Do you reckon all the prior instances of ball tampering had no one in the team discussit prior to doing it? .... surely there would be a discussion beforehand

To me there are different degrees of tampering ... we conceived a plan to get some tape, rub it in dirt, rub it on the ball ... then when you get sprung, try n send out a secret message n put it in your undies .... lol - its laughable that anyone would think we could get away with any of it

I'm not sure it's quite that there are different degrees of tampering in terms of 'wrongness'....if you are attempting to manipulate the balls condition using a method that is illegal, then the degree of 'wrongness' should be the same. I don't think it's any more (or less) wrong to use tape than it is to use ointments, or mouth lozenges. But it's a lot, lot more stupid.

Realistically the whole idea of ball tampering is a joke... Merkins rub their sweat on the ball complete with sunblock, merkins chew gum which increases saliva and contains sugar... It's no different to a lozenge. Nor is a bit of turf on some tape going to have more of an effect than deliberate bounce throws into the square.

The unforgivable thing for me is that utter lack of imagination it shows. Smith is saying we need to cheat to beat South Africa because he can't think of a way to do it otherwise

I don't know.
But this is the first time a team has been stupid enough to admit there was a preconceived plan to deliberately break the laws of the game.
In the past, it has only been the individual who has been chastened. This time, it is a team, or team hierarchy decision to do so.
This has now become so much worse than any other ball tampering incident due to that fact.

In fairness, Pakistan was absolutely a team decision in terms of the bottle caps, albeit a different era.

Possibly, but did they come out on the day of the offence and say "Yeh, at lunch we opened a few bottles of Coke, and decided that gee, this little bottle top cap could improve the reverse swing we can get this afternoon".
Maybe that discussion happened, but they weren't f**king stupid enough to come out and admit it.

Smith has come out today and admitted that there was a conceived plan to cheat. I'm not sure that has ever happened in the history of cricket - hence the uproar and the outrage.
He is really going to suffer from this extraordinarily stupid and ignorant judgement, and as captain of this nation's premier international sporting team, so he should.
Personally, I still cannot believe it happened. Tactically, he might be somewhat inept, but morally, I held him in higher esteem than what he has admitted today. I really didn't think it was in his character.

Yeah it's a farce.

Like I said, it's not even the ball tampering. Realistically I could think of fifty more effective ways to alter the condition of the ball, and a dozen at least would be legal. It's the Aussie captain coming out and admitting that he is so clueless he resorted to cheating in an effort to turn the game around....

Steve Waugh is my favourite ever captain. Tactically, Tugga wasn't a genius, and even he never resorted to out and out cheating despite his win at almost all costs mentality. He always tried to do it the right way, or at least just on the edge of what the right way was at the time.

If you're going to rough the thing up, throw it into the f**king wicket until the umpires whinge like everyone else FFS...

I haven't seen the presser with Steve Smith but from all reports he has readily admitted the leadership group discussed it prior, and also that he won't be standing down. To me, that shows that Smith has no appreciation of the gravity of the situation whatsoever. Like he doesn't really understand that ball tampering is AGAINST THE RULES!!! It's almost like they're saying, "yeah we broke the rules, but it's only a little breach, what's the big deal?"

I'm disappointed too but I don't believe they should be punished any more harshly than others who've done the same thing just for being stupid about how they did it and then owning up to it. If anything the players who continue to deny what they've done should receive a greater punishment.

I'd like you to list all 50 in order of effectiveness

There's a story going round that South African crime figures kidnapped Warner's wife and said that they wouldn't release her unless Australia deliberately got caught cheating. Something to do with betting and shit.

PS: I started the story.

I got up to 14 and then realised I couldn't be f**ked and had a glass of red instead.

It was the effectiveness hierarchy that got me, if I'm honest

You made a fair call.

The OCI had some sort of Doof Doof festival on, and no matter where you sat you couldn't the person next to you.
