Newtown, South Sydney and North Sydney were inner city clubs. All three were gone by 2000.

Does that mean we should cull the Roosters?

I think the Roosters should be handed the districts that belonged to Bears, Jets and Rabbitohs. Let the South Sydney Rabbitohs acquire the territory of the Dragons, Sharks and Steelers.

Adelaide Sharks and West Coast Dragons would be great teams. Less congestion and two big clubs representing an important part of Sydney.

Another exciting new idea from our resident ideas man. On repeat.

Sorry to be predictable, but as at 2023 I fail to see the point in bringing back clubs from the dead, in the middle of a city that already has half of the spots in the top tier.

It's not gonna grow the game as much as teams in places that are totally unrepresented at the top level.

Now, if some of the options pondered in the aftermath of the peace settlement came to fruition we could have had a result that preserved more of those clubs, more of those brands - but that time has passed.
Because your post was talking about bringing back a dead club in Perth

you know the one news ltd killed off

but not other clubs which you don’t rate

so Perth being killed off was a major mistakes but the bears et Al it was a good move

It only “failed” because things were against it in the first place. The Reds had to pay for opposing teams to come to WA, something other clubs didn’t have to do. In the long run wouldn’t be sustainable, so they were already being screwed from the start.
The failure of Super League was their death bell. They picked the wrong side and, as a result of the merger between SL and ARL, were culled to make way for a Melbourne team which was a far more attractive proposition going forward.
Hold on the cowboys had to do this too, yet they are still around and thriving

If it was a binary choice between axing Perth and axing a Sydney club in 1998, then yeah.. having the Perth team is strategically more valuable in the long term interest of growing the game.

But here's the thing.. there were chances to preserve some of those clubs - Giving the Bears a relocation grant & stand-alone license in Gosford to avoid the Northern Eagles rigmarole for a start, then looking at similar relocation packages (including grants) for other Sydney clubs, to de-clutter the map AND get a decent footprint for the competition.

Thing is, the ARL didn't fight to preserve more heritage Sydney clubs, or at least preserve more Sydney club BRANDS.. instead conceding the "need" to get down to 14 teams in the new NRL.

Yeah, it may have meant having the Perth Magpies or Adelaide Sharks... and the loss of brands like the Reds & Rams, but again - the ARL side of the table didn't fight for that & left it to a criteria.

Every club that got killed off had an argument for staying in

take off those super league tinted glasses

killing the reds was as bad as killing the bears

don’t be happy about Sydney clubs being killed off they had more fans than clubs like Perth

North Sydney had no future in Sydney. They were never going to be taken seriously as a regional NSW club in the most Sydney-centric competition on Earth. Arthurson was a Sea Eagles fan and had a history of putting Sydney first.
