Iro to resign?

Tony Iro says he will let the Warriors know about his future at the club "early this week" but is giving little away on his intentions.
Iro has two years to run on his contract as an assistant coach at New Zealand's NRL franchise but that has been thrown open with the appointment of Matthew Elliott as head coach following the premature sacking of Brian McClennan.
Asked if he could give an indication of which way he was leaning in terms of staying or going, Iro told Sunday News: "No, not really. It's a tough one, I've got to think a lot about my family."
Iro said he'd had "a couple of discussions" with Elliott who he described as "a good bloke".
"We didn't talk too much about details. They were general discussions about my role and where I'd be accountable."
Elliott will run two fulltime assistants which will mean a likely change for Iro who was McClennan's only full-time assistant.
That change will be adding to Iro's consideration. He said he had got over missing out on the head coaching role and now it was a matter of considering what was best for him. Iro, who is also the Kiwis assistant coach, wouldn't reveal any offshore options.
The Warriors start pre-season training tomorrow week and Dean Bell, the general manager of football operations, said he was "very confident" that Elliott's assistants would be in place by then.
"We are progressing fairly rapidly. We should be in a position to make a couple of announcements this week. With Matt's appointment it's been a busy period and things have had to move pretty quickly. But we are certainly pleased with the way the coaching structure is falling into place."
The Warriors have purposely given Iro space to make his decision, a mark of the respect the club holds for a man who has spent six years at Mt Smart, grooming the under-20s before stepping up to be an assistant at first grade to Ivan Cleary and then McClennan.
But the club now needs an answer and it seems Iro is ready to deliver that in the next day or so. The Warriors want to keep him.
"It's in Tony's hands really. We are hoping to hear his final decision about what his intentions are," Bell said.
"He knows that we want him to stay. Matt has said that and we all want him to stay. But he has to make a decision about what he thinks is best for his future and we'll respect that and take it from there."
John Ackland will remain in charge of the under-20s.
The search continues to bolster the first-grade squad. There are 28 players on contract at present and Bell indicated they'd like to run with up to 32.
"Hopefully we can make some announcements soon. Whether things happen before pre-season starts, I can't predict . . . We are looking to add to the squad as soon as we can, but these things take time."
Their search for experience has turned up 34-year-old former Wigan and Newcastle Knights centre George Carmont as a possibility.
A name that has been doing the rounds during the past week or so is that of Penrith's State of Origin centre Michael Jennings.
There are suggestions the Panthers might need to offload Jennings because of salary-cap issues - he is reportedly on a A$650,000 deal with a year left to run. He started at the Panthers in 2007, the same season Elliott took over there, so has an obvious connection.

Interested to see Ackland has been confirmed for the juniors. There were strong rumours he was going to be replaced.

I too would like to see him move on to help facilitate a bit of a club clean out. It has been said we will have two assistants this year, who would they be?

Newspaper articles last week said that Iro will advise the club on Monday (yesterday) as to what he was doing. If that was the case I'd assume that he said, " thanks but no thanks" as the club would have made it public ASAP. On the other hand they could be waiting for a slow news day as AB team was announced yesterday.

This... And they'll be waiting to get confirmation of the incoming assistant/assistants to play a 'good news' spin on it all.

Elliott close to revealing first assistant

Rikki Swannell, Newstalk ZB October 30, 2012, 3:10 pm

New Warriors coach Matt Elliott will have at least one of his assistants in place come the start of pre-season training on Monday.
Elliott says an announcement regarding his backroom staff is imminent.
But he says it remains to be seen whether Tony Iro will stay at the club, having filled in as head coach when Brian McClennan was sacked.
"Tony's situation is one that at this stage needs to be determined. We've had really honest, open conversations and I can't do anything else but admire the way he handled himself during the whole thing."
Elliott says he will also have three or four signings to confirm in the near future.

The fans deserve some positive news. A lot of the same stories seem to be dragging on and on.

Nice to know that they'll have at least one coach (assistant) in place prior to pre season training kick -off.

Although ... anybody want a bet that it'll be delayed (naming of Ass. coach)??

3 or 4 signings to be confirmed soon??? Carmont will be one so who'll be the other 2?

Good thread. If he does resign, then it the right thing to do. Tony is a man of integrity & pride, especially after what has happened. But he has a family to think of first. We will all find out soon.

Harrison effing Hansen seems to be another...so one more depth signing to come.

If he comes it wont be until 2014 - has one year to run on his contract and Wigan are already in the process of granting Hock a release to the Eels. They won't clean out their second row in one foul swoop.

Mole is reporting Iro to Roosters

Ironically... Our top notch media has caught wind of the mole as well:

Iro says no to Warriors assistant role

Rugby League circles are abuzz with the news that Tony Iro will quit the Warriors and is tipped to link with the Sydney Roosters.
The Warriors have been waiting on Iro's decision since he was overlooked for the top coaching job at new Zealand's NRL club.
The Warriors brought in experienced Australian coach Matthew Elliott to take over from Brian McClennan who was sacked with two games left in this year's sorry campaign.
Elliott was wanting Iro to stay on as one of his two assistant coaches but it seems the well-respected New Zealander is going to cross the Tasman.
Iro has been a long and loyal servant at the Warriors and leaves with two years left on his contract.
He groomed the Junior Warriors, coaching them from 2008 before being promoted to assist Ivan Cleary with the first-grade side.
He held that position when McClennan took over from Cleary.
Iro has also been assistant coach with the Kiwis since 2009.
Iro has strong links to the Roosters, having played there from 1994-96, making 60 first grade appearances.
Ironically Iro's move to the Roosters will see him replace Elliott who was an assistant to Brian Smith there this season.
With the Roosters' season ending in disaster, the club have replaced Smith with Trent Robinson has their head coach.
Iro's presence there will give the fashionable Sydney club a strong link back to young talent in New Zealand.

A good move for Iro.

Who will Elliot bring in now? I would have thought one x NZ (Iro) and one x Aussie but could now be 2 x Aussie.

No other coaches apart from Ackland are really in the mix at the Warriors - they need to establish a pathway.
