Can we please stop purporting the myth that players now are "Bigger and FASTER*

With size generally comes reduced speed. Thats simple physics.

Watching that Feleki whatever his name is streak 40 metres down the field for cronulla and getting run down by Cherry Evans just reminded me of that snail Feleti Talanoa.
We are used to it now.

Players slow as anything.
Two shute Shield players outpaced EVERY league player in that 100m dash three years back.

And Bunniesman is right,

You are extinct the moment the bloodline runs out.

Like in Rugby league. The game is over when the siren sounds but the play still goes until the next tackle.

Do you ever post anything that doesn't include a reference to the Shute Shield?

Are you on a bonus scheme with the ARU or something?

Go f**k up LU, and mention the Z-grade competition that we run 1000 times and we will give you half a tinnie, and a pre-smoked durrie.

First and foremost, out of 300 posts here I have mentioned the Shute Shield a grand total of 5 times.

Secondly and secondmost, are you not irked/interested/concerned/curious that an amateur club Rugby competition placed ALL their quickest runners faster than the NRL's FASTEST runners not involved in finals football that year? A list that included Barba,Hayne,Inglis,Morris?

Amongst the debate about players getting too big, concurrent with far reaching boastings of 'slick big, fast athletes' it is a charade, it has basically been proven a fallacy as no NRL player has cracked 11 seconds? The only chance of it being a true fail was the fact the Gold Coast wingers that year were unavailable.

Compare a standard NRL winger to Bryan Habana, or worse yet, the NRL twenty years ago and the speed black hole is enormous and far greater than the average NRL fan care to admit, or understand

I actually think there are many Hookers in the NRL in the Cam Smith mould?

Farah, Segeyaro,Jayden Hodges, Jake and Nate Friend, The Canberra dude,, Mcullough etc.

Not as good as Smith sure, but the same type of ballbreaker.

Faster, doesn't mean wingers run Olympic level speeds, faster means across the park. Some footrace a school fete event isn't evidence of diddly squat.

In a 15 man game you can afford to carry someone who is one-dimensional like a Habana.
A purely speedy winger in League would get exposed quickly, see Joven Clarke for more evidence.

Let's pit some of the League forwards against your beloved Union forwards in a foot race?

Your having a lend of yourself if you don't think that across the park, speed has increased from 20 years ago.

If you want to sit here and argue to my face that league props are quicker than Union props.
I wont argue with you.

If you want to dit here and say that the backline, the NRL 'Speed merchants' are quicker than they used to be,

Then, my friend you have a very big problem.

Is it a myth? Why else would league be heading the way it is, then?
I don't disagree but I think fast in terms of acceleration and actual speed might be different.

For example in his younger years Slater was untouchable...but only over a certain distance.

Fast over longer distance, longer legs...better levers, and probably more fast twitch fibers (though I'm not sure on that one).

The injection of more blacks (Fijian/African/Aboriginal) into the game has added the fast twitch natural pace, however it has all been off set by the power and bulking.

Heavier, more load to carry.

Akuila Utae was lightning then he go big.
Barba bulked up and lost his talent. That was well documented.
