yes it could

if he had informed the club early in the season then the coach would have had a look at the player market

anyone decent has been signed up by now

and Hayne gets a season ending injury? announces he is going to the NFL on crutches? lol

The only way he could guarantee he would be injury free is wait till seasons end.

Who are these decent players signed up ? compared to guys now apparently available like brett stewart, Hoffman, barba etc...

Exactly.

Who has the list of off contracted players?

Ok, so, relative to October 14, do you think there were more players off-contract for 2015 in say, June 2014, or or fewer?

I know Jarryd's you're mate and that's fine. But you can't seriously argue that the difficulty in replacing a given player (particularly a star) does not change as the year progresses. By October most teams have the core of their rosters pretty much nailed down. By October we've already made the majority of our retention decisions. So if key player decides to wait til OCtober to make/confirm a decision that he wants to leave mid-contract, there is simply not the same scope to for the club to act in October as there would have been earlier in the year (regardless of whether any announcement was made publicly).

Anyway, good luck to him.

Say Hayne tells the club at the beginning of the season, who were the fullbacks that were off contract march this year for season 2015?

Go through the list:

Milford - Signed with the Broncos
Boyd - Still has a yr to go at Newcastle, returning home to QLD.
Perrett - Still has a contract at the Dogs
Mini - Retiring
Stewart - Has a contract at Manly
Slater - Has a contract at Manly
Coote - Has a contract at the Cowboys
Hoffman - Has a contract at the Broncos
Barba- Has a contract at the Broncos
Moylan - Upgraded his contract at penrith
Gordan - Has a contract at the Sharks
Tedessco - stayed at the Tigers
Zillman - Contract at the Titans
Dugan - Has a contract at the Dragons
The Warriors fullback has a 4yr deal with the club

So whether Hayne pulls the pin Round 1 or after the GF, there were no fullbacks available unless I have missed some.

Reece Robinson. Plus we already had a fullback on the books in Will Hopoate. So we only need to replace Hayne with a centre.

Hayne could have left after round 1 next year and Jodeci would defend him

We didn't have to replace him with a fullback.

And obviously different people are claiming different things, but the public announcement was that if hayne comes back it will be to parra, so that makes even more sense that we wouldn't necessarily target a fullback long term.

Why wouldn't I defend him?

He carried this club for the past 6 years

He has set himself one of the most impossible tasks ever to be achieved in modern day sport.

He didnt walk in round 1 or round 10, he waited till the end of the season and did everything he could to get us a finals berth.

But yet people want to bag the bloke.

Give me a break.

Valid point Bigfella

So if we loss a halfback, we moved our hooker to 7 and then sign a 9?

Makes sense to me

So apart from Milford in the above list who is changing clubs this year and I don't know we would have wanted him anyway, had we known Jarryd was leaving earlier we could have looked to replace him with a fullback, a centre or a five-eighth and move Hoppa or Norman to 1.

Enough semi-decent players (not depth signings) have moved clubs in these positions this year but we couldn't chase them cause we had no vacancy until 14th October.

Blake Austin
Sisa Waqa
Krisnan Inu
Mitch Brown
James Roberts
Kevin Naiqama

And we may have chosen to take a gamble on Loko's fitness as well.

Let's me guess, a centre?

So who was off contract at the beginning of this year that we could of got for next year regarding that position?

Shall we go through the list again?

Are you really suggesting that we wouldn't have had more choice regarding how to adjust to Jarryd's leaving if we had more notice? As well as players who were off contract in 2015, the chances of negotiating a release for other players is arguably higher if both clubs have longer to negotiate/adjust the rest of their roster. Earlier notice means we still have all the options currently available to us today, plus some more. And, we have better information when determining who to let go, who to retain.

We were never going to retain any of the blokes who we have let go.

Sio was never a chance, they wanted him to take a pay cut.

Loko was being shop around

Fui, despite him asking the club for one more year, they made it clear that this would be his last year

Smith, always going to retire

Kelepie, they released him despite having a year left

Have I missed anyone?

Luke Kelly looks like he is staying for another year and I'm not too sure what Sef is doing yet.

Tonga was told that he wouldnt be getting any extensions.

I agree.

Led the NRL in running meters, and busted his hump vs Newie and Canberra - despite being the only bloke out there trying. Even if he had decided himself he was leaving, he was doing everything possible to play finals footy.
