We can't just run with the squad we already have. We need to spend a minimum amount and Hayne's departure would have put us under that.

So if we don't find good money replacements then the alternative is to extend contracts we already have and front load into this year.

But the question is: do we have enough players we already want to extend, and will those players end up costing enough to get us above the minimum?

What's the possibility we make a mistake with this and extend someone we probably shouldn't?

Alternatively, who should we be looking to extend in the first place. Poo thinks Hoppa, but who else?

Outside of Hopoate there isn't one player in Top 25 players who is off contract at the end of 2015 that I would re-sign. We are better off spending the money on new players. We will need to come up with a different style and play without The Plane, pretty sure the current players, who are use to The Plane saving their ar$e are not the answer.

I think it's unlikely that he will be granted permission to play by the NRL, let alone be allowed to stay in the country by the Department of Immigration, but Russell Packer is probably someone we should be looking at. If Wayne Bennett's sees something in him then surely he is worth a shot.

Do you think anyone would have the amount of cap room spare to cover the salary Hayne would be asking if he returned? We'd be in no worse position than any other club.

It will come down to the circumstances at the time if it actually happens, there will be some clubs that will be in a position to sign him. Who knows, we could be one of them.

I have a question (and it is from genuine curiosity):

Hayne carried this team for years and did it all for us, and that seemingly entitles him to do what he likes (and I'm not having a go).

But then people seem happy to give Brett Kenny shit about anything he says or does.

Now, granted - he mostly gives negative feedback these days, but he won us Premierships and is an all-time great of the code and the club.

So why is the same respect not afforded to Kenny? Surely he's earned the right to be a cranky merkin, given what he did for the Eels?

I have great respect for kenny, yeah he does talk crap but I started seriously supporting the eels in late 80's early 90's and gee Kenny carried the side (along with sterlo until he retired) during some real tuff times more then what hayne had to do.

I'm extremely confident in saying that Chris Sandow will never play in an NRL Finals series.

I'm confident that without him next year we will be well and truly stuffed as there is no one else in the backline that can be a real attacking threat. Norman is the organiser. We have finishers and that's about it.

Oh, and Reece Robinson. He's fast and you can't teach that. You can teach defensive awareness and how to catch a ball... He may have missed that lesson. But you can't teach pace.

I bet you never thought he would finish in the top 10 of the dally m awards either. And finished 3rd out of all the halfbacks running around.

I agree that Sandow is going to be the major attacking threat next year. But if our only attacking play is a dummy and run yourself then we will not be making the Top 8, which is exactly what my original comment stated.

Sandow only polled that many points because he had Hayne making him look good.

Plenty of players have finished in the Top 10 in the Dally M Awards in teams that haven't made the Top 8. Hell...I could see Sandow winning the Dally M next year, doesn't mean we will make the Top 8.

If we start winning the battle in the middle, Sandow will be very dangerous.

I agree, unless we get foran/cherry I can't see who else on market would be better then Sandow.

With Hayne gone, Sandow won't be getting another contract and we have a host of blokes off contract at the end of next year, if we fail to recruit either Foran or DCE, I believe it's a complete failure.

Season 2016, we could have half our cap available and probably the only club who will have so much money available, it would be very poor if we didnt snag one of those blokes.

Hayne will never be returning to the club.

I agree Jodeci but are you able to elaborate any further on this? And why won't Sandow get an extension? Especially if it's at the right price. The competition isn't exactly flush with half backs and I can't see DCE going anywhere.

There is some bad blood between the club and Hayne/Beavis.

They have been trying to off load Sandow for over an year now.

Putting him in NSW Cup and hopeful that he would walk away and he didn't.

What's the right price?

He is on $400k a year now.

What do the top halfbacks demand?

Not saying he is a top halfback but he would be seeking at least the same or a bit more.
