The billion is banked. It's the next $300 million that is proving a challenge. Regardless of expansion.
Yeah, expansion doesn't do much for the Broadcasters unless its in new markets or places with high demand for local content. The extra game isn't that valuable as its hard to fit the extra timeslot in, and it dilutes tallent.

But just looking at the Warriors and Storm and ratings in Melbourne/NZ its easy to see the value in putting teams into new markets.

Exactly, add another 100k a week on to the figures from Perth plus the option of a new live game TV slot every other weeks from Perth and the value of another game from advertising/Foxsports point of view and expansion is a must. Should be no later than 2014 to get max value out of the contracts.

The only thing you can glean from afl and nrl ratings is that they are both very popular and miles ahead of the other football codes. Neither code really gains anything from a dick measuring contest every second week to see who is more popular.

AFL :x

Not unhappy with 87K for Perth, thought we might have topped the 100k but was a nice day and opening weekend of the show. Maybe if Ch9 actually promoted they were showing it then it would have. I watched it at the pub with around 150 other RL fans there, would imagine there was probably a hundred pubs around Perth the same.

Having said that the sample is so unreliable that you have to take any figures relating to TV audiences with a very big pinch of salt.

http://research-advisors.com/tools/SampleSize.htm

From what I can gather the sample size they use is propably good for a population of up to 300,000,000 so I'm not going to argue it.

Over 3.3 million tune into the 2011 Grand Final

NRL Mon, Oct 03, 2011 - 3:31 PM

More than 3.3million Australian based viewers and a further 692,000 New Zealand based fans joined the 81,988 crowd at ANZ Stadium to watch Manly’s 24-10 win over the Warriors in the 2011 Telstra Premiership Grand Final.

Across the Nine, WIN and NBN networks last evening, the Telstra Premiership Grand Final averaged 2.16million viewers in Australia’s five capital cities (2010: 2.161m) and a further 1.15m (2010: 1.151m) across regional Australia.

Sydney led the way with 1,083,000 viewers (a 75% audience share) and Brisbane 567,000 (71% audience share).

Melbourne recorded a significant lift on 2010 winning its timeslot with 362,000 viewers tuning in to see if the Warriors could go all the way after having defeated the Storm the previous week.

In New Zealand 515,000 viewers watched on subscription television live through Sky Television and a further 177,000 watched delayed free to air coverage on Prime.

“The build up to the match across both Australia and New Zealand had been incredible,” NRL Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, said today.

“The atmosphere in the crowd is something I don’t think people will forget and it certainly carried through the television broadcasts.

“It continues a really strong year of television ratings and a finals series that saw significant growth on last year’s figures.

“Again the results underline the strength of Rugby League’s connection with television audiences.”

great ratings for nsw cup in sydney.

It smashed the afl gf sydney ratings from the day before and was in a far worse timeslot.

league officials need to get their arse into gear and package the nsw cup into a comp that will demand regular live tv coverage and gain decent sponsorship.

People will watch, especially with teams such as the bears, jets, steelers ect involved.

Figures dont show how manly people watched the game in pubs and clubs.

Ive always been scepticle of rating figures because of the stupid way they the ratings are attained.

Why don't they have an on-line site were you can fill in what and when you watched?

because that's subject to some sort of bias

Good idea. Could be similar to college basketball & football in the USA.

Thing I don't get is that there are an alleged 2,000 people in the Tv rating sample group. In WA that is probably around 200 meaning that every person with a TV box represents approx 10,000 people. They sometimes give the viewing figures for NRL as 8,000, does that mean only part of a person was watching? To get 87K only required 8.7 of those sample group (again how do you get .7?) to be watching. I find it hard that in a population of 2mill (Perth) 200 people would give you an accurate enough sample without bias to give a true indication. That is before you throw in pub and club viewing and mates sat around the telly.

Going from that sample group chart WA shoud have nearer 10,000 sample size for an accurate result, not 200!

That is average audience not peak or a total so that could be the reason for the weird number (if there are in fact only 200).

LOL, Ch9 WWOS Facebook page response to me posting this:

‎87,000 watched the NRL Grandfinal in Perth yesterday, come on Ch9 tell us again how there is no audience for RL in this city!

We think its a terrific result and we don't say that there is no audience but given the Grand Final attracted over 2 million viewers Australia-wide (roughly 3 times larger than a regular Friday night game) the Perth figures are at least 3x inflated. Expanding our broadcast in coming years to WA is a key goal and the 87,000 who tuned in for this year's final is no doubt going to help in realising that goal.

piss weak, but they do have a point, once it's shown regularly in its own time slot week to week it will improve,

Not really, for the brief time two years ago we got a Sunday game at 2pm it rated 40K+. This was with no advertising or history to build a regular audience. They replaced the game after a few weeks with McGyver and WWE wrestling which both rated sub 20k every week.

SOO this year went:
Game1 11.30pm 15k
Game2 9.30pm 30k
Game 3 8.30pm 87K

Again showing that a regular 70k plus audience could be expected from Perth, far more than current Friday 9.30pm or Sunday afternoon showings get

Also if you take out the 500K viewers from Vic, WA and SA from the GF figure (as they don't get Friday night games) the GF number is actually only double the normal Friday night audience not triple.

I know what they're doing, you don't need to tell me because I've been around LU for years, they're merkins plan and simple.

Once they get a side and some decent time slots it will improve, hopefully another TV station..

Perth needs to be included into the comp sooner rather than later.

I just can't understand all this 2015 bullshit about the exsisting clubs needing to benefit from the new tv money for a couple of years.

Have an 18 team comp and there will be plenty to benefit from.

2 new teams will bring in more TV $ than it will take to set them up and support them.
