Well I kind of am.

You infer that Price/Mary trying to turn him into a lock didn’t help his career.

But the Panthers did the same thing, under Gould’s watch as well?

Maybe that indicates he really wasn’t a great prop?

There’s no inference; the fact remains Merrin was originally turned into a lock under Price.

That’s fact.

Penrith (allegedly under Gould) continued that paradigm only.

Whether or not Merrin is a great prop is subjective. I will point out though that he progressed through the Dragons as a prop and that Wayne Bennett thought highly enough of him (in that position) to include him in the 2010 grand final side without a hell of a lot of experience.

Is that official?

I don’t see him listed when the 2019 squads were announced.
Thought I read it somewhere as to be part of their Top 30. Maybe I read it on this forum somewhere sometime, so it must be true.......maybe ;)

I believe that for some reason he is unwanted at the Warriors now. I say sign him up and let Mann go. He will surely displace Lafai as the season evolves.

Lomax and Herbert were the ISP centres for the year in 2018. Herbert and Lomax can both play fullback as well.
Possm...why would Dragons release him to sign him up again?

I’d strongly argue Merrin’s career was stuffed the moment the decision was made to move him to lock.

He’s a prop.

Talk about trying to shove a square peg into a round hole.

Potential unrealised,

He could’ve been so much better.
Yes he also listened to too much outside noise inflating his tyres while at the Dragons..then he started to play fancy and that was the end of him IMO. He learnt under Mick Weyman and he should of been focussing on running hard and straight busting the line cause he had the frame to do so, but for some reason started to skip and prance before the line and thought he was Artie Beetson in regards to offloading. Maybe that was a Price innovation..who knows.

Possm...why would Dragons release him to sign him up again?

Because his contract was up and he requested a release to go to the Warriors. Something has happened to cause the Warriors to change their mind. I'd love to see him back in the big red V as backup to Lafai. So if Lafai gets injured or lazy in 2019, he could grab his chances and show his worth.

Nope not at all.

Just don’t remember any of the guys you mentioned getting talked up massively in here. Not by me anyway, although I did have a hope Nichols would get more of a go at half.

But all the positive posts for our new recruits over the years probably get lost amongst all the drivel regarding the guys who are leaving.
There was plenty - I remember several people claiming that Nabuli would be an upgrade on Morris! Same way people are claiming that Ravalwala or Pearson will fill the workload that Nene carried this year.

The big issue with those leaving is the question of who replaces them/who we keep in lieu of them. We lost Merrin and go into the 2016 season with the weakest pack of forwards I’ve seen. Sure, Herberts not a star at the moment and may never be, but we currently have the weakest outside backs in the comp.

If I whinge about losing players, it’s because those players are rarely replaced by lesser quality players or players with less upside (like Mitch f**king Allgood).

JD has officially out of a Job at the Broncos and says he was looking at options in the NRL. I hope we are looking at him in some capacity

Apparently Barrett will replace Flanno. Seeing he is an ex-player they see him as the best fit apparently and he has NRL experience.

South Sydney are poised to announce that Jason Demetriou will be part of Wayne’s new world at Redfern.

The Daily Telegraph has been told that Wayne Bennett’s assistant coach at Brisbane will replace former South Sydney assistant coach David Furner, who has taken up the position as head coach of English Super League giants Leeds.

There is even a suggestion that Demetriou is in line to replace Bennett at Souths from 2022.

While not yet a done deal, the arrival of Demetriou, 42, at Redfern is expected to be announced before Christmas.

Brisbane sacked the man described as “Bennett’s right-hand man” on the day new Broncos coach Anthony Seibold arrived at Red Hill.

Seibold took his Souths assistant Peter Gentle with him to Brisbane.

A source has also claimed that several Broncos players had been in touch with Bennett and that life in Brisbane wasn’t as rosy as it should be.

Rumours also persist that the rabbitohs haven’t given up on signing rampaging Broncos forward Tevita Pangai Jr, despite him signing a one-year extension with Brisbane last week.

Pangai Jr was born in Sydney and played his junior football in the Newcastle district.

The arrival of Demetriou at Souths would be a surprise considering just last week Bennett said he would not be luring any former members of his Broncos coaching staff to his new club.

“No, he’s not coming,’’ Bennett said of Demetriou. “Not at the moment, nope.

“Never been part of the discussions here. None of the Broncos staff have ever been part of the discussions.

“They had the staff here, they were happy with the staff. That was where it stopped, it didn’t even start.

“When I was interviewed for the 2020 job, (South Sydney general manager of football) Shane Richardson told me I couldn’t bring staff with me.

“I mentioned bringing staff. He got in first and said they had a wonderful staff here and they were happy with them, they were all contracted.

“I said ‘that’s fine, Shane, I don’t want someone losing their job because I’ve turned up’. That’s how it has turned out.’’

Brisbane’s high-performance chief Jeremy Hickmans and chief analyst Scott Barker are also expected to be unemployed soon.

Coaching career[edit]
View attachment 9822

Keighley Cougars[edit]
Demetriou's contract with Wakefield expired at the end of 2010, and he was told that it would not be renewed. He initially joined the York City Knights for 2011, but a subsequent offer as player/coach for Keighley Cougars arose, and was accepted. In his first season in charge, Keighley gained promotion to the Kingstone Press Championship.

Northern Pride[edit]
Demetriou returned to Australia in 2013, becoming the head coach for the Northern Pride in the Queensland Cup. During his two seasons at the Pride, the club won back-to-back minor premierships, the 2014 Queensland Cup Grand Final and the inaugural NRL State Championship game. In 2014, he coached the Queensland Residents side, who defeated the NSW Cup rep side 24–16.

North Queensland Cowboys[edit]
In October 2014, Demetriou joined the North Queensland Cowboys as an assistant coach.[3] On 4 October 2015, Demetriou was a member of the Cowboys' coaching staff in the side's 17–16 Grand Final victory over the Brisbane Broncos.

St George Illawarra Dragons[edit]
In January 2016, Demetriou joined the St George Illawarra Dragons as an assistant coach and as head coach to their NSW Cup feeder team, the Illawarra Cutters.[4] In September 2016, he was named coach of the 2016 Intrust Super Premiership NSW Team of the Year.[5]

Illawarra Cutters

The Illawarra Cutters were 54-12 winners over the Burleigh Bears in their NRL State Championship fixture at ANZ Stadium, Olympic Park on Sunday.

Must be our coach for 2017!

Bump

Look at the rabble we are in now ( both in First Grade and Reserve Grade) can you believe we let this guy go.???

He had the Reserve grade absolutely humming which resulted in a premiership
( and before that a reserve grade Premiership in QLD ).

He was able to get players right on song.

He has now even served an apprenticeship under arguable the best coach ever .

Mary has done sweet FA , in his tenure , we have made the 8 , twice - just , and have had only 3 finals games with 1 win .

JD is exactly the right person we need now .
