Not a starting spot... But he needs to be on a skill position depth chart somewhere....

There's no such thing as a specialist kick or punt returner... Well not in a 53 man roster anyway...

If he's going to make the roster he needs to be a kick/punt returner and a serviceable 3rd or 4th string RB.

The better he is at returning kicks/punts... The more leeway and patience they will give his transition to being a RB.

Good points. This is why I dont see him making it, i hope he does but i have my doubts. Sounds like you know better than me though.

So 100k is overs for the sort of contract he's got? Does that mean he's a decent chance of making the playing roster? Do they play trial games before or after they cut the squad to the playing roster?

100K is unheard of for one of the contracts he's got... They may from time to time offer someone 25K to keep them afloat over the spring period while they get ready for camp.... But they have obviously made some sort of commitment to him with a 100K offer.

It's intriguing.... Because it says the Niners are looking at this a little different to everyone else.

But ignore the 3 year part... They will cut him with if they aren't happy...

Hayne will never play Rugby League again,he will do a Lawrence Okoye and give it a good 2-3 year effort to see if he can make it,Hayne isn't coming back to League after the first 20 weeks is up like everyone thinks,he's hanging around Okoye style to give himself the best possible chance of learning the game and getting better.

Yeah, and let's ignore the fact Haynes stats actually put him right in the mix with some of these super human athlete, Hayne, who couldn't win a foot race with Lachlan Coote, Hayne, who'd get burnt by tons of NRL players.

A guy like David Mead would probably be the fastest NFL player in history if Hayne is running a 4.5 something at 27 after a couple months training

lol, the quickest guys over there are on another level quite frankly. Jeff Demps from the Indianapolis Colts won an Olympic silver medal in London as part of the US 4x100 relay team. If the NFL put together a 4x100m relay team, they would beat our Olympic 4x100 team

Hayne could be in with a real shot given what's happened to the 49ers in San Francisco. That team is a total dumpster fire.

There best player has announced he is retiring at age 30. Two of their remaining three best defenders are also retiring or looking like they will be cut because they had their knee blown out a few years ago and aren't going to come good. Their starting running back has signed elsewhere and one of their starting corners is also leaving.

That team went from top floor to cellar dwelling so fast it's crazy.

Maybe they are using him for some publicity stuff hence the increased salary? I remember the London Monarchs signing Ellery Hanley back in the early 90's. He only took one hand off at RB and that was the end of his football career lol.

the continuing focus of the Oz media and Australians in general on his 40-yd time is ridiculous. maybe it would be relevant if a running back actually ran 40 in a straight line each time he received the ball.

Furthermore, they were both hand-timed.

fact is, you can train for all these tests and many who have excelled at all the combine drills have been nobodies in the big league.

his best shot at the mo is as a specialist returner. it's what he has been doing in rugby league for years and is the most transferable skill. if he get in that way, then he has more time to develop the specialisation required for a starting position.

Honestly i have thought about this, Hayne had every media outlet talking about them so its pretty good exposure.

It's been an incredible fall from grace. Since Harbaugh left it's gone to hell in a hand basket

It was my roommates that were training with Hayne recently (including the one that fell over and ate shit on the Sports Tonight story). So I got down and watched him run some drills. He is looking sharp as all hell.

I am still skeptical as to whether or not he will make it and to be honest as a die hard Eel I am torn.

Looks like he is coming along nicely over there. He looks quicker than a lot of his team mates in the suicide/shuttle runs from that footage

His teammates have been doing these drills there whole life and Hayne is already spanking them, what a champ.

True. They start doing shuttle runs to plastic cones and witches hats from the age of 2 in the US. How he can come over and just run to them faster is amazing.

Good luck to the bloke. Hope he makes it and brains them.
