Opinion Is Ricky Stuart the most overrated coach ever?

I've already given you something Sam Williams definitively does better than Aiden Sezer.. he sets up more tries, and more linebreaks. If you've bought Sezer for his defense prepare to be let down - he's ok at best. That's probably being a little generous.

Pretty much the only thing he brings is his kicking game. But you're losing (the difference in assists) something at the same time - and you've paid a good whack under the cap for what isn't a huge gain (a bigger gain for your club specifically than perhaps some others because of the kicking game, but still not a huge net gain) and also failed to address the areas that needed it more; centre - or fullback if Wighton is considered to move back there but I doubt it - and an extra high quality middle forward.

Hes only on about 500k a bargin for a halfback. He will be the lowest paid player in the spine by kickoff rd 1 imo

I think that says more about the quality of the players around the players than it does the quality of the play makers themselves. Again, Sezer is 24 years old, his team at the Titooons in the last 24 months has been disgusting. Before that period he was a 22 year old still learning his craft. You can go and find 6-10 games this year from the Titans where if not for Aiden Sezer they get blown out by 20+.

I've watched Sam Williams and Aiden Sezer play make and the eye test clearly tells you which one is the better ball player. And it's definitely not the guy who will be plying his trade for the Mounties in NSW Cup this year.

We're in a very special place of Stuart-haterism when we have people seriously LOLz'ing at Stuart for buying Aiden Sezer to replace Sam Williams as halfback. Cherish these moments, LUers. It's rare that people's dislike for an individual reach this level.

haha yeah, that's the best part!
Jaseg pretending like paying a halfback 500k in a 6.8 mil salary cap is some kind of egregious overs.

It's only 13% of our over all cap!

By the time his deal expires, the cap could be as high as 8-9mil

Hodgson is about to sign an extension.
Given his level of play, age etc, id say his new deal will include a hefty pay rise

Actually I never said it was overs - I said it was a significant amount.. and it is. That sort of money is still good money you could throw into a top notch player in a position you need to fix more immediately. Idris, Mead & Gordon (and this year Roberts, Don & Hoffman)... yep, Sezer didn't have anyone to put through... particularly when compared to that star studded uber successful Raiders backline, right? Oh...

Williams had the exact same excuse RE age/experience, fyi - already pointed that out in an earlier post, but I guess rationality is a little beyond you at this point.

Stuart is still halfback cancer though.. every one he's worked with ends up worse off. Good luck with that (and hoping/praying you get the same luck with injuries as 2015). Amusingly, I don't even dislike the guy - I just don't think he's a particularly good coach. Looks like he's improved a bit, but from a pretty low base.

At least we're getting to heart of this thing. You don't like Ricky Stuart as a coach. Good for you, you're hardly robinson crusoe there. Hell half the Raiders fans including me arent even that high on him as a coach, but you're letting your views of him cloud your judgement of Williams and Sezer.

Ill say it again, we're in a very special place of Stuart-haterism when we have people seriously LOLz'ing at Stuart for buying Aiden Sezer to replace Sam Williams as a halfback.

Well conversely I think you're letting your fan bias cloud your judgement of the two. And I'm not relying on the rather subjective 'eye test'.

It's not even the signing of Sezer in isolation I have an issue with - it's the context, that he did so while failing to address real problems within the squad.

I dont think the eye test between Sezer and Williams is all that subjective tbh  It's absolutely stunning to me you actually think Williams is on the same level as him.

The real issue within the sqaud is our defense, which as outlined is addressed is significant ways by better halfback play
We definitely need another middle forward but Tamou decided to stay in Townville, JHW knocked back huge dollars to stay at the roosters, so Stuart can only do what he can do, he cant pull a gun out and force a stud front rower to sign for us.
He's already addressed that problem for 2017, if reports are to be believed Junior Paulo will anchor a front row with Shannon Boyd and Paul Vaughan in 2017. More than happy with that, we dont need 4 front liners with the game moving to a 6 interchange game

He also signed BJ Leilua to play centre. So he's actually addressed the problems you see with the squad, just not with players you like. But then you think Williams is as good as Sezer, so im not sure you're the best judge of talent tbh

Junior Paulo could be a decent one for sure... but it's hardly like those guys you mentioned were the only middle forwards going around - I'll whack a list of a few guys who were off contract for 2016 and could have made a difference here;

Josh McGuire
Sam Thaiday
Sam Kasiano
Paul Gallen
Nate Myles
Martin Taupau
Jordan McLean
Ben Matulino
Trent Merrin
Mike Cooper
Leeson Ah Mau
Jared Waerea-Hargreaves

He can't land one of those? As for BJ... lol. Just... lol. He signed him during last year, and he wasn't good. Re-signing him for 2016+ doesn't magically make him better. 13 penalties or errors in less than 6 full games, compounded by gaping defensive issues and considerably less of the attacking impact he was expected to make (and he's always had feet for hands). He's like a bad version of Konrad Hurrell. Wait.. I feel like I need to put that in context also for a Raiders fan - Hurrell is overall decent, sometimes really good, but not nearly as good as Croker makes him look every time he plays the Raiders. Leilua is a worse version of that.. without a bunny to exploit one or two times a year. Here's a list of centres Ricky could've gone for at various points instead of Leilua..

Shaun Kenny-Dowall
Tim Simona
Dane Gagai
Konrad Hurrell
Dylan Walker
Tim Lafai
James Roberts
Jordan Kahu

Yeah. Speaks for itself.

This guy claims we need a good defensive centre and then names Dane Gagai as someone we could should have chased
Lololololol

Halfback is just about the most important position on the field....that or hooker. Stuart clearly thought he could have got tamou to break contract hence why he was dumping players from the front row stocks. That said aiden sezer is a solid upgrade at half and pretty cheap too. Especially as the cap is likely to rise.

So yeah i think Shillington should have maybe be kept on for a year or something. That said he was playing like an idiot at the end of last year. If vaughan goes down with an injury then stuart can be blamed for the front row situation.

Also i think we are ok for outside backs really. Ferguson was a big loss but croker, lee, rapana etc are all solid first graders. Id take an upgrade at halfback over an upgrade at centre everyday of the week. Its not like Ferguson really was taking us places and ferguson is better than all those centres listed imo
