I agree that it is relevant but it is relevant to a point though.

So long as the game heeds the biggest lesson which is not expanding too much, too quickly then it will be fine.
The way the game is now any expansion is a struggle

but afl has been managing it fine despite less than stellar results

as long as we get to 20 teams the future will be fine (sadly I don’t think 20 teams includes png)

Mergers don’t work

you can’t merge clubs will long histories

super league was a fluke it’ll never happen again but the players and clubs are the biggest obstacle to the growth of the game
I get that, I was talking of when mergers were all the rage. You couldn't escape the scenarios in the media.

On the humorous side, I wouldn't have minded Cronulla merging with South's so I could say to all my Saints supporters mates "we've won more Premierships than you!" Haha

Well telling them they have won as many comps as Cronulla is probably even better

and as an ex season ticket holder of both clubs would be hilarious and devastating

Ah yes the amco cup lol

it’s actually a nice part of the world I enjoyed going to that ground
It needs work these days but it has a great atmosphere, just ask Cameron Smith! Haha.
I'm in story mode.
I actually have my blood and guts in that ground.
I ran the job, Supervisor, that put all the new electrical to get the Southern Stand built, and new lighting around the ground.
I'm talking from the street, around the environmental protected swamp, all the new mains cabling to all the switchboards, trenching throughout the ground etc. I was there for about 5 months. Ricky Stuart was the coach at the time. I had to deal with him every day about what I was doing so the players kept away. It didn't stop them, they really are just big boys. Stick, Flanno and myself shared a fair few beers during that year and a few after. I'm not best mates with them or anything, but we still have a happy laugh and greeting when we see each other.

The funniest story of that time was when Stick had got Blockers son into the Sharks U21's.. Blocker came down for a "coaching session", and I had the privilege to watch.
The players, Gallen, Ben Ross, Craig Stapelton Kimmorely etc were all in awe of the wisdom that was approaching them...
Blocker proceeded to go on "this kent this, this kent that... and that kent that plays with Manly, what's his name (Kite), yeah that kent, he's the best at it!" Etc etc.
Sticky couldn't bare it, he was pissing himself so came over to me and said "f**kibg Blocker.... hahhaah. And left as he couldn't stop his laughter.

Great story mate. Do you know much of the Sharks coaching and players now?

Stick is obviously back and coaching my team now. He seems an interesting character to say the least. Was probably my favourite player when I was growing up.

And to add onto that story.
The first two months I was basically there by myself doing the real hard yards, trenching.
I was in the middle of the main trench, outside the then gym, in boiling heat, obviously feeling it, I was 39 at the time.
A young 27 year old called Gallen walked over and these were the only words he ever said to me " so this is what you do eh.. I did that once and I'll never do it again" and walked off.
My thoughts "you f**kibg wanker"
I never forgave him until he held that trophy up.

Wonder why murdoch came crawling back to negotiating table if superleague clubs were killing it?! Could be the Sydney clubs & large tv audience they provide is what broadcasters seek?!
Since when did Murdoch come "crawling back"?

The ARL and its clubs were destitute. Murdoch was given a 50% stake in the game and has controlled it ruthlessly ever since.

I know none of them personally.
All I know is that the most important signing, for maybe forever, is Fitz as coach. Us supporters just have this natural feeling that he IS the team. And by what I can tell, the players feel that too.
Fitz was a ballboy for us when his dad was the coach.

A lot of people do not like Sticky, and by what I've been told, he was a real ratbag when the Raiders were winning their comps.
I an only say about my time with him, and he was great with me. Even after games there'd be a cordoned off are for the players in the Leagues Club, but I was allowed everytime. I used to pay out Flanno all the time, Stick loved it. Fkanno, when he was coach, gave me some pretty good scoops, especially after a few beers.
To this day some of the players and I will always have a beer and great time. Namely, Luke Covell.. he's the No.1.. Ben Ross, Ben Pommeroy... others Isaac deGois, Craig Stapleton. All top fellas. Oh and Kevvie Kingston if i see him.
I did call Greg Bird a cocksmoker one night, he didn't get my humour.

After the 97 grand final the arl had won

they should’ve just started new teams in Brisbane Canberra north qld and New Zealand and let the super league clubs die off

only the dogs and Penrith should’ve been allowed back
Is it possible for someone to be this stupid?

The ARL was getting just $10m per year from Packer between 1993 and 2000. They were stone motherless broke by the end of 1997 and needed Murdoch's money in 1998, hence the reason they gave him a 50% stake in the game.

Only a complete nutjob would think the ARL were in a position to fund all of its teams and add new ones in Brisbane, Townsville, Australia and Canberra. They sure didn't have the money to fund new teams in 1988 and 1995. By 1998 the ARL exhausted its funds on pointless legal action that backfired.

It wouldn’t surprise me about the ratbag thing. One town team with big name players is always a recipe for that type of stuff to go on. All I remember was that he was a ridiculously good player. Him and Loz and Bradley Clyde etc. Such great memories for me as a kid and a Raiders supporter. Haven’t had anything since.

Yeah your team really surprised me last year. Hynes as a halfback was a massive surprise. Interesting to see how they go this year.

Blocker was my favourite player

we were at a Balmain auction of jerseys and dad said which one do you want and I said roach

so we paid 5k for his origin jersey

His wife was hinting for me to give it back to him too lol no way

Stuart is rugby league royalty

I was gutted when him and Daley went to super league they were awesome

I knew south’s would smash them in the final

I went to watch it at a pub with a sharks fan and I was gloating before the game they had no chance

The Raiders of that period were phenomenal.
I have another story but I can't print it for libel reasons. It came from my best mates cousin, a first grader who they wanted at the club.
It surprised us lat year as well, but Fitzy buggered up in the semi against the Cowboys. He played injured players in the hope of a win and the two weeks off. He's admitted it, and I'm sure next time he will play the best fit team on the paddock.
I left the ground that night with no words, and knew we'd lose the next week against South's. I still went mind you, I wanted to experience the new stadium. It was unreal.
