Not suggesting IQ or rugby league intelligence (positioning/technique) can be coached - just that some players seem naturally low/lacking in it (and hence would come for free under the proposed 100 IQ cap.)

Is there an IQ cap for coaches?
We could have these superstars all at the one club, and still have room for more.

Well technically no... but I'd imagine a bit of intelligence helps with positioning and technique.

I think that would be natural ability which can't be coached

You don't think positioning and technique can be coached?

I think he's suggesting there is an inherent quality in players that adds to (or detracts from) their positioning and technique. Coaching is only part of what makes a finished product.

They can be coached, but the merkins with low IQs simply won't learn and improve!

Well it would depend. There’s IQ and then there’s Footy IQ. I don’t think they are one and the same.

For instance I knew a bloke who went to school with Darren Lockyer. Said he was an absolute genius when it came to footy but would be one of the dumbest people you would ever meet. I’m not sure there would be a high percentage of high IQs at most clubs.

Parra stalwart Hodgson to call time

Josh Hodgson has told his Parramatta teammates he has played his last game in the NRL.

The neck injury the veteran hooker suffered a couple of months ago, which required surgery, remains a problem. He met with the specialist during the week and it quickly became clear that he was risking his health and future by continuing to play. He may still require another surgery.
It’s a sad way for the career of one of England’s best imports to end. The Eels have held preliminary discussions with the NRL about a medical retirement. If it is deemed to be a career-ending injury, the NRL is expected to remove Hodgson’s 2024 contract from the salary cap next year.

All the medical documents and advice will be submitted to the NRL for assessment before they reach a decision.

Hodgson joined the club from Canberra in the off season. He signed a two-year deal but the second year was a mutual option. If the club took up the option he would have received a higher salary than if he took up the option. Hodgson was the one who took up the option earlier in the year on a deal believed to be around $350,000.

And related...
Lussick jets in
The Eels’ replacement hooker, Joey Lussick, is expected to land in Australia on Monday night. The Eels paid a $50,000 transfer fee to Super League club St Helens to lure Lussick back to the club immediately. The Saints wouldn’t release him until they had a replacement.

Meanwhile, the deal for Moses Mbye to leave the Dragons and join the Saints was signed off midway through St George Illawarra’s clash with the Tigers on Thursday night. Mbye returned to his locker after full-time to a message confirming his time in the NRL was officially over.

Parramatta powerbrokers have reportedly discussed Hodgson’s medical retirement with the NRL, with his 2024 contract reportedly removed from the salary cap.

However, the NRL still have to assess the injury and medical documents before confirming Hodgson can be medically retired.

Putting aside anyone's feelings about him as a footballer, imagine for a minute packing up your family incl, young children and making the move from Canberra to Sydney only to have to retire after 6 months.

The kids have had to settle into new schools, make new friends and then in a blink, their new life is gone. Does the Hodgson family move back to Canberrra, where they lived for 8 years or do they stay in Sydney's Hills district indefinitely.

You can understand why there is pressure to keep playing, moreso for those players that are nearing the end of their career and have family to consider. And why he would have grabbed the player option as soon as he was able.

He probably makes 700-800k in that 6 months.

Yeah, I feel for him.

He has had a good career and all the best to him it didn't work at the Eels but let's hope whatever he chooses to do next it all goes well.

I could see him moving back to the UK.
