Cleary would certainly be a step in the right direction .
However rather than make the same mistake as we did with Price ,and to our eternal regret MacGregor , I would be signing him to a short term contract , with a option , in the Clubs favour , for an extension .

Quite simply he performs , or his contract is not renewed .
Give him free rein ( no pun intended ) who he wants to keep , both player and coaching staff .

In saying which players he wishes to keep he is naturally restricted by our Clubs current
financial woes .
That being the case , he coaching abilities alone should bring the best out of the players , regardless of who they are .

Good coaches , will do just that .
He is not a Bennett , Hasler or Bellamy , nor does he have the same quality players to work with , but with the right support from all concerned at the Dragons , he could very well be just the person to drag us out of our current sorry situation , and bring some happiness to the long suffering supporters .

Good coaches attract and get the best out of good players.

And looking at mere win/loss percentages is a tad simplistic
  • Agree 100% have a look at bellyake in Melbourne great coach makes greater player. He is the best coach by a long way

CLEARY NOT HEADED TO THE DRAGONS

Speculation around Paul McGregor’s future as St George Illawarra coach is rife as the club struggles to find form on the park.

Out-of-work Ivan Cleary denied to NRL Tonight he had been approached to replace McGregor at the Dragons, but wouldn’t deny his interest.

“It’s news to me,” Cleary said.

“I guess I’ve been linked to plenty of jobs this year, there’s only so many jobs.

“I’ve made it known that I’m keen to get back into the coaching ranks, but there’s only so many jobs.

“People start making assumptions, I feel sorry for all the coaches that get put in a position.

“I’m keen to get back in but it’s got to be the right position and we’ll have to see what comes up.”

Cleary was shown the door as Penrith coach in a shock axing at the end of 2015.

Cleary took two clubs which were in a mess and turned them into premiership contenders quite quickly. I think it took 2 years for the Warriors and his first year at Penrith. He was merciless in getting rid of still good but severely overpaid players such a Jennings and Lewis. I think also Civonocevia and Coote. This is the kind of thing the Dragons need. Even if he is a poor coach it's important to get someone in from outside who is willing to get rid of the dead wood. Cleary fits the bill. I would also be in favor of the club getting Brian Smith in if Cleary is unavailable.

Wow, if that is acting, that is a brilliant performance, Mary has absolute zero respect from Widdop.

I doubt that. No other coach would be incompetent and stupid enough to not only not drop Widdop by now but make him captain. Well I guess its reached the point where Widdop only has one season left and he will never see anything like the money he is on now as a RL player again so he doesn't really care if he paid out one year early.

somehow I dont really believe this is all true
After thinking it over since yesterday, I agree. It's a bit like the players continually linked to the Dragons -easy to believe when they are struggling in key positions. The timing is perfect to declare that a new coach is on the horizon & the 'experts' love to deliver their 'scoops' with authority to add to the credibility.

A few people have challenged some of these guys on the Cleary story & they are stubborn, good luck to them, but their arrogance is annoying - never admit they're wrong & treat people who challenge their scoops as less informed or not as intelligent. They generally love to pump up their tyres when they're right (after having a few different shots at a story) but don't explain it that way or offer up convenient excuses to cover themselves. They don't realise people would respect them if they just admitted they got it wrong.

Yes, it's social media & an opportunity to express opinions, but remember people aren't wrong if they disagree with yours.

Back on topic, the frustration from the team's poor paying style has made people desperate for change across multiple levels, but we shouldn't falsely get our hopes up that something will happen quickly. If McGregor is replaced, it won'r happen until after the club conducts a review. So if you're checking in everyday looking for news on a replacement coach, spend it on something else until at least a few months.

Once again we're linked to someone, albeit this time a coach. Like most here, I would be over the moon to see a coach of Ivan Cleary's standing, coach our club.
But, as we've all seen and heard before; "Hiku firmly in Dragon's sights"; "Dragons favourite to get Coote's signature"; "James Roberts' management impressed with Dragon's"; Keary to sign with Dragons"; "Dragons make $2.4 Million multi year offer to Norman". And now it's, "Ivan Cleary to coach St George in 2017 and beyond". Let's not get too carried away with this one, because, if wrong, I think the tears will flow thicker and faster than they did when the others proved to be pipe dreams and absolute shite.
Remember, our club has become toxic to prospective players, and quite possibly to prospective coaches. Its not just Mary that has caused players to steer clear of us like the plague. It's also the dickheads running the joint. Doust, the Board and the so-called Recruitment and Retention team, Millward and Harron (who have done a spectacular job in the last 2 years). These incompetents have been responsible for our financial blow out, for appointing 2 head coaches with no experience and nothing to bring to the team, allowing Brett Morris and Trent Merrin to leave the club, for not recognising the huge potential Jack Bird and Jackson Hastings have and allowing them to ply their trade elsewhere. And it's on the cards we will lose Luciano Leilua due to their mismanagement. Of course, like I mentioned above, recruitment has been appalling. We haven't signed a top tier player for quite sometime and are content to pay overs for players other teams don't want.
The club is a basket case, and to be perfectly honest, if I was Ivan Cleary, I'd rather be unemployed than get involved with the RedV.
It pains me to say it, but I see no light at the end of the tunnel until Doust and the Board are removed, and the members are able to vote for the Board and the CEO is made accountable.
God, and hopefully, Ivan Cleary, Save Our Saints!

Social media have gone into a frenzy about the "Cleary to Dragons" rumour...everyone's been conned by the club who have leaked this red herring in the hope that it will take the heat out of the supporters push for McGregor and Doust to be sacked....its not going to happen, however their strategy has worked a treat. Many comments even now commending McGregor for standing aside and having the clubs best interests at heart...LOL

Let us be clear about several FACTS:

1. Paul McGregor has not offered to step aside for another coach and be his assistant.

2. A Board that has even the smallest level of competency and intelligence would never create a structure proposed by no. 1

3. Any new incoming coach with an ounce of intelligence would not want or accept no.1.

No business leader in the real world would ever go for the above either.

That rumor and post was done by either McGregor or his mum to get people to post that maybe McGregor is a good guy.

We are not fooled. Goodby Mr McGregor you are not worthy of this great club.

I will add that if Doust and the Board do happen to find a village idiot willing to be McGregor's cushion then they too should immediately resign as incompetent bumbling fools. Oh hang on, Doust and the board are already showing these attributes.

Good post but Kogarah has no future. Time to do as Souffs and the Bullgrubs have done. ANZ and Wollongong. Kogarah based supporters will have to go through the agony of a 20km commute. Perhaps the club would be willing to put on buses from the club to ANZ and back. The money it would make from the move would easily cover free shuttle buses.
