Is there a point to this thread Ron? The list is just as big of a joke as Rolling Stones. As others have said, no Vaughan, Clapton or Knoffler and another one which I haven't seen mentioned yet is B.B. King. The ratings for Vai and Satch are pathetic and how can Adam Jones be number 9 ahead of these blokes and others like Brian May? Tool would be in my top 5 bands of all time but it's not because of Jones' guitar work.

I agree with you on some points eg vai, clapton, King etc Knoffler is over-rated imo, what made him so special?

The point is this was voted by the people! see how opinions vary?

The list also takes into accounts the great 80's guitarists, guitarists who incorperated all the repitore and skills needed to be an accomplished guitarist.

Glad to see Slash up there as well.

Satch should at least be in the top ten.

IMO, better than Vai. Vai is too much a cliche "show off".

Vai is better. And Satriani was with Eddie at a time my biggest influence. Vai is just so slick on the guitar. He makes it look like the guitar is just too easy and needs a new challenge.

I can understand that CC Eagle. Some of his instrumental albums are brilliant but dull - if that makes sense.

So I would recommend Sex & Religion, which is an absolute masterpeice - I consider it one of the best albums of the 90s - and has the added bonus of Devin Townsend on vocals and Terry Bozzio on drums.

I recommend ALL of you check this out track called "Touching Tongues - listen all the way, Devin's vocals are absolutely stunning when they kick in halfway through.

And don't tell me Vai doesn't have feel.

Great song, amazing stuff.

Look perverse i agree some of those results dont do justice eg vai and satch, but atleast they have included many guitarist ( metal) that rolling stones never knew existed.

Glad to see Warren Demartini in it, although reckon he should be around 40, same with Buxton.

Rolling Stone is just tripe for the masses. People who know very little about music buy Rolling Stone so obviosly what they are force fed in the regular articles is going to show in polls like this!

Jerry Cantrell at #38! Glad he gets mentioned at all!

And Veron Reid at #68? Please. He gets nowhere near as much credit as he deserves. And no Page Hamilton? Also Hendrix @ number 12 is a bit iffy... altough I 'spoise many people will argue he's "not as good as he's made out to be"...

Mate i was a huge Hendrix fan whilst at high school, thought he the sh*t, then i starting playing other styles and using different influences then thought 'was Hendrix really that good', i ended up throwing out his music books etc they were as informative as my Nirvana books at the time. I learnt alot more about the guitar and playing from other influences then Jimi. Jimi was good in his own right dont get me wrong, he was influential, but i could name dozens of other guitarists with more skill then he.

I would much rather listen to Jimi doing ''the wind cried Mary'' than say... Van Halen destroying a classic old Kinks song.

I am surprised no one has mentioned the absolute hilariousness of both ACDC guitarists making the top 3...

Worst lists ever.

Guys like Mike Stern, and John Scofield humiliate those hair band pentatonic tapping hacks

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean and you've summed it up perfectly!

I don't play guitar but when I was younger I used to think Jimmy was the sh*t but as I got broader tastes I got a greater appreciation for other guitarists and styles like Page Hamilton, Vernon Reid, Chris Cheney, Ian Moss, Chet Atkins, Dr No etc

Hair guitarist were the most technical out of any genre. Forget about the lyrics etc and clothing these guys could seriously kick arse on the guitar.
