Hayne to the NFL???

Hayne has almost 0% of making it.
NFL teams simply don't like 27 year old project players.
If he wanted to go into the NFL he needed to make the decision many years, go to college for a few years, learn the game and hope he has the skills to make it in the pros.
He left it too late.
I just can't see any NFL teams taking the risk.
Especially when there will 200 more skilled, more knowledgable, 21 year olds waiting to be drafted next April.

It is okay to have dreams and try to fulfil them but there comes a point when you have to realise a dream may just be that.

agreed
if he went over as 20 year old, into college for 2-3 years and then declared for the draft, he'd probably be at least a servicable NFL player. He's just left it too late

For sure.

There must be some ability to do it however, he isn't the first non-citizen to try this sort of thing.

Some pacific islanders have an ability to get foreign passports that Australians don't have, not sure Fiji is in this boat however.

I mean surely his management hasn't forgotten about this issue.

Yep, I think Somoa (possibly Tonga).

It would make sense if he said I've got a try out as a kicker or a kick return etc fom club X, but to say I'm off (with no guarantees) to chase a (highly unlikely) dream is bizzare,

It's what the NRL need to do to grow the competitions profile internationally, the game has the ability to be attract a niche following internationally just like the NFL does here, so maybe one day instead of an NRL player leaving to play NFL it's an NFL player wanting to play in the NRL. It's pie in the sky stuff now but you have to start somewhere.

Mate, it was an inhouse joke - some of the another posters will get it.

Not many people with the talent of J Hayne, thats for sure.

The Panthers made the top 4 and the 3rd week of the finals this year (and blew a second to none chance of making the decider) without a single player who earns even half what Hayne does. Parramatta ran 10th and crumbled in the latter stages of the season even with Hayne on board and playing quite well.

Not suggesting he isn't worth it, but having a single marquee player surrounded by plodders does not bring success in this competition.

Canard, that is what I meant. You need guaranteed employment to receive a green card or win one in the annual lottery.

The doorknocking is absolute bullshit.

He's played for Australia in league he will have no problem getting a p 1 visa.

Explain how that one works, Pete. Thanks.

The united states is pretty easy going when it comes to highly skilled temporary visa's. As an internationally recognised athlete he won't have any problems qualifying. Like Willie mason in 06.

I just don't think Hayne or his advisors realize how adverse NFL teams would be at taking a 'punt' on a 27 year old who has never played the game.

Practice squad maybe.

He might see some action in the pre-season game.

Might.

Many college kids with more desire, with more talent, more skill, and more knowledge have not made it into the NFL. That's when they go to Canada ...

I remember a bloke called Manfred Moore who was a former 49'er and who played for Newtown in the 70's. He used to throw these 50 metre passes across the field but given forward passes aren't allowed in our game, that's about all he could do. He lasted just 4 matches.

Guys like Ben Graham and Sav Rocca went over with no guarantees

They weren't trying to be actual "footballers" though.

That's what makes it all the more admirable to be honest. Its not like SBW chasing the bucks.

Wazza Ryan (or Singo) experiment, was he not?

Only mental midgets think him succeeding is good for the NRL. If he does well then they start sending scouts over here which will weaken the talent depth we have.

If you're an NRL accountant it may be good in the future by growing niche interest in the US. But if you're an NRL fan it is not good. The NRL making more money does nothing for us. The NRL losing talent does hurt us.

Has he actually said he wants to play a non punting position? Or are people here with overactive imaginations?

There is likely to be maybe what 3 people even attempt this sort of thing in the next 50 years?

Yes he has said that.

He has a dream of playing in the NFL, not being a punter.
