What I would love to see is a mentoring programme setup by the club. Not 1 on 1 personal training.. but moreso get the old heads in there at regular intervals to lend a hand at sessions.. not Coaching/Tactics... more of a support role to the coaching staff.. ie: helping with the drills whether it be as simple as holding bump pads during line drills or spotting for them in the gym.. being involved with the Toyota Cup Team.. Juniors... give them the perspective of the poeple who have achieved the ulimate at their level and to be there to build some comradery between not only the current crop but also to get them in touch with the old heads who have been there and done it and learn to be proud of the club.

Thanks Mark

Results speak for themselves. That is some record. If he doesn't get the job I will be very surprised.

PS Assuming he does, what are the chances of Lyon returning ? He was a big fan of his at St Helens. :)
sugar daddy would have to come back too

I dunno about the head coach job, but the boys could sure do with some mentors, so maybe we could employ them in that capacity.

We do need to show some spirit & pride in our club, and bringing the old boys back would be perfect IMO.

The problem with having these guys come on as 'mentors' per say, is that people like Brett Kenny and Ray Price, to some of our young players, are just names from a past era. They played their football when half our kids were in nappies.

IMO Fitzy is right about former players bagging the club. Bert has been a go-to man for the Telecrap lately as much as Pricey was in the past.

Wishful thinking by Kenny who is looking at ways of making a crust without having to sell photocopiers 9-5.

I bet if u asked the boys who they were, they would definitely have a ton of respect for them.

I was in nappies when they were winning premierships, and they mean a sh*t load to me, imagine how much a player would look up to them.

And Brett Kenny's not THAT ancient.

but the diff between u and players is you are a lifetime parra fan - players are employees of a footy team

A good number weren't even thought of when Price had finished.

I see some usefulness in bringing a few players in, having a chat about the good old days and maybe even throwing some advice the way of the players. Senior and Peter Wynn involved in a bit of coaching wouldn't hurt - particularly Senior as I believe a few players would have already been used to having him around the place anyway.

In terms of Kenny, I would have some misgivings in having him involved with the players given the criticism he has dished out to past and present players.

Involvement in some way other than handing out jerseys may well be a good start.

Fitzgerald appeared on the Big Sports Breakfast this morning doing his usual 5 minute blab and TK asked him about the article.

I am paraphrasing a little here, but Fitzy said that Kenny and Grothe were no chance to coach at Parra. When asked if perhaps former club greats returning to the club could return some of the 'soul' to Parramatta, he said that there was nothing wrong at the club and that often past players did more harm than good, by bagging the club publicly.

To prove that Parra had involved ex-players Fitzy then named John Peard, Ron Hilditch and Mick Cronin as players who came back to coach the club. A good reason perhaps, not to employ ex-Eels as coaches, but definitely no excuse not to involve them in other areas, IMO.

We may not have set the world on fire with Cronin and Hilditch as coach but i was at least proud of the effort that the players put in on the field with the lack of cattle (except for Hilditch's last year on both accounts) which is more than can be said about this year

Sorry but EGS or Kenny for that matter. We need professionals, maybe call them once in a while to try and rev the boys up before a match, but really i doubt they could offer much apart from a few pissed yarns, sorry just my opinion.

Yeah maybe we could have a guest ex-player who comes in for a week and works with the players. Like they do with has-been recording artists in Australian Idol. :sarcasm:

I don't get it, how come in the other thread I mentioned to have Kenny and Price as assistance coaches and I get blasted that it was a crap idea and now alot of people are in favour of it?

I don't think EGS would be that useful and if I had a choice between the 3, I would definitely go Pricey.

I can imagine if they dropped the ball during training, it would be 100 laps around the oval for everyone. Didn't he win his fight over Cancer as well? I tough nut

Involvement in some way other than handing out jerseys may well be a good start.

I remember being told a few years ago, that some past players do hand out special jerseys at home games, stuff like 50, 100, 150 . . . games or debut jerseys.

I don't know if it still happens now. I remember watching ParraTV at the start of the year after the first up win against the Dogs and Coach Hagan addressed the players and through over to Bubbles to make a comment, Which the players responded too with cheers.

Personally I think there are a lot of past players that are always in and around our club, some mostly on game day but some also involved with the club at different levels. It is only really 3 or 4 that aren't and make a big song and dance about it.

Also interesting, I wasn't at Presentation night, but I have watched the Video's. How many of our Legends, could not pronounce the players names, I think Bob the Bear and EGS were the main offenders but there might have been more.

Respect is a two way street.

these guys dont want the head coaches role. Everyone knows that. They know they cant do it.
They just want to be involved of some sort....
Our club needs to embrace them, before it is to late. Look at clubs who embrace there past greats, they genuinley are a successful club on and off the field.

Fitzy needs to bury personal things and man up and do whats best for the club, players (past and present) and supporters.

It cant do any harm having these sorts of blokes around the club to try and re install some pride and passion in the jumper, whats the worst that can happen? answer: it doesnt work and we are in the same position we are in now....
