Is Cleary a dud?

It is the Penrith way and why we will never be an elite side
Penrith sacked Ivan the first time and Hook last year for not being a premiership threat.

If we aren't winning Cleary will be gone well and truly before his 5 year contract. Fans might be happy to wait. But the club has shown it's perfectly happy sacking and paying out coaches.

The trouble is throwing contracts at coaches without considering all options. Gus lands Bennett and our board overrule him and distance him from the team. In this instance Gus was 100% spot on IMO. Bennett for 2 years would have been the best we could do outside of securing Bellamy. Who wasn't an option.

The club isnt happy to accept poor results. They just disagree on how to fix them.

Cleary will make for a fine hooker.

And you need one, the ones used this far are puss, no chance what so ever if you persist with what you have used.

NO f**king hope if you keep picking the dud hookers you have selected this far.

None, Zero, Zip, Nudda, no chance in hell.

Gus knows what the team needs at each stage of the sides development.

When he first came in he knew the next few years were going to be a difficult period for the team.

Cleary had experience and he is a nice bloke who is loved by the players to manage this period.

We were then starting to develop young NRL players in 2014-15 who needed to be toughened up and trained harder than what they were under Cleary.

Griffin was appointed to instill toughness into the players.

It got to a point where the team was ready to win a premiership and Gus knew Griffin couldn't deliver that.

He went for a proven performer in Bennett and got over ruled by the board.

Interesting to see how the next couple of years go now.

Hiring coaches without so much as an interview when it hasn't worked in the past is accepting poor results. Why not do something different if you want to get a different result

It will be hard to push for the 8 given the squad and coach. Hopefully the board see the light and we don't waste the likes of Blore etc as we have with Blake and co

And the board overruled him because he made a captain's call and went for Griffin?

I don't understand why he would stay on at Penrith if they aren't taking his advice.

I heard a rumour in the off season (allegedly coming from inside the club & right about the time we announced Ivan was returning) that Gus was leaving to be coaching director at the Dragons with Barrett as their coach.

Regardless of on field performance?

At this stage I don't think that will be an issue. (as such) Panthers will come good. I can recall the wringing of hands and the like from media around Cronk and Roosters early last year.

A number of players had surgery in the off season DWZ, Maloney, Cleary (just off the top of my head) Edwards comming back after a long term injury. That's your spine there.

It is round 3 going into round 4. It's early season.

But hey that's my mindset. I'm quite happy to see Cleary back at Penrith. Call me optimistic. I think we all (me included) expected amazing things straight away from Cleary comming back, without adding in the above factors. Billy's injury and the sex tape scandal.

One thing I do know is that club can't afford to keep on sacking coaches. So we are with Cleary for 5 years.

Perhaps it's because I have some pretty heavy issues going on in my life, illness, family estrangement and the like. With footy a little side line on the edge of my life. To it's now not life and death but a mere snippet to enjoy (if possible) when possible.

As an outsider looking in, you club is going through some teething problems. It was announced in the pre-season that Ivan was moving Nathan to play on the left hand side, and Maloney was being moved to the right. That would create changes in both the structures of the team for attack and defence.

Maloney, who has a reputation for many missed tackles, is now defending on the right, which means he is doing more defence than previously. This means he has less gas in the tank for when the team has the ball. With Nathan over on the left, he is carrying a lighter defensive load, and hence should be fresher in attack.

Thing is Maloney has shown based on their respective careers to date, that he is more creative than Nathan. As such it is putting more pressure on Nathan, as he is now expected to be more creative with the ball as he should be less fatigued, but in the 3 rounds so far he hasn't been. Maloney looks like he is more fatigued as a result of the higher defensive workload, so has been a bit more mistake prone.

Now it may come good, as it can take time to adapt (especially for Maloney who has played most of his first grade career on the left side) for these types of changes. The issue might be though, if after a few more weeks and if things haven't improved, whether to revert them or not.

Everyone needs to chill out, this is how our team has always been.

All they need is one good performance, things will click and we’ll go on a big run of wins.

Cleary is a Gun, he’ll rise to the top.

Thanks for your insight. You make some really good points.

I agree, it’s too early to write off the team, the coach and the season!!!!

What do you see as being their issue? You say they are seriously “Shyte” but why?

I’ve never heard anyone refer to either of them as being “Shyte” so I’d like to know what you see, that everyone else doesn’t. Including Fittler and Andrew Johns.
