I was basing some of my assessment on whether a guilty verdict is registered. I think that has a bearing on how sponsors, clubs etc react.

I think there is an element of truth to the whole ‘mud sticks’ thing but equally if this case is disproven I think it will largely be those that already dislike him that will hold on to it. Others will forgive and forget and the narrative will be more about how the dodgy ‘wannabe virgin christian’ stitched him up. People in sports and in particular the NRL can be quick to forgive if you happen to be a superstar.

Agree though that if he is found guilty he’s f**ked and if it is proven that she has been lying then she deserves everything she gets. It probably won’t be that black and white though.

In the US civil court what allows a case to go ahead? Does any evidence need to be provided to start civil proceedings or can anyone just launch a civil case against another?

Obviously a criminal case needs some evidence to charge a person but does a civil one?

Sports stars that have been responsible for some of the most hideous misdemeanours are regularly welcomed back into the fold if they are good enough. In fact, if they come back and do great things on the field it isn't long before they are celebrated as 'heroes' again.

I understand the point about reputation and accept that it is an issue. But is it really a big issue?

Rape is a pretty big allegation to level at someone in this day and age. And (evidently) Jarryd Hayne identifies pretty strongly as being a Christian. So maybe this might affect him more than you think.

However with birth control and whatnot, not to mention women becoming independent, fornication is no longer considered to be socially dangerous or even irresponsible. If no merkin is actually getting hurt then where's the harm?

Full on god squad members used to follow the full Old Testament rules (written for Jews, not Christians). Jesus came to set people free from the curse of the law, but it is taking many Christians a long time to get past the old laws. Humans like having rules. Even if they don't always follow them.
