Sharks to investigate training fight

16 December 2005

Cronulla chairman Barry Pierce and his board will investigate a fight between two Sharks players at Thursday's training session.

Forward Hutch Maiava was stood down indefinitely by the club after an altercation with lower grade player Jacob Selmes which resulted in Selmes requiring 20 stitches to his face.

Sharks coach Stuart Raper will front the media on Friday morning to explain how the two came to blows at a weights session.

"Hutch reacted physically, Jacob's had a few stitches," club spokesman Rob Willis said.

"They're saying 20 (stitches), I'm not sure it's that many but he had some stitches in his face.

New Zealander Maiava, a 120kg giant, made 24 first-grade appearances for the Sharks this year while Selmes is yet to play first-grade but captained Cronulla's Jersey Flegg side in its finals campaign this season.

In a statement, Sharks coach Stuart Raper, who was not present at the weights session, said he was surprised by the incident.

"I'm obviously very disappointed, as well as very surprised with what happened," he said.

The statement said club chairman Barry Pierce and his board would investigate the matter further.

"From the information we have received so far it appears Hutch was the aggressor, which is the reason why he has been stood down pending further investigation."

Willis said he did not know what had caused the altercation.

He said players were aware of tensions in Cronulla following last weekend's racially-motivated violence, but he doubted the incident had stemmed from that.

Raper was on Thursday night planning to speak with club chief executive Steve Rogers, who is holidaying in Italy and was unaware of the incident when contacted by AAP.

An NRL spokesman said it would remain a club matter if the incident took place at a private training session.

f*ck me.

and i'm a big fan of selmes. also of hutch. but given the choice, i'd go for selmes for sure
if hutch stays i wonder what selmes thinks of it

That my friend is the $64 question. The other consideration as well is IF it was an unprovoked attack, Mt Selmes could quite easily lift himself in the pecking order of Prop Forwards within the club contributing to evidence to lead to Mr Maiva's release.

In otherwords, it would have been less complicated if both players were in different positions on the field.

I still maintain though, that hopefully the apology will be accepted and that all can proceed towards season 2006.

Sharks reprieve for brawler
December 16, 2005

SHARKS coach Stuart Raper said today that prop Hutch Maiava will stay with the club despite punching a teammate at training yesterday.

Young forward Jacob Selmes required 12 stitches after being punched by Maiava during an altercation in a weights session at pre-season training.

Maiava has been suspended from training while the board considers his punishment and he is unlikely to train again this year.

Raper said Maiava has been very remorseful for his actions and has apologised to Selmes.

The Sharks coach said there would be no issue with Maiva playing with the Sharks in 2006.

'...required 12 stitches...' Well, let's not let the truth ruin a good headline, lads.

'...unlikely to train again this year...' Well, as Austin would say..."Whoopdee Doo, Basil!"

he needs the training, if anything his punishment should be to train harder his fitness is pretty poor.

Not really Sharksman.

Hutch not being at training gives the other props a chance to over take him with fitness, strength etc.

That's a fine statement - but only if we are happy planning on having him as an orange runner for the boys. (Ie if we suspend him without pay)
Sitting him on the sideline does nothing for him, or the team.
He needs to get fit - punish him through fitness. 1000 suicides and 1000 push ups if you ask me.

When he comes back he will get flogged to "catch up". Bird got murdered through drills at shark park after he did that knee. Hutch will get the same stuff once he returns to the boys.

Keep him away from the boys, make him think about what he has done and how he has now put a question mark on his number #14 jumper for a while. Then when he comes back he'll get flogged to regain his spot.

I'd be more worried about Selmes and if he is able to work out or not.

Oh Hutch. What have you done to yourself.

Also, I know the angle isn't that good but Albert looks a lot more solid then I can remember. I always remembered him as a weedy scrawny little bloke.

i think hutch should not be an outcast for this and i think his game will suffer. the boys went to blows its good, create a rivalry for the bench prop postition, make them push each other and make sure their form is right otherwise they get the cut.

I must say to the dragons fans how good does lance look in blue hahahaha.

f**king Hell, I think everyone has missed the point here.........I'm just going to be very VERY careful not to do anything that may make hutchie " just click" in the auditorium after match presentations ! :)

I just hope that some bastard in a black white and blue jersey can "just click" maybe for 26 rounds or whatever it takes to win a competiton.

Then in the after game celebrations I'd let em gofor it in the weights room with "trent"

(Sheeezzz couldn't he change his name chopper, or Cassius or something like the other clubs have......... trent ... crikey it just smacks of fear .)

Look so what if they had a stink. Fair dinkum it is getting to the stage where a rugby league player is going to get drawn and quartered for breaking wind in a public place. Why should the world want to know about it, and why should it be such a great big deal.

As Bob Dylan once put it ... "even the president of the Unites States sometimes has to stand naked."

Cheers

"just clicked" huh?

Nothing like some off season rage. Or mental illness.

What is it with Bulldogs forwards coming to the Sharks?

TBH NOTHING about this moves me in any way.

Hutch goes, Hutch stays que sera sera - he's over rated anyway and always provides a lovely hole in the ruck for someone to run through.

Selmes goes, Selmes stays que sera sera - He's non rated as a first grader anyway and is just another kid with potential.

I'd prefer Raper went.

I blame him anyway/

I blame him for this, the riots in Cronulla, Chernobyl, cot deaths, boy scouts getting hives and anything else that comes to mind.
