If he criteria is carrying your team to mediocracy to be goat, Hayne wins hands down 2 time dally M.

I've always said this , langer > Joey and Thurston

Langer dominated countless SOO and won qld series when SOO was a fair dinkum contest , joey only ever domnaited the one series

As for Thurston , the other would shyt all over him the way the refs control the game these days , the amount of piggy back penalties makes it easy for him to show his attack , also with all the wrestling the players can't tackle for crap anymore and that's why the give so many penalties away in the red zone as they can't defend a line. The others played in a era where players could tackle and actually play the game
Surely this part is a myth.

I've never seen older games in full but whenever i have the defence has looked laughable. Teams would seem to score purely on defence being shit. Nowadays the defences are so much better that the only way through is through set pieces.

I dont buy the whole 'the game was better in my time' argument just because of how much nostalgia clogs ones judgement.

What era are you referring to? Joey and Langer played in the 90s which was IMO the best quality footy. There was also more quality sides that endured. Brisbane, Canterbury, Manly, St George, Canberra all had hugely talented sides for long periods.

Cant even believe this is actually a debate. How old are you people? A Johns unparalleled and the greatest player of all time.

People these days are as thick as dog shit, so easy to jump on a media peddled band wagon to meaningless bullshit. Sells papers though yeh. Guess what , they know how many clicks a certain articles achieves, they know the masses must love the immortal concept. So guess what , they dredge up any f**ker that remotely can play the game and hold him aloft as a GOAT or future immortal . How about thinking for yourselves ? Now theres a novel concept.

This is very oversimplistic but in a nutshell it highlights why I rate Joey higher:

Attack:
Joey 10
Thurston 10

Defence:
Joey 9.5
Thurston 6.5

Now of course you could break it down a hell of a lot more; but given that the adage "defence wins Premierships" rings so true, I'm amazed that it's rarely taken into consideration in these debates.

They are both geniuses and the two best attacking players I've seen, so when I'm looking for a reason to separate I always come back to defence where Joey was MUCH better.

You could also add clutch plays into that mix, be it goal kicking, field goals or just icing the win with the right call, i think Thurston gets joey in that category, just.

Lockyer was pretty good at it too.

I think it’s what separates players like Daley,Freddy, and co from being in immortal talk.

Except in grand finals where Thurston had to rely on Michael Morgan. Even then he couldn't get it right and had to rely on Ben Derp to drop the pill off the kickoff.

Johns for me.
Although it was very interesting to see who other teams farewelled Thurston like no one else .

To those talking up Lockyer, he was great, but he didn't change the game so for that reason he is no where near as good as Johns

watched the GF in a pub (with the commentary off ) 7 guys in the group all commented on the howler Thurston was having. Remember 1 knock on led to a Broncos try in the next set.

Nearly fell off my chair when he got the Churchill Medal. Morgan won them the game.
