“These f**ks have just fired me... so as revenge I’m going to do my job extra well, make the finals, and make them more money before I leave.

That’ll show em!”

what other profession on earth would people think the best response to getting fired is to come in and do your job extra well during your notice period?

Um, I'm not particularly interested in what other profession on earth. Not sure how that's at all comparable.

That's your first thought, that John Morris might make some other people money...what about proving his ability for future employment? Potentially taking his team deep in the finals, if not win a premiership - as I presume he felt he could do as a coach at the start of the year? Sticking fat with those guys who have publicly backed him this week? Giving himself more experience in the NRL as a head coach, particularly through adversity?

Ivan Cleary almost won a premiership at the Warriors in a very similar situation. OK, almost as in we were never in the game particularly, but they made a GF. Obviously I don't know John Morris' situation but gee, given the fact his players seem to be right behind him, I'd like to think I'd push them all the way, build my own career, maybe even give the finger to a few people if that was my motivation. At the moment (and again, I don't know the full story) it seems like he's just gone f*ck you, I'm done.

I understand what your saying. However, Paul Gallan was asked on 100% Footy if John Morris would stay around for the rest of the season if they found a replacement for next year. He said he thought Morris would and want to complete what he was trying to implement with the time he had left. He said leaving would look like he's throwing his toys out of the cot and would be noted by other prospective clubs if chose that route. Morris chose that route that whether you want to interpret that way or there was more things behind the scenes that made it untenable for Morris continue remains to be seen.

I think Morris is sitting pretty right now, he will get another job based on what he has done with the sharks already, if he stays and the team starts losing and misses the top 8 he has lowered his stock not upped it. Leave now and other potential employers still have plenty of proof he can do the job.

Ivan Cleary situation was different. He had one and a half seasons left on his contract with the Warriors. He asked for further a extension on top of that. The Warriors were not going anywhere at the time and they quite rightly said no. But the Warriors were not actively looking for a replacement and his deal was hardly on the verge of expiring. Cleary who had talks with Gus Gould then asked if he could be released at the end of the season to take the Panthers job which the Warriors agreed.

We all know that in hindsight that was a huge mistake and the Warriors made the Grand Final. But I don't think the situation was similar and from the outside looking there wasn't the bad blood from both parties. Particularly considering the Warriors were gracious enough to grant Cleary a early release and let him coach out the rest of the season.

The Cleary situation wasn’t really that similar, Cleary asked for a release for the following year as he had an offer from Penrith.

Made the right decision to leave.

Authority has been taken away from him. Once you've lost that as a coach, you're f**ked.

It's been played out poorly by Cronulla. Such a decision should've been made at the end of last season, or at the end of this season. Something must be going on internally, or they're really struggling to attract players to have to have to pull the trigger now.

I get the disappointment, he's been shafted...replaced by a guy with less experience than him when he's been travelling reasonably well.

But why leave? Why not stay on the rest of the year, with a playing group that is very publicly and clearly behind him, and try to increase his credentials to get a gig in the future?

or the playing group realise he’s going and dog it. It happens. He’s best cutting bait now with his stock where it is.

Funny you say that, because as soon as round 1 started the Journos were on the back of the Sharks wanting to know what was happening in regards to Morris. The club takes its time and keeps its mouth shut the media lose its shit and now claims Morris is hard done by. You have hit the nail on the head though as Morris has very little pull in the NRL unlike Fitzgibbon.

We will take him as an assistant at the warriors next year. He can replace Brown when he inevitably fails.

I liked John and think he could improve the team given the loss of restraints he has had during his tenure. I hate how it has played out.

But he has a win record of 47%, took over a team that had made the Prelim Final, signed Townsend to a deal that gave a two-year player option, sort an extension with a significant pay increase midway through his contract and in the middle of Covid-break.

I hope Bomber goes on and has a successful career (and avoid the Tigers and Manly at all costs).

The latter was the reason given. Not sure I believe it, given how popular he appears to be with the current group.

If you believe comments made last night on NRL 360 players are supportive “publicly” but not what they were saying “privately”

what’s true? No idea but eventually it will come out

I do feel sorry for Morris. He got the Sharks to two finals appearances and were competitive in the early part of this season. Some say that he inherited a squad that made a prelim back in 2018, but that team was aging with the likes Lewis, Gallen and Prior just to name a few.

So in his tenure, be brought in a host of rookies like Nikora, Ule, Ronaldo, Kennedy, Rudolf etc. He had to deal with setbacks such as constant injjuries to Johnson, Moylan, Fifita, Graham, the release of Josh Morris and the drug ban of Xerri. Plus not been allowed to spend a full salary cap, thanks to past indiscretions from the club.

All things considering, I think Morris has done well and deserves another opportunity. Yes, his record against top 8 opposition isn't great, but the cards that he had to deal with weren't that flash either.

How many coaches do the Sharks need?
