Hayne fires a shot at Gallop
  • By Josh Massoud
JARRYD Hayne has handed an early Christmas present to league fans - and a grim yuletide warning to the NRL: Stop acting the Scrooge.
With the ink barely dry on his three-year contract extension at Parramatta, Hayne launched into a thoughtful missive on behalf of NRL superstars who he believes are being short-changed by salary-cap restrictions.
Although Hayne will earn up to $2 million over the course of his extended deal once third-party arrangements are finalised, the code's No. 1 player knows that rejecting AFL advances cost him a salary worth at least twice that amount.
Speaking after hundreds of festive shoppers at Rouse Hill Town Centre witnessed him putting pen to paper on centre stage, Hayne said recent negotiations with the NRL had made him appreciate why so many stars had switched codes in recent years.
He effectively called on the NRL to relax demands on third-party agreements - which stipulate that players must work in return for their sponsorship - to help clubs compete with cashed-up rugby union and AFL franchises. Hayne expressed his concerns to David Gallop in a private meeting two weeks ago, but the NRL boss continues to stand firm.
"It seems like the NRL is letting them go," Hayne said. "It would be good to see the NRL step in. They've let a lot of big-time players go.
"When you lose a lot of quality players the question has to be asked: 'How many more players are they going to let go?' "
Hayne's agent Wayne Beavis said his client's youth had worked in the NRL's favour on this occasion, with the Dally M medallist still searching for a maiden premiership ring and State of Origin series win.
But Hayne said fellow elite players who had achieved every honour - such as Johnathan Thurston and Greg Inglis - faced a "tough headache" to stay in league.
"We can't wait forever," he said. "We can't wait for another four years when it will hit them in the head and then say, 'Let's do something about it now'.
"I know Greg [Inglis] re-signed last year, but when he comes off contract there's going to be some massive questions asked about him. Players like me ... you want to play against the best. You don't want to see them go. We lost Sonny Bill Williams, Mark Gasnier and Craig Gower. You don't want to see them go."
Hayne confirmed he received "interest" from the AFL's Greater Western Sydney (GWS) franchise, but could not imagine playing elsewhere at such a tender stage in his career. Although his re-signing was not made official until 5:37pm, he actually signed a letter of intent with Parramatta in October.
But he refused to rule out a switch to AFL or rugby in the future - and described AFL as a potential challenge when his new contract expires at the end of 2013.
"You look at someone like Karmichael Hunt - he's won a Grand Final and been part of a record-breaking Queensland team - it would be hard to knock back," Hayne said. "When you start off playing sport, that's the reason you play [for the challenge]."
Eels CEO Paul Osborne denied the unprecedented setting for yesterday's announcement was a shot across the bows of GWS, whose Blacktown base is located just a short punt from the new Rouse Hill development.
"Their heartland is around the water pipes over in Blacktown," Osborne quipped.

But Hayne said fellow elite players

Talk about overrating yourself

Hayne you are overrated you only played 6-9 games and only excel against weak defensive teams and teams didnt play thier best, Hayne you failed for the first 14 rounds , you failed at 5/8 you failed at centre
hayne you arent a play maker, you were the worst eels player at the beginning of the year

Until you can perform against the better teams then you may talk

Why does SBW always get mentioned when the Salary Cap comes up??

His departure had nothing to do with it.

why re-sign then if you wanted more money? League will forget about you in 5 mins just like SBW and Gasnier - no player is bigger than their club

Hayne is right, it is as simple as that. We have lost players that should be in our clubs. Most of us here are serious in the way we follow our clubs but MOST people are hooked by big events (eg. They watch Origin) and by the amazing stars. Especially our kids.

The NRL needs to have an unashamed aim to maintain and grow its status as the biggest Club comp out of the 'Rugby' codes. It needs to aim to be the biggest comp in this country and it can't do so when it continually lays down, thinking that getting our biggest stars taken with little opposition is some how good for the game.

We produce amazing players because in part the nature of RL gives them room to develop their game and act as individuals (as opposed to the nature of union) but special stars come along that we cannot just reproduce.

(ps. we could easily support 3 or 4 clubs more if we got our players back from SL and Union)

This is one time I am inclined to listen to the player, good on him for coming out AFTER signing a new deal and not joining the long list of wankers spouting this line just before their own contracts are up.

Actually he is spouting for more money after this contract is up and using the old line of going to another code for more money

Another thing Hayne isnt the player what he is making himself out to be, he only played good 6-9 games this year, so its stupid for him to be saying things like this.

Hayne has shown he is only a fullback and winger, not a playmaker

This must qualify for the most stupidest posts ever.

Hayne:
* Dally M player of the year 2009 (which usually means he was best in the game.
* Aussie Rep
* SOO best player for NSW in 09 and possibly the Series.
* Has played in origin since 2007.
* Single handedly lifted Parra from the cellar to the GF in 09.

Overrating himself??? Are you kidding.

Instead of giving him credit for speaking out in what most people see as something important..... you bag him. Nice....

As bulldog says, the fact that the lad has said this after he took unders to stay in Rugby League is pertinent. He is not angling for more cash for himself in the near future, and really, what he says is true.

He's not asking to lift the salary cap, he's asking for the removal of arbitary third party sponsor rules that are damaging Rugby league's ability to compete financially with lesser sports.

Ironic considering League was the professional form of Rugby and Union was the amateur.

And the free advertising of the game that comes with relaxing of the rules. There still should be some conditions attributed to 3rd party sponsors (must appear in print or TV advertising at least once per 50K of sponsorship). The NRL just needs to learn to make it work for the good of the game.

dally m awards are farcical , no it doesnt mean he is the best in the game (for example farrar got more votes) yet ennis was dally m hooker of the year

he went missing for the first 14 rounds and

played good in state of origin

and was only a threat to depleted teams and teams off thier game
Hayne was lucky the eels played depleted sharks, warriors , out of form knights , tigers , depleted panthers where he got most of his points from

in the grand final , Hayne was no where to be seen , as in round 26 when teams have the attack and defense hayne isnt the player capable of doing damage

Australian rep and done nothing when it matter

So yes Hayne is overrating himself

He hasnt shown the consistency of the players he mentions, until he does then he could say things like this

bolded the part from the article where it says

But he refused to rule out a switch to AFL or rugby in the future - and described AFL as a potential challenge when his new contract expires at the end of 2013.

He will leave if other codes offer him more then league after this contract expires, all he done is what others have done at the end of thier contract using other codes for more money he has used this new contract to try to get more money when its time to renew the contract.

So i dont really see how where people get the idea hayne isnt looking for money, its no different to what thurston is doing except thurston contract is about to expire or has expiired

Agree 100%.

We have idiots like Terry Kennedy in the media who like to use the convenient excuse that thr NRL "has no money".

What I'd like to know is why the biggest comp in two of Australia's three biggest states has no money...

There appears to be no talk of growth coming out of the NRL - it's all negative.

The biggest game in town should not be losing it's stars to rival codes.

Gaba you are a complete goose, find me a more marketable player to the young fans of our game, pull in the proverbail as obviously he doesn't play for your club

Perhaps we should use the fines and even a portion of the salary from the offenders , such as Bird, Gallen and Wicks to fund a retention pot for the games marquee players. If these players step out of line, and we get some thing sensible out of their misdemeanours then the game benefits.

So tell me whats the difference from what thurston or any other player who is coming off contract and what has hayne done in this article, apart from hayne threatening to leave league after his new contract runs out

Hayne is still using other codes to get more money when his contract is up

thats the point im making , im not saying what thurston is doing is right but if people are going to critize him, then hayne isnt any better

when hayne himself hasnt shown any consistency for making his case to get more money
