Yeh, that's what I thought initially. The section of the draft eligibility rules that seems most relevant is this:

"PLAYER NOT ATTENDING COLLEGE. Any player who does not attend college is
automatically eligible for selection in the next principal draft that is conducted after four NFL regular seasons have begun and ended following either his graduation from high
school or graduation of the class with which he entered high school, whichever is earlier. If
four football seasons have not elapsed, he is ineligible for selection, but may apply to the
Commissioner for Special Eligibility pursuant to the conditions in the section below entitled
?Special Eligibility.? If said player is not selected in the draft for which he is eligible, he is
eligible to be signed as a free agent, unless he subsequently attends college and participates in college football. In such event, he shall become subject to the rules that are applicable to players who attend college. "

If the 'automatically eligible for selection' bit is taken literally (as some guys on the Reddit link on previous page believe is correct), then has actually gone through a draft without knowing it. It's pretty tricky though, and the rule was clearly written with US players in mind.

No team will draft Hayne. He is elegable to to be signed as a free agent. The most similar situation I have heard to this is about Michael Lewis, who was a beer truck delivery guy for budweiser. He kept trying out for nfl teams, and playing for semi pro teams until the New Orleans Saints gave him a shot and signed him in 2000. The guy worked his ass earned a spot on the team, then became a star kick returner and a wide receiver. here's his wikipedia page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Lewis_(wide_receiver)

Hayne at the moment has absolutely no thoughts about coming back to the NRL, he is focused on getting a contract in the NFL. We should know by June next year whether he makes it or not.

FORMER NRL star Jarryd Hayne has begun a US west coast tour of NFL clubs, with visits this week to the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks.
The Parramatta fullback shocked the rugby league world with his decision in October to quit the NRL and fly to the US in an attempt to score a contract in America’s multi-billion dollar NFL.
He has been training in secret in southern California and, according to multiple US media reports, Hayne was at the 49ers training facility on Monday and the Seahawks on Tuesday.
US website nationalfootballpost.com first reported the 49ers and Seahawks visits.
The Seattle Times reported on Tuesday “the likely scenario here is that Hayne will hold some workouts and then maybe sign with an NFL team after the season, when rosters can expand from their current 53 (plus practice squad, etc.) to the 90 that is allowed for training camp”.
“What is also likely is that you will hear about Hayne visiting lots of other teams,” Seattle Times columnist Bob Condotta wrote.
“So for now, while it’s interesting that Hayne paid Seattle a visit, I’d hold off anointing him a Seahawk.”

Well? We're waiting. And while you're at it - what's the 'combine'?

The 'combine' is an event in the off-season where all potential new players (i.e. largely those leaving the college system) are put through a series of football related physical tests (e.g. 40m dash time, strenght, vertical jump, capacity to take steroids quietly).

If he makes it, that would really be a mark of an athlete.

There are college players who played in last years BCS championship, Rose Bowl etc and couldn't get drafted or get off the practice squads, even failing to make CFL rosters. Will be a very interesting watch. The skills don't translate really , a massive amount to learn when pitched against guys whose only chance to make real money is to get on a NFL roster . Will need a fair bit of luck and the right coaching staff , what a ride for him

Wish him the best of luck but I will be amazed if he ends up being a success.

If he changed his name to Jarryd Hayne Jr his chances of success automatically increase to 50 percent. That figure increases a further 80 percent if the names "Jed", "Bubba" or "Billy Bob" are also included.
