenybopper demographic who all think they're enlightened, thus allowing them to rage against the government or religion.

"Oooh, look at me, I'm so offensive and anti-establishment!" is absolute wankdickery.

A lot of great heavy metal is about dreamscapes, alternate reality, spiritual development, macabre storytelling and a kind if "fantasy-fiction" like subject. The best artwork is beautiful and not offensive or disgusting.

Metal often takes you on a journey and is not offensive or angry, aggressive or tough. Black, Doom and Death all have aspects of this.

I'm not surprised that people on here who think they're metalheads actually have this false opinion, though. After all, I keep reading about how awesome Opeth are.

You are right - it isn't all about social commentary and it's not all dark.

For the record, one of my favourite bands is The Sword (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFWoDlygXKM). They're neither dark nor making statements about society or anything. They're just playing good, old-fashioned metal and telling a story. I know, I know. I'm a stupid kid and I should STFU because I know nothing (although I would have assumed I wasn't that much younger than you, HJ, seeing as I am 24).

TBH I don't see myself as a 'metal-head' because I like music that isn't really metal. But I do like to dabble in metal itself.

And with my point earlier I was simply trying to explain why certain bands may choose to be so raw in their sound. Perhaps I was wrong, but it was simply my interpretation.

Lastly, I realise you despise Opeth and that's fair enough. I, for one, will stop talking about them.

Nothing wrong with that. As you said they're good ol' fashioned metal.

(although I would have assumed I wasn't that much younger than you, HJ, seeing as I am 24).

I'll be hitting 33 before I know it, young fella. I was listening to metal whilst you were still playing patty-cake in kindergarten. :p

So do I. I've been listening to the likes of Stadium Arcadium by RHCP a lot recently, for example. I'm also a massive Michael Jackson fan. Have been whipping out a bit of Boyz II Men recently, too (Motownphilly is a classic song).

Oh, 33 is still young!

I am also a big Michael Jackson fan. And thanks to my dad, I love some good old fashioned blues.

I like pretty much anything that isn't manufactured modern day pop, really. Although I guess a lot of modern music, pop or not, is heavily manufactured these days.

On a side note, I remember seeing Mike Oldfield live in Barcelona a few years ago and he was awesome.

Mate I was listening to Black Sabbath while you were still part of the background void that filled the nightly space with sparkling lights.

Maybe you were one of those beautiful Tommy Iommi riffs that bounced back from a celestial body and crystallized on earth into a vibe.

A Virgin Birth????
