The player "Rocket" Rod Reddy was a true legend of the game and one of my favourite players as a kid.Rocket Rod Reddy was a true legend of a player & did us a favour in not taking up the coaching role as it delivered us David Waite.
The coach "Rocket" Rod Reddy was supposed to take over the St George side from Brian Smith in 1996. When St George refused the Super League offer sometime in 1995, the next step for this nefarious organisation, headed by Rupert Murdoch and his cur John Ribot, was to systematically destroy our great club by paying players ridiculous amounts of money to join rivals, mainly Cronulla, while Reddy sold his soul by taking over the reins at the Adelaide Rams- Cronulla already had the experienced John Lang at the helm. This led to St George having a decimated squad and no coach leading up to the 1996 season. The proverbial "Knight in Shining Armour", David Waite, answered the SOS to coach St George, and took over for the 1996 season. Court cases and more money meant that St George got back most of their players, except for the traitorous Gordon Tallis, who believed his principles meant that he should sit out the 1996 season rather than play for the club with which he had a legally binding contract. Indeed, Tallis has said that his St George team mates would ring him weekly to try and change his mind, but he refused, again believing he was being true to his principles by not playing for St George. I wonder how the 1996 grand final would have panned out had Tallis donned the St George jersey? We will never know.
So, back to your statements.
I agree that Reddy was a true legend of the game as a player, but his actions in the Super League war cannot be ignored, and ultimately, his status as a traitor is well-earned. Has he ever stated publicly what he now thinks of what he did, either saying it was wrong or he still believes that he did the right thing by his family at the expense of loyalty for the club he once proudly served? I've never heard it, but I would be interested to know if he did. At least Tallis is on record as saying he still believes what he did was correct.
His actions certainly delivered us David Waite, but this was hardly planned. He betrayed St George, and this meant we got Waite. In no way can this be credited to Reddy, nor is it any source of redemption for his traitorous act.
These are my opinions. You are welcome to have a different one.
