To be brutally honest I don't think Bert and EGS can offer as much as the current assistants based on their previous experiances in coaching in the modern era however this club can vastly improve it's recognition of past greats, especially during home matches, maybe we should take a leaf out of Souths, Canterbury and Manly's book.

I'd love to see both men and other past legends become directly involve on Match day ie: leading the side out, handing out the jerseys, giving the players pep talk just prior to them running on the field and handing out the best and fairest awards from previous matches.

this should be done each and every week and not just for milestones.

How many of our Legends, could not pronounce the players names, I think Bob the Bear and EGS were the main offenders but there might have been more.

Respect is a two way street.

Who has mentioned anything about respect?

As for names, I would reckon half the players would struggle on the pronunciation of the various names in the team.

these guys dont want the head coaches role. Everyone knows that. They know they cant do it.
They just want to be involved of some sort....
Our club needs to embrace them, before it is to late. Look at clubs who embrace there past greats, they genuinley are a successful club on and off the field.

Fitzy needs to bury personal things and man up and do whats best for the club, players (past and present) and supporters.

It cant do any harm having these sorts of blokes around the club to try and re install some pride and passion in the jumper, whats the worst that can happen? answer: it doesnt work and we are in the same position we are in now....

you're right they should be involved, but not as direct coach's..

It has been intimated by a few that the current players would have little idea of, or respect for the Past Players.

As for names, I would reckon half the players would struggle on the pronunciation of the various names in the team.

Thats great but when do half the squad have to get up at a formal function recognizing the players and do it? If you can't take the time to learn or properly pronounce a persons name, Be them a club legend or a current player or someone on the Street, It shows them little respect in my opinion.

Have you listened to or read the bastardisation of players names by the commentators or in the print media? Andrew Voss, the MC of previous presentation nights, spends half the night getting names wrong.

More often than not the club legends only see these players once or maybe twice a year and given the various pronunciations I can understand why the names are pronounced wrong. For all we know we get them wrong as well.

Sorry but that is such an apologists line. We are a professional club, with Professional people. Why they (as a whole, staff and ex players presenting) can not be told who is getting the award they are presenting and then do a little rehearsal during the night if the name is to hard, before the announcement, shows to me these blokes are to some extent just turning up. If Vossy gets it wrong then that is something for he and Ross Smart to work out. If the Commentators are getting it wrong, again something for Rossco to look at.

But If I am asked to speak in front of a number of people at public occasions which I have done before I genuinely like to know what I am doing.

I bet you've been saving that one up MITS.

You are aware of who Bob O'Reilly is aren't you MITS? Heard all the stories? Certainly isn't going to win too many Nobel Prizes. I applaud the bloke for the fact he can get up and talk long enough to give a speech.

Honestly, I don't make that much of it. I have worked with people for 8 years and they still get my name wrong. It happens.

Mark, how many times have you seen commentators, during the process of an interview with the player, ask them directly, how do you pronounce your name?? Tautai was asked by Voss on stage and I've heard three different versions on how to pronounce Uesele..

at the end of the day it's hardly an issue.

Yes, I know the stories. But again these players built the club. As Pete would say, the Dug the well that these players drink from. We all want to see them involved in the club. Yet their actions to me don't seem to show that they want a large involvement.

Yeah but then again some of the stuff we go on with on this board is Hardly an issue. Doesn't stop us going on about it.

Agreed 1000% Stagger. I think at this point in time that is the best way to involve our greats. I don't see any of our former 80's greats as top quality coaches or even assistants. But a role as mentioned above would be perfect for both players and legends.

We may not have set the world on fire with Cronin and Hilditch as coach but i was at least proud of the effort that the players put in on the field with the lack of cattle (except for Hilditch's last year on both accounts) which is more than can be said about this year

That's not entirely true. I clearly remember a few games where player apathy was quite evident, particularly under Ron Hilditch's time as coach.

Watching certain players standing under the goal posts and having a laugh after letting in another try is something I'll never forget. Particularly as I'd flown all the way to Perth to watch them play.

Fitzgerald says 'no' to legends

| October 31, 2008 12:00am

PARRAMATTA CEO Denis Fitzgerald is set to slam the door shut on an offer by former club greats Brett Kenny and Eric Grothe to join the club's coaching team.

The former Test stars, who played 407 club games between them, are adamant they can help return the western Sydney powerhouse to its glory days of the 1980s.

InThe Daily Telegraph today the pair said they would formally apply to join the NRL team's coaching staff, as they were desperate to put "some soul" back into the once-proud club.

However Fitzgerald has ruled that out. Tomorrow The Daily Telegraph will bring you the full story ...
