If anything Hayne was underrated. Constantly getting shafted by media so they could talk up numpties like Inglis and Poogan.

Totally agree - I reckon he was one of the most under rated players in the game. Seriously.

I say that because I saw him play virtually every game and only then do you see some of the things he did week in week out - little things that don't even make it to highlights packages because they did not lead to a try. All those you tube clips of him show the tries and setting up tries - not the amazing tackles, long distance field goals, line breaks etc.

He stopped so many tries single handedly it s not funny.

Meanwhile, because he is so gifted in attack, the assumption from the ill-informed is 'Hayne is badly positioned in defence'. They pretty much had to trot out that line, or accept that he was the best player in the game....

And yet Inglis can plod it up week in and week out, genuinely have bad positioning in defence and not handle the ball for a good 20 minutes yet he's the best player in the game hands down according to some. If only Hayne had played for QLD and a slightly more successful team he'd be held in much higher regard across the wider League community.

It may be just me but I keep thinking Jarryd is making a lot of those players over there look like absolute schmucks.

"Wow we have never seen a player fend like that before" Really? No-one thought of doing that? Ha.

You guys do realise that this is a totally different sport, right?

Two quick things:

1) Short periods of focus. All Hayne has to do is focus for a minute or two at a time, then he gets a short rest (between snaps) or a longer rest (by sitting on the bench). This was one of his biggest shortcomings in league - sometimes he just didn't put in;

2) He's only just starting out...meaning, he's going to be extremely focused and on the ball. Give him a year, or two, or three and see if he's still the same.

This is just a continuation of the massive circlejerk that went on previously.

Then again, with the above points in mind, perhaps Hayne is actually suited to a short focus, stop-start game like NFL rather than a rolling, long focus game like the NRL?

Lastly...you guys don't understand what overrated means, do you? It doesn't mean not good. It doesn't even mean not great. It means the rating someone is given (no matter what level that is) is higher than they deserve.

Hayne can be a ridiculously ltalented athlete (which he is) and still be overrated (which eh is).

All I know is that the Parra club and the sport of rugby league are both poorer without The Plane in it.

I'm only a novice to the game but I was thinking the same thing.

He's going better than could be imagined.

However, those comments about NFL players not knowing how to fend are way off the mark. RB do it all the time when breaking to the outside. When running inside they have to protect the ball, as there are a million blokes trying to strip it. You don't often see it from punt returners (nor do you see a punt returner try to run over the defense....coz your average punt returner is about 30-40 pounds lighter than Hayne).

Did they call it a fend ?

They generally refer to a fend as a stiff arm.

Apparently the thing that has amazed a lot of people over there is when he did the over-the-shoulder catch running backwards.
Players just don't do that over there. Any fullback in the NRL would be able to do it (not just fullbacks actually), but they are just amazed at it.

My brother, who lives in California mentioned that that catch was being compared to Willie Mays, who is one of the greatest baseball players of all time. His trademark was the running back, over-the-shoulder catch.

Well, you know, it's okay to be wrong about something. And you are. Jarryd Hayne, for years, has been a ridiculously talented athlete ................. and underrated. His whole career he's been underrated. With people saying he has a bad attitude and that he's lazy and that he drifts in and out of games and, and, and ..... All bullshit. All myth. The guy is, was, and always will be a champion. An underrated one.

He was over rated in the sense that we expected him to do everything. We are a better team without him cause players like Norman are taking more responsibility and we are getting more out of guys like Semi who are getting involved more often .... Before it was almost like guys where afraid not too give it to HAYNE on strike plays. With the salary cap and what he would cost compared too another fullback ( not foran who plays in the halves a more important position ) he was far too costly. Just like Inglis is. Gordon is better value. As good - NO. He can be effective thou in different ways and guys need to remember a try like Faraimo's bardge over gets you the same amount of points as some Hayne Majic -Maybe not as pretty to watch but just as effective on the scoreboard.
If HAYNE cost no more than 650k id have him every day of the week in my top 25.. But if he was counting for 1.2 mill against the cap and i know i can pick up an outstanding fullback for 500-600k id follow that route. He was a star and our star, But blame the NRL for there SALARY CAP.
So what do use want A top 4 squad who can win us a title. Or a team battling at the bottom with some Hayne highlights at the end of the season and the bragging right to guys at the pub - Yeah but we have the best player in the comp : P

Americans are very insular with lot of what they do - if you have a look at the clip of the Willy Mays catch, its not anything special compared to a shit load of cricket grabs yet the seppos are still wanking over it.

Also, with Hayne - the merkins got a monster f**king boot on him as well, the f**ker would probably make it as a punter too.
