Can this thread actually be 'cleaned-up' without actually ruining its apearence? I mean can the last 40 or so posts be removed alltogether from view, without the 'deleted by authour' sign showing, and restored back to where the discussion was about the actual thread topic. I'm sure El Duque and Warlock wouldn't mind a bit.

Anyway, I recall as a kid watching Ali fight Zora Folley on free to air TV, one of the few chances I had to watch Ali live in those days. That was in 1967, his last fight before his 3 year layoff for refusing induction into the US Army

After - really. It was part of a statement he made to the media, either during the riots in LA that followed his beating, or after the trial of the cops who beat him. I can't recall exactly when, but he did say it on camera.

How much truth is there in the rumour that Joe Louis owed over $1MILLION dollars to the US taxation department well after his retirement? How did he pay the amount back? Surely he didn't earn that much during his ring days? And even if he did, he must have spent much of it on expenses and the kind, not abling him to have the money to pay back?
I also heard that Joe Louis 'lost-the-plot' during his later years, and was infact hospitalized in a 'nut-house' Is that true? How did he die? From what?
I'm just relaying information through what I've heard from a work buddy. He's full of shit most of the times though, so it's hard to believe what he says.
I've gained interest in Joe Louis like many here.

I don't know 2 much about Joe Louis's problems with the US tax department, but I do know he owed alot of money back to them at one stage. I'd be surprised if it was as much as 1mill though. That was big bucks back then.
It's news to me about his stay in a mental institution (if that is what you are claiming). I'm sure he had a drug problem later in his life also (well after he retired) which gave him health problems
I did read somewhere once that Joe died due to a fall he had at home and hit his head against a wall or sumthing. I know he was in a wheelchair towards the end of his days, which I'm guessing was due to a stroke he suffered earlier on.
But of course I say all that without any certainty because I can't back my claims up. Just (kinda) speculating. I'm sure there is a bigger Joe Louis fan than me here who will probably set the record straight. I wonder who that could be?
