No they were just broke. It didn't stop them from signing players though. Here's their side for round 1:

1. Walker
2. Donald
3. Williamson
4. Stephenson
5. Hicks
6. Mullane
7. Monaghan
8. Heckenberg
9. Hollingsworth
10. Donnelly
11. Harris
12. Haumono
13. Menzies

14. Hopoate
15. Leuluai
16. Watmough
17. Dunley

Not a great side, but far more balanced than us last year, and by the end of the year the Stewart brothers were in first grade.

wow what a hot team.

A lot of those players were past their prime or were still years away from being decent players.

If you lined up the below side, without taking into account at what stage of their career those players were actually at it looks pretty good too.

1. Hayne
2. Burt
3. Walker
4. Whatuira
5. Hicks
6. Mortimor
7. Robson
8. Mannah
9. McGuire
10. Fui
11. Hindmarsh
12. Smith
13. Maitua

14. Keating
15. Poore
16. Webb
17. Shackleton

They can plan for it yes. But a coach is only going to come here if there position is available, otherwise they'll take another job with another club who is willing to offer them a position, or extend their existing contract with their current club. It's the same as it is with player signings, you've got to strike when the iron's hot or you just miss the boat.

Who said it had to be a tenured coach? Half the forum seems to be calling for JT, or Folkes, or even Anderson?

You brought up Hasler. Sure didnt do him any harm being there 8 years, but you convieniently forget he improved the side nicely in the initial couple of years to be the force they were when he left.

As you saw in my last post, they didn't have any overpriced hacks or bad attitudes stinking up their salary cap.

Hasler got to start from scratch. Kearney won't have that chance until next year or even 2014 if Hayne is the problem.

Doubt it, they were a massive rabble when he took over

No they were just shit and because they had gone broke, they had plenty of room to move under the salary cap. From the word go.

Hasler was able to start getting the kinds of players he wanted to the club from the word go. His best signing was probably Noel Cleal.

John Lang also took over a rabble club called Penrith with issues, took them to a premiership win in no time - you get my drift about you cherry picking, i can do the same

No I'm glad you mentioned Lang. Won the comp with Penrith, but couldn't do a f**king thing with Souths.

Kind of proves my point that it's not all about the coach. If anything it shows things are largely out of the coach's hands.

True, but if you hadnt noticed, its also not easy to hold onto a coaching gig with a 20% odd winning record, of course SK is the exception.

Michael Hagan had won 26 games (out of 37) by round 9 of his second year. That's over 70%

Must have meant he's a great coach hey? He'd also won a premiership.

SK holds the record now of worst start to our clubs history in 50 years. You ,and the majority of us eels fans expected far better this year. We just seem to be going backwards rapidly. All any Parra fan wants is a steady improvement, not a downhill spiral after last years promising buildup

I'm not as bothered by our record as I am by why we are playing so shit. Surely you don't believe it's all because of the coach.

Mate they came third last. Try and keep up.

You can defend him all you like. His record is the second worst of all time for parra.

1 from 9 & yet you think he is gonna be special. The sad thing for kearney when he is gone he will be unemployable & that for me will be justice to what he has done to this club

A lot of those players were past their prime or were still years away from being decent players.

The young ones were one year away from being regular finals players. And how many of them were past their prime?

The only players over 30 were Walker, Menzies and Hopoate (all 31).

The rookies that year were Stephenson, Cleal, Robson and Morwood.

Almost the entire team were in their mid 20s.

If you lined up the below side, without taking into account at what stage of their career those players were actually at it looks pretty good too.

And what if you do take into account their ages?

Over 30s:
Burt (30), Whatuira (30), Webb (30), Walker (31), McGuire (31), Hindmarsh (32), Moimoi (32) and Hicks (34)

Rookies:
Morgan, Allgood, Rogers, Loko and Sio

So the 2004 Sea Eagles had three players over 30, while the 2011 Eels had eight. They had four rookies to our five.

I don't know how he will turn out. The fact he still has the confidence of the board despite his record says they must see something special in him.

What a vindictive little merkin you are.

So special that latest reports say that they plan to get another coach to help him. He must be really special

According to some of those forum members with insider info, Osborne got up to all kinds of s**t without the board being aware of it. I kinda think they've been fed bulls**t by people wanting to shift the blame, but if these forum members are correct then the board don't know as much as you think they do. The boards are just fans like us remember, they are just successful businessmen/ women with contacts which allows them to get elected to the board in the first place. It doesn't mean they are any smarter than you or I Poupou, they just get to sit in on a meeting once a month.

If they're more successful then they probably are smarter than you or I (well not either of us, but the average league fan). Even if they're not smarter they still certainly have the skills and experience to make much better decisions than the average league fan.

I completely reject the popular opinion that the board members are a bunch of f**king idiots. Just like I reject the popular opinion that Gillard and Abbott are both imbeciles that know f**k-all about anything.

It's just tall poppy syndrome by small-minded people. Their opinions are less than worthless.

Quite correct Poupou. But whether they have enough knowledge in this particular field is what is open to debate. They want what's best, but whether they have the footy knowledge or experience to determine what's best is something different completely. I couldn't be f**ked discussing the board and elections, MITS and bartman can do all that. Just saying that because you're an expert in something doesn't mean you're an expert in something in other fields. I'm sure our current board have the best of intentions, but intentions without expertise can often take you backwards rather than forwards.

Why wouldn't they just f**k him off then?

Because they'd look like absolute morons, you thick dickhead. Can't you get that through your head. They made a massive f**k up by sacking DA for a rookie, sacking him now would only concede that.

You've mentioned hayne several times. SK has shown he won't take shit from players, (shack, tahu and possibly egj) and is willing to show them the door or keep them in reserves.

If hayne was that bad, don't you think SK would of also shown him the door.

Have you ever stopped to consider maybe SK is stinking the joint out?????? Or that isn't possible.

You need to understand that Poo is not playing with a full deck. He is as much a cancer to this forum as SK is to the Eels.

We have heard from a few people that say Nolan will leave if SK does........to me that is a very good reason not to get rid of him!

personally, I'm not 100% convinced of that and I do believe Nolan has signed a 2 year extension whether it was on the proviso that the current head coach needs to be there or not, I'm not quite sure.
