The US for me, I picked them as I like the music better. However it would be hard to argue the influence the uk bands had in comparison to the US 3 decades ago.

The UK wins as far as influence and ratio of amazing bands to good-average bands go, however if you look at sheer numbers... the US will win moreso due to population really.

If its band vs band, then i would say the brits win. However if it's which country has been more influential in rock music then it's USA by a mile. Remember where Rock came from - american blues musicians.

Chuck berry
John lee Hooker
Muddy waters
Robert Johnson
B.B King
Bo Diddley
Bob Dylan

While I believe Britain has contributed more to music than what the US of A has I believe a lot of you in here are forgetting some intrumental figures that have come out of the States. Including:

Aerosmith
Alice Cooper
Alice In Chains
At The Drive In
Audioslave
The Beach Boys
Beastie Boys
Beck
Ben Folds Five
Billy Joel
Black Keys
Black Crowes
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Blink 182
Blue Oyster Cult
Bob Dylan
Bon Jovi
Boston
Bruce Springsteen
Cake
The Cars
Creedeance Clearwater Revival
Dandy Warhols
The Doors
Dream Theatre
Eagles of Death Metal
Elvis Presley
Faith No More
Flaming Lips
Foo Fighters
Goo Goo Dolls
Green Day
Guns N Roses
Jeff Buckley
Johnny Cash
The Killers
Kings Of Leon
Kiss
Linkin Park
Live
Mars Volta
Matchbox 20
Meat Loaf
Metallica
MGMT
The Misfits
Modest Mouse
Nine Inch Nails
Nirvana
No Doubt
The Offspring
Pearl Jam
The Pixies
Queens of the Stone Age
R.E.M.
Rage Against The Machine
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Silversun Pickups
Slayer
Smashing Pumpkins
Sonic Youth
Sound Garden
Stone Temple Pilots
The Strokes
Talking Heads
Tom Petty
Tool
Van Halen
Velvet Revolver
Weezer
The White Stripes

I'm probably forgetting a few but I believe my point has been demonstrated. There have been an abundance of good rock bands from the States BUT ultimately the British have done more for Rock music than what the States have IMO.

Game Set Match

lets not forget Poison, Ratt, Motely Crue, WASP....and even though Quiet Riot was a one hit wonder they pretty much brought upon the LA Scene from that one song, imo that means they were inspirational in their own right:D

The Brits havehad some quality performers though, it's a tought match up but i'll lean towards the US.

to be honest 80% of the bands in that list aren't on a par with the few brit bands that have been named

f**k, the spice girls have outperformed most of those US bands

I've thought about this topic before.

The very fact that Britain has the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd already beat anything that the US could offer. Hell you could just put the Beatles alone.

I've often thought it ironic that rock n roll is one of the defining characteristics of white American culture, but it originated from black blues musicians and was revolutionised and made an accessible art form by the British. Ok that was a huge generalisation but you know what I mean. :p

A prime Spice Girls is, sadly, greater than any band in history...

Lol, pete's list is dreadful. Is it supposed to be supporting or against the US' cause? I mean he puts the Eagles of Death Metal on there but not one of the US' all time highest selling artists in the Eagles on there?

Massive oversight on my part.

I did imply that I felt like I was forgetting some huge acts on there.

Obviously you didn't read the rest of my post though as I made my point rather clear. While the British may have the best bands based on quality and influence a lot of posters seemed to be underating the US of A and it's influence on Rock music.

But yeah thanks for picking up on my oversight! Can't believe I forgot about the Eagles!

Not to mention I also forgot about:

Iggy Pop
Velvet Underground
Chuck Berry (and all the other musicians listed by mongoose)

My problem with your list is i'd hardly say bands like Cake, Mars Volta, Kings of Leon, the Dandy Walhols etc are big or influential bands. This thread is rather pointless if we're just going to list our favourite bands. If we're talking about the truly big influential artists of the history of rock then I'd give the nod to the Brits for 1960-1989 and the US from 1990 to present but overall to the Brits.

No I was just saying they're good bands that may inspire a new generation of musicians. Of course if the point of my post was to list acts that have inspired others than those bands (as well as The Killers and so on) wouldn't feature.

Of course I strongly believe the British have the best bands. When you have Led Zep, The Who and The Stones you win automatically.
