Once again Ben Hunts kicking game has really cost us in today’s game . He is so one dimensional and predictable. Not only was his kicking game questionable his poor defensive reads were costly as well . The whole team today should collectively hang their heads in shame. Playing against 13 with no reserves for the whole second half really was embarrassing considering the result.

He's our leader and today, again, he went missing when needed.

Been missing since he joined so many years ago
Just now I was thinking exactly the same as you, saintmar.

I think that since Hunt joined us in 2018 as the "specialist" half that Mary wanted to partner Gareth Widdop in the halves and forked out big money to get him from the Broncos who probably were glad to get rid of him, Hunt has not brought about a big change in our fortunes and has mostly gone missing.

Under Mary and Hook he was average in most games as a half. He showed some quality in particular in 2022 when he was thought to be the Dally M winner in that year only to be outdone by Nicho Hynes. To date he is up and down like the rest of the team under Hook and now Flanno.

It is time for Flanno to put his foot down and play Hunt as the 9 with Liddle on the bench. Not bother with Damien Cook (maybe too late now?) and bring in a "proper" halfback who can week in and out lead the team around the park in both attack and defence.

We need changes and need players (keep mentioning better forwards and a solid fullback - have been keen to see Sloan shine but hasn't reached that level needed to be significant in the squad). We might be slightly improving under Flanno but slight doesn't get you more wins needed to be in the finals. Flanno has to get us much better for the years ahead. It is a must and doing something about it now is necessary.

Time is running out.

Agree but who plays half back?

Possibly a naive observation but didn't we recently play our best game in years without Hunt (ie; Rnd 13 v Penrith)?

I know ... they were depleted also ...etc. but the proof of the pudding IS in the eating.

Seriously, why are sweating about Ben Hunt so incessantly?

Whether he's a marquee player or not, we played great footy without him (and with JDB as Captain if I'm not mistaken).

I think Hunt is a marquee player but only at hooker not at half. Bring in a really solid halfback and have Hunt at half and the Dragons will be flying. Look how well Qld go when he is the 9 and they have DCE in the halves. If Saints had Mitch Moses at half and Hunt at hooker they would absolutely kill it. Actually is Saints can land Lachlan Illias and put him in the halves with KFlanno and Hunt at hooker it may work well. Maybe even Atkinson from the Sharks and throw him in the halves with KFlanno.

Right idea. Not sure Flanno is thinking along the same line in respect of Hunt unfortunately

It does my head in. StGI isn't just all about BHunt, regardless of whether he's great, good, bad or indifferent at 7.9 or 6.

I wonder whether the solution to the so called 'culture problem' at StGI is much more subtle than simply shedding players that have reputation issues or purported arrogant personality traits or whatever.

Put it this way: if I was a member of the squad, regardless of my personal opinion about Ben as a player/teammate/ captain, I'd be fed-up to the back teeth hearing about him - as if he's the irreplaceable icon of the club.

Regarding Wollongong: I just cant see it being a real issue. Townsville manage to maintain a decent squad; the Dolphins pulled one together from scratch; Newcastle .... the Warriors.

Surely the commute can't be a problem ... they're professional athletes on big coin ... just car pool .... they'd all be driving Mercs, Jags and Porsches anyway, surely. If they want to pool some money they can pay me to be their chauffer.
