Not so Super Rugby cant even draw crowds in NZ and that's their national sport. I can't see anyone caring about another sports team in some backwater town in NZ. Still, they would finish ahead of the Warriors.
its not really about crowds, its TV crowds, and a NRL game in NZ each week, which means more fans, more juniors, more interest, more money , NZ loves rugby league, its a no brainer

Three potentials

1. NRL use it as an excuse to once again do nothing in regards to growing the game for the next 5 years
2. Chances of a club going bust have increased meaning a possible relocation is more likely
3. Nrl realises it needs more revenue to save for a rainy day and gets serious about selling more content with a ninth game

On the laws of probability I would say #1 is most likely.

Never waste a crisis!!!

This is the ARLCs best ever chance to shape the NRL as they want it. I hope they have the nads to take it

Until WA declares independece (the Idependent Republic of New Holland?)

Not going to happen with vlandys in charge. He’s already said as much, though he couldn’t say how the nrl would bail them out if tv withdraws funding.m

Depending on the extent of the financial damage to the NRL, it will most likely delay any expansion a few more years.

Agreed. It's a golden opportunity to re-align Sydney’s club boundaries, look into business models of all clubs, and determine the best footprint moving ahead.

6 months ago, none of us could have anticipated this.. but it's potentially as game-changing as the "peace settlement" years (1998-2000) that formed the NRL as we know it.

Hopefully this time there's a whole lot more oversight & vision in the plan.

I love the enthusiasm but I reckon if a few clubs started to go under as a result of the current situation then PVL will try to take it back to the days of the old NSWRL. You'll get teams like Bears,Magpies, Steelers, Jets all come back in. PVL will probably spin it as "Suring up rugbah league's financial future"

If PVL does become *that* insular & suburban, I wouldn't be surprised if Queensland (with WA & possibly NZ support) stages a revolt against it.

Maybe even leading to the formation of their own league. It wouldn't be a "super" outcome for the sport. :(

I would say the chances of a relocation have actually gone down. Clubs will probably go bust but only in a financial sense. I would expect them to be rebooted much like Glasgow rangers were when the tax man came knocking.
It would look very cold hearted to relocate a club if the death rates are anywhere near what’s predicted.

I agree, though with Vladys now at the helm there was zero chance anyway. Any potential Expansion should be seen like any other investment by the NRL. Will an extra Brisbane team or two new teams and a ninth game bring in more revenue than it ultimately costs? If the answer is yes. Then it makes even more sense to do it sooner rather than later. I learnt a long time ago nrl isn’t about growing the game, it’s about growing its revenue.

It can't even do that right by the sounds of it....

Imo, it's going to be one of these two scenario's.

1. The Nrl will say they can't afford to expand and delays expansion for the foreseeable future or until the next broadcast deal in 2028.

2. After losing so much cash during this virus crisis, the Nrl has no other option but fight for more broadcast $ by adding Brisbane2.

Unfortunately, I forsee the first scenario. Hope I'm wrong.
