It also makes a mockery of the entire competition. There’s major implications here for the NRL. If it is allowed to happen then obviously clubs will have more reason to fiddle with ‘salaries’ and ‘contracts’ and, very quickly, there will be a handful of stacked sides and a bunch of non-competitive sides. Clubs will basically buy premierships. This is all contrary to the expansion plans of the NRL and the basis of the salary cap system.
This is a BIG scenario. If the NRL and auditors sit on their hands I will be amazed. If they let this go through to the keeper it will be reasonable to say the game has been destroyed; it’s just not rugby league.
Exactly this!

Usually the Board would set policy and strategic plans and would delegate to the CEO the authority and responsibility to implement their decisions and instructions.

It is considered very dysfunctional and poor corporate governance for the Board, or the Chairman or any individual directors, to directly engage in operational management.

If the CEO is given an explicit directive by the Board and chooses to defy it, most likely the CEO would promptly lose his job but I would expect that the consequences of the CEO’s defiance would be very, very difficult to challenge for any aggrieved party. However, no doubt, if the board considered the CEO’s decision to be of sufficient consequence, they could simply override it and attempt to reverse or revise it.
Thanks mate so he can do , bugger all really ........

Never in the hunt: Dragons star wanted out before Flanagan signed

Shane Flanagan backs himself as a figure of influence, but he is wasting his time meeting Ben Hunt this week as the Dragons skipper has made up his mind that he wants to leave the club.
Barring some kind of unexpected intervention from the Dragons, Hunt will reinforce that view at the meeting.

NRL Highlights: Dragons v Warriors - Round 17

St.George Illawarra Dragons take on the New Zealand Warriors in Round 17 of the 2023 NRL Premiership.
The fact Flanagan has not been an attraction for Hunt to stay has been conveniently ignored by those who trumpet his ability to recruit players. Paul Gallen was crucial in bringing players to Cronulla during Flanagan’s time at the club between 2010 and 2018.
Hunt has told his inner circle he has nothing against Flanagan. The pair talked a few weeks ago, after Flanagan had been announced as the new Dragons coach. Flanagan went public to say he and Hunt were on the same page and on good terms. Hunt did not give Flanagan any assurance about his future at the club. Hunt had already told the Dragons he wanted out before Flanagan was appointed.

The club asked him to hold off on making anything official until it announced a new coach. Flanagan should know that within 72 hours of his conversation with Hunt, the Dragons skipper had informal discussions with another coach at a rival team. Money was not discussed, nor terms, as per NRL rules, but Hunt’s ambition and qualities certainly were.

In other words, the signing of Flanagan had no effect on him. Hunt made his mind up to leave the Dragons after his 300th NRL game on May 13. Another flogging, 42-22, was the final straw.
The club had promised to make significant signings to support him. They never came. Instead, he was left to be the face of their on-field and off-field mistakes time and again. He is sick and tired of being that person.
The enormity of what the Dragons are dealing with is not lost on Flanagan, who is set to lessen his media commitments. He may also have to deal with unrest surrounding another star, Zac Lomax.

Hunt did not want to play in Friday’s big loss to the Warriors, and only did so for his teammates. Queensland is his preferred destination and he hopes to work out a deal with a club in his home state. He has no history with new Gold Coast coach Des Hasler, but has been an admirer from afar

I CANT WAIT FOR THIS BLOKE TO BE GONE AND HOPEFULLY ERASED FROM THE HISTORY BOOKS OF THE DRAGONS.
So what! Who gives a flying **** if the piss weak mongrel wants out. He’s proven himself to be a top class arsehole. I wrote to Webb in August last year to explain my opinion that he shouldn’t be given a new contract (the one and only time I’ve done such a thing. My family laughed at me.) It’s long been my opinion that Hunt has been the primary cause of our poor performance. Yeah ‘best player‘ and all that, but I strongly believe he has been poison for us. It will be a profound relief when he finally fcks off and we can start building a competitive footy team again.
I hope he plays for the Broncs in the 23 grand final and that they get smashed.

I won't be wishing him or the team he plays for any luck.

At least it will give us a reason to engage with a passion in the 23 finals series.

I dont know if anyone has thought of this. We can win both ways here. Make Hunt play ressies till season end and then sell him to the Bulldogs for a player swap plus money next year. We get someone we want and Hunt is stuck in Sydney for 2 more years and then can just wreck the Bulldogs with his sooky attitude. And no one up north gets who they wanted. Its a win win all around

I can't believe our club hasn't come out and made a statement re all the speculation this weekend.

It only has to be simple.

As far as we are concerned Ben Hunt has a contract with us until the end of 2025.

We will sit down and listen to Ben Hunt on Monday to hear his concerns.

We will not be releasing Ben without adequate compensation for this and future seasons nor until a complete investigation by the NRL into all facts scrounging Ben's request for a release.

I believe if the Dragons release him without adequate compensation, the club is not run by passionate St George people, more like the board is made up by a Rorter, a Donkey, a Scumulla, a Riff and co

If our board was smart enough (high doubts there) they will realise that the 24/25 season is where we hold most of the cards.
If Hunt must go (and probably for the best) do a loan arrangement for the rest of the year, with possibly money our way and then offer out his contract for the 24/25 seasons to get as much as possible from it

Nothing should happen Monday or Tuesday.
If it was the corporate world, Little Benny, and I gather his manager, will sit down with Flanno and Spider to identify the problem and the reason/s. They will obviously state their preferred position (immediate exit) and anything else they wish to offer.
Now we know they can’t offer anything else as the club hasn’t given him permission to negotiate with other clubs.
Spider then reports to the Board.
If if fact the Board then decides to grant a release subject to certain conditions, it is only then that he and his manager can talk to clubs.
It is then a game of wait and see what his management can negotiate with potential suitors and then put any offers to the club. This is when the horse trading starts.
It is fair to say that Benny has played his last game. It’s now just a case of when they f**k him off. In the meantime he can count his dollars, start packing and get some removalists quotes.
