Good Intelligent Sci Fi Movies

Out of the sci-fi releases over the past few years, I found Prometheus the most thought provoking.

I believe that Ridley Scott had a hand in this and the Alien quadrology. Is that correct and that Prometheus is a prequel?

I really haven't found the connection.....yet.

It's a very loose prequel and they intended it that way. It's the genesis of the Alien race rather than a movie about them. It's more of a backstory for the weird alien ship that they find the original Alien(s) on than about the aliens themselves.

Just finished viewing Sunshine.

Started off as a great movie then went suddenly pear shaped at the 1 hr 14 min mark. What the f**k happened?? Anyway a nice view of the Sydney Opera House in the last scene.

Reminds me of another movie that started off with great ideas then fell flat on its face - Altered States with Kurt Russell, I think.

It's a lot like Full Metal Jacket in that regard. So awesome and then so inexplicably shit.

Has anybody seen "Europa Report"?

Apparently it's about an expedition to one of Jupiter's moons looking for lifeforms but things don't go to plan (isn't that all the time?). Released earlier this year.

William Hurt.

Another weird one from that era - Videodrome

I loved prometheus, gets a lot of stick and I don't know why. Or I do know why but feel it's nitpicking and the atmosphere, vibe and "thought provoking- ness" of it hasn't been paralleled lately, if ever.

I don't get the love for star wars, hate it, all of it. It's more space fantasy than science fiction, I mean if you want to talk about logical flaws and stuff like that star wars is a nightmare.

I don't know if it really counts, but I just watched "Dredd" and thought it was pretty cool, even though I liked judge dredd comics as a kid I was avoiding it I think due to how shitty the 90s movie was, but this one is way more true to the comics and has some pretty cool stuff. Not really thought provoking sci fi though. Although I think the judge dredd universe is one of the most realistic plausible sci fi universes, like most closely resembles how the future could pan out.

Rise of the planet of the apes was cool IMO, better than the really old ones for me, and certainly way better than the mark wahlberg one, looking forward to dawn of the planet of the apes.

Star Wars isn't science fiction any more than The Hobbit is.

The very definition of the genre excludes Star Wars, as it is not exploring the consequences of science.

Yeah, wouldn't watch it again.

Soldier with Kurt Russell was really cool.

About genetically trained military cleaning out a planet in the future.

Anyone watching Revolution on Go at the moment?

I'm enjoying it and it has a pretty unique twist on the post apocalyptic genre.

I like the concept, but f**k it's an ordinary show. That female lead is a f**king idiot who just does something stupid every week that they have to get her out of.

Just about the only things likable about the show are its villains and the concept. The heroes are all shit and the storylines aren't a whole lot more interesting.

Sounds like the type that wears high heels while being chased through a forest only to trip over a tree root.

Not a movie but no one's mentioned Dr Who.

Grew up with Tom Baker and the old doctors.

Now I have to ask my ten year old what the hell is going on because I'll be stuffed if I can understand it.

Watch The Thing prequel, then watch the original The Thing afterwards. While it isn't as good as the 1982 movie, the prequel definitely isn't bad, and is surprisingly faithful to the original- the writers and directors did their homework there.

I agree, I enjoyed the prequel a lot which at least attempted to stick with the same tone and spirit of the original.

Best sci-fi movies I'd recommend (apart from the obvious Matrix/Alien/Terminator etc.):
Planet of the Apes (1964)
Cloud Atlas
Sunshine
Moon
Contact
Serenity

Underrated / hon mention:
Event Horizon
Solider
13th Floor
Dark City
