If ever there was a tough year to choose the winners of the annual Halberg Awards for New Zealand's Sportsmen and Women, and Team, of the Year it will be 2010.

That was apparent from the announcement of the finalists on New Year's Day. The awards are to be presented on February 10.

The difficulty in narrowing the choice is apparent from the fact that five, rather than the usual four, finalists have been named in the sportswoman and sports team categories.

The finalists are:

Sportsman of the Year:
Richie McCaw (Rugby)
Benji Marshall (League)
Ryan Nelsen (Football)
Jossi Wells (X games)

Sportswoman of the Year:
Valerie Adams (Athletics)
Nikki Hamblin (Athletics)
Joelle King (Squash)
Alison Shanks (Cycling)
Casey Williams (Netball)

Sports Team of the Year:
All Blacks (Rugby)
All Whites (Football)
Kiwis (League)
Eric Murray and Hamish Bond (Rowing)
Silver Ferns (Netball)

Coach of the Year
Graham Henry (Rugby)
Riki Herbert (Football)
Stephen Kearney (League)
Gordon Tietjens (Sevens)

In the last year the All Whites won 1 match in 9 starts so to me i don't really see how or why they should get the team gong.

I'm hoping for:

Man = Ryan Nelsen
Woman = Alison Shanks
Team = Eric Murray and Hamish Bond
Coach = Ricki Herbert
Moment = All Whites Gooaaalll!
Emerging talent = Jacko Gill

If Skinner hadn't of put the reminder up I would have completely forgotten to vote for the All Whites.

Thanks, Skinz. :thumn

A lot of people don't like to knock the All whites but they had an easy route to the WC. As you mentioned they hardly won a game all year. Granted they had some draws but surely soccer is about winning.

Likewise. (Although I did put in a sentimental vote for the Kiwis, too! ;-))

I'm very meh about Halbergs, the Kiwi snub after their WC win (and Sophie Pascoe, winner of FIVE-count 'em-Gold medals) was utterly snobby and disgraceful.
Nevertheless, put my vote in.

hmmmm

anyone want to read something into this ???

controversy ???

Love them or hate them, the Halberg Awards set tongues wagging and the winner of the team category in Auckland tonight should spark vigorous discussion around New Zealand.
2010 was a standout year for New Zealand teams, with the performances of the All Whites, All Blacks, Silver Ferns and Kiwis all providing compelling arguments.

It's only controversial if you didn't vote for the All Whites. That's the word, anyway. That and Ryan Nelsen.

My only interest is the public vote one, and that'd only be if you can see the percentage of each.

The actual awards are total snobfests, and of course they are subjective, but it's the same boring old farts voting for the some things that are media viagra. Seriously, I never got over the Kiwis winning the WC and on the news, the majority of the report was of the ABs in England, watching the game, and what they thought of it! FFS
