The Mole will be happy. Coach Tomsula is speaking about him.

San Francisco 49ers running back Jarryd Hayne has had some shining moments during the preseason, but a report that he has been assured a roster spot may be premature.
A tweet that circulated Tuesday morning claimed that Hayne had told family and friends he had already made the 49ers 53-man roster. 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula refuted that report during an appearance on KNBR 680-AM in San Francisco.
“I don’t know what the rules are in the media in Australia, but you might want to fact check,” Tomsula said, per Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury-News. “The 53 is not set.”
Hayne has been impressive, particularly as a punt returner. Hayne didn't get as many opportunities in that area during the 49ers' last preseason game, but Tomsula said he is satisfied with what Hayne has shown there.
"First of all, to separate Jarryd from the total picture, I'm pretty confident in Jarryd's ability to field the ball," Tomsula said, per NinersNation.com. "I've see him field, I've watched a ton of tape on this guy fielding a rugby ball. I've seen him field here at practice. I've seen him field in game situations. So, I feel very good about his abilities to field. I feel very good about his abilities to perform with a ball in his hands on special teams. The tackling part of it and the coverage parts of it, seen a lot of improvement there. I mean the guy will fly down the field in those areas, so all of those things we've seen, I've seen what I need to see. I think it's been a great evaluation on him."

I dont think you've seen half of what he can do .... if all your punters broke their legs you could hand him the ball and you'd be sweet. Give him afew kicks at goal too.

Yep. Just wait for some merkin intercept a 49ers ball and Hayne runs him down and bundles him in to touch.

I watched "NFL Live" last night on ESPN. I'm actually beginning to think that these NFL merkins have an inflated opinion of their players football abilities.

Happy to be proven wrong.

not that bundling him into touch would be better than plain old tackling him in NFL - but hell yeah, smash him jarryd!!

I'd still love to see a chip n chase one day ;-)

Someone should tell Tomsula that people like the Mole just make shit up all the time.

Who doesn't? Have you listened to the NRL360 guys? According to them every NRL player will make a 53 man squad.

The games are different. If you lose the ball in league anywhere in your own 30, you are not guaranteed to be scored against. In the NFL if you give the ball up anywhere in the 30 you have pretty much guaranteed that you will be scored against as even if you go 3 and out they will just kick a field goal.

That is the reason when Hayne took that over the shoulder catch that they all freaked because for them it was impressive but their problem was, what if he dropped it and turned it over? Equally what if he dropped it and they had to take it out of their own end on the 1 yard line because he dropped it and they smashed him 1 yard out? You risk a safety, or just generally go 3 and out and have to punt it from within your own 10. The opposition then just get great field position again.

I'm not saying they (NFL players) are the best athletes either by the way, Hayne has shown we have players with the physical attributes to compete with them but to learn a new game in the time he has and do a pretty solid job is the remarkable part and how often does that happen that someone was in the highest level of one sport and transfers that to the highest level of another sport?

WTF is a cornerback ?

Defends the back field essentially. Effectively the last line of defence. Generally they are the ones that are the ones defending the long throws into the end zone against the wide receivers.

The ONE THING that irritates me more than anything else is the way the Yanks talk about 'rugby'. There is a difference between Rugby and Rugby League. Hopefully they send their scouts to poach rugby talent, and leave the league guys alone.

What other positions do they have ?

Defence in the NFL (just as it is in League) is about being able to read the play and react to what the offence is doing. I don't think Jarryd would have the insticts just yet to be able to do that in those positions. I do think that if given some time he could have become a very good safety in the NFL. The position is a lot like a fullback defensively in the NRL, but you need to be very good at reading the play and knowing what the QB is going to do.

I want to know what a Fullback actually does...They seem to be an attacking player, who doesn't get the ball...

Can someone elaborate?

A fullback is used on offence, mostly as a blocker. A lot of the time he will lead the way for the running back to get through a hole in the defensive line. They are usually bigger than a running back, and are sometimes given the ball in very short yardage situations (like say you need 1 or 2 yards to get the first down or a touchdown) to power through the defence. They are often used as a receiver also.

The 49ers have one of the better fullbacks in the game in Bruce Miller. It was him that opened up that massive hole for Hayne to run through on his second touch in the first preseason game.

You mean when Jarryd ran through the crease ?

Well one dream has come true. He's in the Madden game.

NFL: The team from Hard Count break down how Jarryd Hayne fared which Aussies starred in Week 3 of the NFL preseason, who came out on top in the Baltimore brawl and the weeks biggest plays.

THE kid who grew up playing Madden will now feature on it.

EA Sports has revealed it will include Jarryd Hayne in Madden ’16 as the Australian running back closes in on a spot on the San Francisco 49ers’ 53-man roster.
Hayne was unveiled today as the featured player in the Madden Ultimate Team Mystery Box after impassioned pleas from fans on social media to include him in the game.
EA Sports supplied foxsports.com.au with the following Hayne ratings and stats:
- 95 Acceleration: he gets up to speed incredibly fast, he’s on par with the elite running backs in the NFL in this category
- 93 Carry: he’s really good at hanging onto the football, all that rugby league training has taught him how to protect the ball and not fumble!

- 90 Juke Move: he’s able to cut on a dime and shake defenders who are about to tackle him, a tough guy to bring down in the open field.

“EA SPORTS is excited to welcome Jarryd Hayne to the NFL,” an EA Sports spokesperson said. “We’re celebrating the Aussie phenom, and self-professed Madden NFL fan, with a special Madden Ultimate Team item that’s available in-game right now.
“Hayne was revealed today as the featured player in the Madden Ultimate Team Mystery Box, so some lucky fans were able to add him to their team.
“Fans who want to get Hayne on their squad should keep an eye out for fans looking to trade him for another player, or check out the auction house to see if he’s available there.”

Upon announcing his departure from the Parramatta Eels last year, Hayne told reporters he had fallen in love with the NFL after long hours spent playing Madden.

His former housemate, Ben Smith, confirmed as much. In an interview with The Australian last October, Smith said Hayne used to dress up as a Reggie Bush - now his 49ers teammate - before taking on all-comers at Madden.
“Every now and then a few of the boys would come over to play Madden on the PlayStation and we would have a bit of a tournament,” Smith said.
“The lounge area would be downstairs and Haynesy would live upstairs. We would be downstairs getting ready to play and Haynesy would walk downstairs in a Reggie Bush playing jersey and a helmet.

“He used to play the whole game dressed like that. Whenever he scored a touchdown, he would do a little 10-metre dash into the courtyard or run around the kitchen table. Or he would get up and pretend he was doing a post-touchdown celebration.

“He was that pumped. He loved it that much. When he would get angry, no word of a lie, he would sit in the same spot and bump the wall if he made a mistake.
“When we left, there was a little indentation in the wall. We had to patch it up.”
Another former teammate, Justin Horo, is credited with introducing Hayne to American football.
“Apart from playing Madden he had fairly little knowledge concerning the game,” Horo said last week.
“A couple of times I tried to speak to him or her at night time and he was Simply exhausted. He’d trained from nine to three … and he’d spend four or 5 hours in the playbook.
“He’s done his job and is reaping the rewards.”
