plan b is the NRL pay him extras using Smith's shortsighted new discretionary powers to get him back and then another handful of stars leave for 12 months to return after more handouts from the NRL.

Doesn't make financial sense.

Lose around 1 to 1.5M in earnings, in your prime, with the hope that you can get a 200K upgrade on your contract in 2 years time?

I don't believe that for a second.

NRL chief executive Dave Smith said he tried to keep Hayne in the game, but there was no chance.

“This is one of those clear-cut cases where I would have been happy to use my marquee player discretion to try to keep Jarryd in the NRL,” Smith said.

“In fact, I was in contact with Jarryd, his manager and the Eels management last night and this morning to see if there was anything we could do to keep him in the game.

“But Jarryd has a dream and he deserves the chance to pursue that dream.

“He is a gifted athlete who has been a wonderful asset for Rugby League and we wish him well in his next challenge.”

Player managers everywhere just blew their loads, all they have to do is threaten leaving and the NRL will give them more money, stupid shortsighted solution.

Meh... He's 27 soon. That's generally the start of a steady decline in outside backs. Too late to try this imo.

You really think Seattle would cut a player that helped them win the Super Bowl last year to sign a bloke with no experience on decent money for the sake of it?

No, not at all.

Let's be serious if he really wanted to try out gridiron, he would probably obtain a college scholarship and progress, with a highly unlikely, from there to the NFL.

I just can't see that doorknocking NFL clubs is likely.

It is a gimmick (marketing) or maybe, as a poster has said, they have tested his punting ability (and like what they seen) and maybe see a secondary use as a kick return but do NFL clubs want their punter returning kicks (fear of injury) as well.

It is called a gimmick (marketing).

So you believe he is going to doorknock NFL clubs, who is living on this planet now?
You do understand that Jarryd Hayne has NO leverage at all in this situation...

They have a college system full of Jarryd Haynes every season...

I understand that the NFL isn't your strong suit... But what your suggesting actually makes no sense in either a football or a business sense.

there are unsigned free agents with 10 times the marketability of Hayne who would make far, far more sense to sign...

I mean that if he doesn't make it he still comes back to the game likely earning more than he could have had he stayed, the new powers provides incentive for players to leave knowing they will be more valuable coming back from another sport.

Sandow to Fullback, Kelly to halfback.

Parra can move on, at no expense....

Don't disagree per se.

But you to not get a pay cheque for a year of two in your prime is a massive chunk of change to miss out on.

Sorry Hayne, I hope you fail.

If Hayne succeeds, what's to stop the next Hayne/Inglis chasing big money in the NFL? The NRL, even with exemptions, can't compete with NFL money.

The upside is that, if he succeeds, RL can sell itself as a pathway to the NFL...

I would predict that NFL gets more love in places like Melbourne/Adelaide/WA than NRL does. Even if its just convincing VFL kids to have a go at touch footy just to have a crack, its a foot in the door for RL.

NRL will never actually turn into a pathway for NFL, but the link could product a bit of interest.

Here is one. If, as said, he was going to doorkock NFL clubs, wouldn't he need a "green card" to work/play in the USA?

Did he win one in the annual lottery? Doubt it.

Surely, you can't try out (doorknocking) NFL on a holiday visa.

He is on some sort of guarantee.

Mate, I agree it doesn't make sense. Another poster mentioned a Canadian player being more marketable.

Are they doing it tough financially?...

No. They arent'

How would signing some bloke no one in america has ever f**king heard of count as a gimmick? How would that help them?

And no, i dont think Hayne will be door knocking, i think he will get himself in to a program of some sort and maybe train with a team, try and make it via the practice squad or via the draft if he's eligible to apply for draft consideration, or maybe he has a try out with some teams already line up, but he's not signing there as f**king gimmick. Honestly. there isnt a f**king team in the NFL who would gain anything from signing Hayne as a gimmick

Dude .He is already well off financially ,he can go to the states ,he will live very comfortably for a couple of years chasing his dream in the hope of cracking the NFL .Success or failure he will return to Aus a millionaire with property in Sydney ,and will easily pickup another multi million $ deal either in the NRL or Rugby. It's not as he is risking it all and if it doesn't work out he will have to dig holes for the council! he's hardly putting all his balls on the line here.Worst case scenario it's a double gap year.If it is his dream he'd be crazy not to go for it when you think about it.

People who think they just hand out roster spots for the sake of it in the NFL should watch hard knocks

It's most likely that Hayne has secured a spot on a practice squad. I doubt any team would just chuck him straight onto the 53 man roster

Tim Tebow isn't a Canadian player, he's a yank who got cut by 3 different teams despite being a college phenom, and a world wide celebrity especially in the Christian community
