Good Intelligent Sci Fi Movies

I've just watched Europa Report and have no idea why people shit on it. This versus that wankfest Bullock/Clooney failure called Gravity is a no contest.

Europa Report was a scientific sci-fi movie. Sorry if it didn't have car chases, gunfights, compulsory sex scenes and big titted blonde bimbos with 25 tentacles.

I felt it was like a sci-fi documentary without the usual Hollywood cute and cuddly save the mankind cheesy ending.

9/10. Sorry Mr Spock.....it must have gone against your religious beliefs.

I think you might be one of the only people on earth who didn't love Gravity. It's a near lock for Best Picture and has almost universally positive reviews.

What about it bothered you so much?

I like the concept, but f**k it's an ordinary show. That female lead is a f**king idiot who just does something stupid every week that they have to get her out of.

Just about the only things likable about the show are its villains and the concept. The heroes are all shit and the storylines aren't a whole lot more interesting.

They sacked the entire team of writers before the second season, changed the location and gave her a smaller role.

It's a lot better.

I watched it yesterday. These are my thoughts on it as I posted in the "What Movie Have You Seen #2" thread.

Even though it was short, Gravity was the longest 85 minutes of my life - I couldn't wait for it to finish. It should have been named "Murphy's Law - 101 Things That Go Wrong With Spacecraft".

2/10

It was just too slow moving for my likes while at the same time it didn't build any suspense. And I'm not a fan of the aptly named Sandra Bullock.

Ah, interesting. Guess I wasn't the only one who found it formulaic and meh. I'll give it another go.

I checked out Europa Report based entirely on your word, and loved it as well.
So cheers for that recommendation!

Gravity is also good but for different reasons, it was stronger on visuals but weaker on plot.

This thread inspired me to watch Moon (2009) which I'd been meaning to watch for ages, also the man from earth.

Moon is crazy good, should have won awards and been way bigger than it was, just flawless as far as I'm concerned. Like what 2001 a space odyssey should have been like, instead of the painfully drawn out self indulgent overrated snoozefest it was.

The man from earth had that b grade daytime tv movie feel, but was still a cool idea and executed fairly well considering the obviously extremely limited budget.

Moon is criminally underrated. It's a lot like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in that regard. Should have been a huge critical, if not commercial, success.

Does anyone have some good sci fi movies to recommend? They don't have to be recent releases. I rewatched "The Andromeda Strain" (1971) the other day and found it very enjoyable.

I don't need movies that fit the following criteria.....

Fantasy Genre e.g. The Hobbit, The Lord Of The Rings, etc.

Star Wars, Star Trek, Superman type movies.

Movies that rely on a display of CGI talents.

I especially enjoy apocalypic movies and those with a degree of scientific plausibility and that are thought provoking.

Any recommendations?

Apologies if I missed it, but I'm fairly certain no one has mentioned pretty much exactly the film you're hunting for --- & that is K-Pax. This is a critics darling yet not massive financially kinda movie (in my experience, always a winning formula there) starring Kevin Spacey & Jeff Bridges. It is a stunningly compelling, thinking mans piece of sci-fi.

Two others which may've been mentioned & also make great choices are Dark City (brilliant film, also the last time Jennifer Connelly was smokin' hot IMO) & Solaris (2002 re-make).

Happy viewing!

PS --- Nice to see a fellow Andromeda fan. You ever read the book? Absolute belter.

Not a movie but Futurama is a very good sci-fi show (especially the 1st 4 seasons).

Enemy mine

I, robot

Tron and Tron Legacy

Please don't waste the OPs time so obviously. He asked for intelligent, thinking sci-fi movies.

1. Futurama is not a movie.

2. It is not intelligent or thought-provoking & its writers would never claim it to be.

3. It's a God damn comedy series.

You love it, great (I happen to think its one of the weakest animated comedy shows ever made, but that's beside the point), but in no way, shape or form does your suggestion do anything but potentially waste the OPs time. This suggestion makes the guy who offered Starship Troopers look relevant.

Haven't seen Tron but holy f&$! was i, Robot garbage. That part where he holds up the sneakers to the screen & gives you the brand name? One of the all-time most abhorrently blatant product placements ever. Just awful.
