What are all these stupid things and terrible personality traits that Locke has? We don't get fugg all of it over here in Oz.

The first i heard that he may be a dickhead was in that other thread that quoted Mick Luck.

Perhaps the move away from security and perceived safety is exactly what he needs to wake up?

Is on his final warning for repeated driving offences
has made several less than judicious comments on social media or in interviews about coaches/management
Had a sexual assault claim against him a while back. Though it got withdrawn, however he probably put himself a position that he shouldn't have to for the complaint to be made in the first place.
People close to the club will basically tell you that he's rough as guts, despite looking like a bit of a choirboy. Apparently comes from a pretty hard background.

You are correct Spacey, but if you take out point one and maybe three, you could be discussing any one of scores of (good) NRL players.

That Nobby is a Hood Rat (Beach Haven boy) is a given, but his life hasn't been that tough really. He has had great support from a lot of folks, particularly those from the Northcote Tigers Club. It's really up to him now to seize it with both hands and run with it. He will be in a position to make large amounts of money and I believe that, right now, he has reached the maturity to be able to deal with that.....at least I sincerely hope so as I have a lot of time for him.

I know ppl that know him v well, and I hear the stories. Nothing too serious but doesn't sound like someone who is 100% committed to trying to be a professional sportsman. This is his downfall, and the injuries won't have helped.

Agreed, most of them aren't angels, but it's when multiple things add up that a player starts to be seen as a liability.

Beachhaven is a weird place huh, kinda trashy little backwater at the arse end of the shore, like the dirty geniused cousin that the rest of the shore snobs keep out of sight cause they're a bit ashamed of it

We'd expect and appreciate that from plenty of our rugby league players.

I remember a comment once being made that if League was blue collar in Australia, it's black singlet in NZ, and mainly brown skinned to boot. Down my way in the Bay of Plenty a big percentage of the club Leaguies seem to have gang affiliations.

Sounds just like Narraweena (Hoppa's 'hood) on Sydney's Northern Beaches.

Long may that continue.

A mate of mine just told me the other day that the only reason he got to know rugby league was because he was in prison.

He was only half joking.

I remember Doc Murray , saw his first grade game, he got heavily talked up by the commentary as the next big thing after his good showing in the reserves ( they lost that GF aye....impressive effort to get there in 95 though ).

There are always kids from hard backgrounds that make you wonder how far they could have taken their talent.

Got invited to play social games against one the black power chapters in Papakura growing up, they were fairly respectful at the few games I played. They didn't bring their patches ( black Jeans Singlets Jerseys to a man though ).

Also played Crash on the old tennis courts out that way against a neighborhood street gang.

All useful ways to get to know the neighbors and be left well alone when you have to walk to the dairy on a dark night.

Out of all those roughies I thought two players might have made it in Rugby league if they chose that path.

A bit delayed but just watched the replay of CODE with Locke co-hosting

To sum it up I'm glad he is leaving he's a toss pot. We all have lost family members and it's sad he lost his Dad but moping around in a professional outfit wont do any party good

I hope he grows up a little overseas and turns it around. He has the skillset to reach higher places

Locke keen to combine with Tomkins

The arrival of Sam Tomkins in Auckland has effectively forced Kevin Locke out of the only NRL club he has ever played for, but any bad blood that exists between the pair certainly isn't being shown publicly.

At season's end Locke will head off to the Salford City Reds on a three-year contract, stating a desire to play the fullback position as the reasoning behind the big move.

That will never happen while Tomkins is fit and available for the Warriors, a fact which has become clear over the opening 10 rounds of the competition. But Locke will start alongside Tomkins on Saturday after being named on the wing against the Titans.

"He (Tomkins) is an awesome bloke, a class player and hopefully we can link up in the game," Locke said.

"We spoke at training, I said, 'Mate, you need to put me over the try-line, I don't want to be on a nudie run at the end of the year – we can't do that'."

After a spending the first month of the season recovering from a knee injury, Locke has played the last two matches off the bench for the Warriors.

Filling in at hooker, the role was foreign to a fullback who was once compared to Billy Slater.

This week against the Titans Locke gets his first start on the year, returning to the wing position where he debuted back in 2009.

Coach Andrew McFadden said mid-week that Locke still had a big role to play in his final months at the club, and hoped he would flourish on the flank.

"I want him to be in the game. Obviously he plays a different style of wing, but the more times he can be involved in and around the ball the better," McFadden said.

"That is going to be the challenge this week on the wing. Usually at fullback you are built into play, but I am sure he will add something this week for us."

Most Warriors fans telegraphed Locke's departure from the day Tomkins put pen to paper at the club; having two international fullbacks on your books in the salary cap era simply isn't economical.

Given the quality he has displayed in six seasons of first grade, where he has scored 26 tries in 87 appearances, it came as a surprise to hear Locke was heading to the Super League competition

"It is not that I couldn't have worked hard to push Sammy (Tomkins) somewhere else, it was just a case of getting to play fullback, a position I love playing, so that is the reason why," he said.

"I want to finish strong, I have still got a few more games left in the season. I have new challenges and a new future for me next year, but that doesn't start until next year."

The move away from New Zealand affects much more than just footy; Locke has a one-year-old son, Louie, who will remain in New Zealand with his mother.

"I have a little kid now, his mother and I aren't together so it will definitely be tough leaving the little fella over here."

There might be a lot more to Kevin Locke and the Warriors this season.

He could still play a major role. As it is right now he's fantastic backup for the current starters.

I watched Salford play today on TV and they have a strange team made up of veterans (Meli, Morley, Hansen, Puletua), a few 'characters' (Hock, Chase) as well as 'rejects' from other teams. I wonder if Locke will last 3 years? I can see him back in the NRL at some stage

Locke is a whole class above the ESL, he'll dominate big time if he wants to.

Locke will be measured against Bowen who re found form and Zac Hadaker who can be brilliant.

It's not going to be an easy ride when he comes up against Wigan /Warrinton/Leeds/Huddersfield

If Locke thinks the top of the ESL is soft he will get a hiding over there.

I think he will thrive if he he goes all out.

There are plenty of ESL players I would love to see running around for us :

1. Hardaker
2. Charnley
3. Hurrell
4. Leroy Cudjo
5. Ryan Hall
6. Tomkins
7. Johnson
8. Chris hill
9. James Roby
10. Lillyman
11. Bukuya
12. Matulino
13. Sean O'loughlin

So Seven starting players I'd swap for their best without batting an eyelid.

thats the thing, " if he wants to". i cant see him lasting the 3 years, he has no support network, family nothing there just a couple of ex team mates. if he wants to grow up and act like an adult moving away from nz is not going to make it happen

Those games will be roughly equal to NRL games in terms of skill and quality.
Locke is a proven success against the best of them in the NRL.

The rest should be pretty breezy, even Tomkins stated that the ESL is completely different in that you're only really watching out for the big teams among plenty of soft games.

But like I said Locke will succeed *if he wants to*.
The other factors that R&S mentioned could turn his trip into a failure, I personally think he was better off at somewhere like the Dogs.
