Officially that is, David Gallop felt he needed to be seen to be doing something due to the serious allegations against Stewart. Allegations that he was cleared of in the end. Just a stupid knee-jerk reaction after all, the treatment of Stewart was a disgrace.
And here we are some 8 years later and nothing has changed in terms of consistency. Sure the NRL trots out nice words like culture, standards etc but they are no closer to defining what that looks like when it comes to punishing this sort of stuff. Very poor.

Excellent...so the best way to ensure Melb dont win the comp this year is to pay 3 girls to come out with sexual assult claims against Smith, Cronk and Slater 3 -4 weeks out from the Grand Final ?

And there is the genuine fear that members of the public chasing a pay day for a scoop/photos, will set this up themselves, without anyone having to pay them to do it.

Which is why the NRL dealing with issues outside of the courts is all a bit farcical. Radradra was dropped "for his own good" was the official line, which was a way of saying he is being dropped for disrepute, but the incident hasn't been proved so we'll make up some BS excuse. The Stewart incident has spooked the NRL, they don't want to drop someone for false allegations again, so they have started banning people for their own good (maybe they can call it the Greg Inglis defense...).

"Resting" players "for their own benefit" to sound tough when their is moral outrage through social media, but no proof yet of illegal behaviour, will eventually come back to bite the NRL, when a club/player sues them for loss of income, damaged reputation, and missing out on a chance at a title.

What about AFL?
Elephant juice has been rampant in the Anglo-Irish game for more years than i care remember that's why the brought in the 3 strike rule to cover up the games Elephant juice problem.
At least Rugby League is open and honest about its problems unlike the imported game from England and Ireland and its sweep sweep policy.

Sack them and the NRL agrees never to register the contracts again. I know people who when they do something silly and it has an impact on work etc, get sacked. Why should footballers be any different.

These idiots are meant to be elite athletes (very average in reality) and are paid $10K per week. They should not be drinking or drugs period even for performance alone.

Yeah spot on mate.

The whole thing was a farce.

These blokes are guilty, no doubt. Regardless of international league sanctions, there should be a stronger penalty at NRL level. It's just farcical the way the NRL stumble from one incident to the next and are entirely dictated to by the media as to their reaction.

Exactly, there should be some sort of set penalty or code that is black and white. It is all done on the run. Sometimes they let the club decide, such as in Josh Papalli's case, others they don't. There is no transparency. Found in possession of or taking illegal drugs, 4 weeks first offence for example. There is no consistency.

Cant all drug cases be refered to wada? Warnie got 2 years for his mums weight loss powder, sailor got 2 years for coke, swimmers are about to get shafted for missing drug tests, tennis players have to have their whereabouts known 24 hours a day, so why is league any different? If we take it out of the nrls hands we will see an end to the inconsistency of the punishments. It should not be left to the clubs.

Like I said 75k is still over triple the amount Jesse is giving up plus 6 more games. IF the NRL doesn't increase the punishment it will be ridiculous.

Please re-read my previous comments. I said they have both been dropped from the nzrl World Cup team. Which in itself is 5/6 games at $20k a game. Nzrl have released there statement say as much.

That's if he actually remains dropped for the world cup. We may just see this news story blow over and when it comes time to pick the NZ squad, he is named, along with a statement that whilst what he did was wrong, he has shown he regrets his actions, and has been working hard to making amends.

Well, all we can go by is there word. Andrew johns might make a come back if the knights make the finals.

What a shit thing to say.....
smith, cronk and slater are smart enough and been around long enough to remove themselves from those situations.

On the back of a clear mistake of absolutely stupid proportions, which they have owned up to, you want them rubbed out of the game for good??

NZRL have shown some real balls which could potentially damage their chances at the WC. The Storm, Titans and NRL look weak, much like Todd's leadership

Brett Stewart got a 4 week ban for being drunk you peanut.

It had NOTHING to do (officially) with the bullshit charges brought against him.

Try again.

These two idiots should cop a LOT more than 2 weeks. If it was not a Storm player involved you'd say so too. But please tell us all how that's not the case and you'd look at all identical situations the same.

Seems like your still a little butt hurt mate?

Happened 11years ago. Brett Stewart in "09" was the face of rugby league. He was blind drunk and carried on like a idiot at a manly function which then lead to the sexual assault allegations. 4 weeks was too much after the court preceding showed that the girl was lieing. I would of been happy with 1 game suspension. You can take up your issues with gallop. The Stewart's carried on like children after ban though. Probably still carrying on about it.

Remember the nrl hasn't handed there punishment down yet.

Have proctor or browmich been charged?

Why is that a shit thing to say? It is possible. Mave is pointing out that the lack of consistency and procedural fairness in the NRL's processes leaves it very open to exploitation.

And being "smart" or experienced doesn't help at all if someone makes allegations against you, until they are resolved. I've been through similar experiences, and if my work had been brought in to it I would have been "rested" indefinitely until I was cleared (which thankfully wasn't too long a period).

Maths is clearly not a strong point.

Brett Stewart in "09" was the face of rugby league
And?

He was blind drunk and carried on like a idiot at a manly function which then lead to the sexual assault allegations
Blind drunk? Not one police officer mentioned that Stewart was intoxicated in their reports.

4 weeks was too much after the court preceding showed that the girl was lieing. I would of been happy with 1 game suspension
So, the guy was not guilty of anything, apart from having a few drinks, and allegedly being drunk. Players get drunk every weekend. What exactly did he deserve even a 1 game suspension for? Even the allegation against him happened at his home. Not like it happened out at a night club.
