2010, the sequel to 2001, not quite up there with 2001 but is still a good movie in it's own right IMO.

It's based on Arthur C Clarke's book so it wasn't just studio producers saying they wanted a sequel.

So was Saturn 3 with Kirk Douglas and sexy Farrah Fawcett.

Surely the original 3 star wars are the best ever 'pure' sci-fi?

Hopefully one day someone will make the Hyperion Cantos movies.

Some good suggestions in here.

Oblivion and Elysium are decent recent ones, the latter more in concept than execution.

Can't recommend Moon or Sunshine (the first two thirds) highly enough. Sucker for Event Horizon, District 9, Minority Report, and Dark City too.

The original Alien is still one of my all time favourite sci-fi movies, and The Thing isn't far behind.

I enjoyed Prometheus, but as its own movie rather than an Alien prequel.

Watched Moon last night and was very impressed - a good thinking person's sci fi movie. 8/10

Followed up with Dark Star. I wasn't sure if it was a comedy or not with lines like "Control....we have had an explosion in the store and lost the entire expedition's supply of toilet paper" and the pet alien that looked like a beach ball with feet. 5/10

Tried Solaris but being Russian without subtitles made it no-show. Grrrrr.

Time Bandits is pretty good if you don't mind a bit of Pythonesque absurdist humour mixed with your sci-fi/fantasy.

Out of the sci-fi releases over the past few years, I found Prometheus the most thought provoking.

I believe that Ridley Scott had a hand in this and the Alien quadrology. Is that correct and that Prometheus is a prequel?

I really haven't found the connection.....yet.

Scott made the original Alien, James Cameron and David Fincher made the sequels.

Prometheus was in development hell for years and went through a number of re-writes which is why it turned into such a mess. It really should've been a stand-alone movie with no ties to the Alien series.

Tried Solaris but being Russian without subtitles made it no-show. Grrrrr.

Solaris was remade a decade ago by Hollywood. Hasn't got as many dead scenes as the Russian original.

The original Dune film does not get much love, particularly from hardcore fans of the novels such as myself.

I think David Lynch created a vision that compliments the Frank Herbert world nicely. He certainly did better than would have most directors.

It definitely pays to have read the novel first, but I still think it ranks highly as a good sci-fi film.

Just finished viewing Sunshine.

Started off as a great movie then went suddenly pear shaped at the 1 hr 14 min mark. What the f**k happened?? Anyway a nice view of the Sydney Opera House in the last scene.

Reminds me of another movie that started off with great ideas then fell flat on its face - Altered States with Kurt Russell, I think.
