Good Intelligent Sci Fi Movies

Please don't waste the OPs time so obviously. He asked for intelligent, thinking sci-fi movies.

1. Futurama is not a movie.

2. It is not intelligent or thought-provoking & its writers would never claim it to be.

3. It's a God damn comedy series.

You love it, great (I happen to think its one of the weakest animated comedy shows ever made, but that's beside the point), but in no way, shape or form does your suggestion do anything but potentially waste the OPs time. This suggestion makes the guy who offered Starship Troopers look relevant.
Starship Troopers is pretty sharp, intelligent and poignant when viewed as the satire that it was obviously intended to be. It's a valid suggestion.

I have to strongly disagree. While I know what you're referencing, & thus where you're coming from, it seems unavoidable to me that those qualities are over-ridden by the action, CGI, & occasional comedic tangibles. I can't see it as a thinking mans sci-fi, but I guess it's up to Veggie Patch to make that call in the end.

Umm, bite me.

Just because you don't enjoy it doesn't mean nobody else can.

The best way to find things that you may enjoy is to experience them. You'll never know if you don't give it a try.

There's been some suggestions made here that I don't agree with but I'm not gonna be an arse and point out that I didn't enjoy them and the person who suggested it is wasting people's time.

He's not asking for something he can enjoy without giving any parameters. He's asking for something he can enjoy with specific criteria in mind. Futurama is about as faithful to those guidelines as me offering him a cheeseburger in response to his thread.

Can you honesly not see how inappropriate this topic is for you to spread the good word for a show you (somehow manage to) enjoy? It's just a simple manner of respect. If a guy stopped you for directions, would you point him down the wrong road because you like the scenery on that route? No. This is no different. You are just wasting his time rudely.

... but the action, CGI and "occasional comedic tangibles" (are you sure tangibles is the word you were looking for?) are all a part of what makes the movie so good. The movie makes all sorts of clever statements and observations about the human condition and about fascist/controlled/brainwashed populations and societies. I wouldn't go as far to say it's a masterpiece, however it is a very good, classic and cult sci-fi that has some strong messages on very real topics, and about ourselves, too. That's pretty much the watermark for good sci-fi.

Definitely don't watch the sequels, though. No redeeming qualities there whatsoever. It appears that the people that made the sequels also missed the point of the first one.

Have you read the book?
No, but I don't see why the movie can't be judged on it's own merit. I know it's not a faithful adaption of the book.

The argument that a movie is bad because it isn't like the book is totally flawed. If the movie trod on your dreams because it didn't measure up to the book, that's fine, but it doesn't make it bad in and of itself. Furthermore it likely biases your opinion more than mine if you have read it.

I've actually heard that the book was an endorsement of that kind of society, and that the movie in fact lampoons the book... but I can't confirm that.

Apologies if I missed it, but I'm fairly certain no one has mentioned pretty much exactly the film you're hunting for --- & that is K-Pax. This is a critics darling yet not massive financially kinda movie (in my experience, always a winning formula there) starring Kevin Spacey & Jeff Bridges. It is a stunningly compelling, thinking mans piece of sci-fi.

Two others which may've been mentioned & also make great choices are Dark City (brilliant film, also the last time Jennifer Connelly was smokin' hot IMO) & Solaris (2002 re-make).

Happy viewing!

PS --- Nice to see a fellow Andromeda fan. You ever read the book? Absolute belter.

Why are you mentioning The Andromeda Strian book?

You're just wasting everyone's time and being rude.

The perils of written communication. I just meant that as a casual question

Yeah, this is about the scale of intellect I would expect from someone who finds humour in bottom-rung sh!t like Futurama.

who died and made amadaca the king of all sci fi?!

I'm just saying when a guy asks for an intelligent, thinking sci-fi movie, pointing him in the direction of a low-brow animated comedy TV series (which is not a movie, not science-fiction, & not by any stretch of the imagination thought-provoking) it's pretty damn rude. You can only be wasting the OPs time with such a wildly inaccurate call.

I admitted right from the top it wasn't a movie (although there were 4 direct to DVD feature length movies produced).
Just because it's not you're taste don't go poo-pooing someone else's opinion.
It causes no harm to make suggestions.
We all have things we may or may not like that others have a complete opposite view on. Neither are right or wrong.
Move on son.

Stop saying, "just because it isn't your taste," like that has anything at all to do with it.

It's not sci-fi.

It's not a movie.

It's not thought-provoking.

It might as well be a God damned telephone, for all the value it has to the OPs enquiry. Jesus. I could explain this to a f**king Pigeon.

Please explain to me how Futurama...

A) Is thought-provoking & intelligent.

B) Explores the consequences of scientific innovations.

D!ckhead.

"It's science fiction because it's set in the future & has aliens in it," LMAO
