Well the article said they are selling 5,500 tickets for the game. I have been there countless times and no way could you fit 8,000 in there IMO. 6/7k max.

So with two days to go that points to a crowd of maybe just 10,000?? Maybe a few more Kiwis will buy tickets on the day to push it just over 10,000?

Hmmm so maybe 7-8,000 for the Fiji vs France match? I was really hoping they would get close to 10,000 like the Scotland v France match.

Man I am so sick of these crap crowds...

I'm sorry, but as a journo pointed out last week in the Newcastle Herald, the Yawnion WC managed to cram 48,000 into Suncorp for the Wannabees and Romania for a 90-8 scoreline...

This RLWC has been given almost a year to sell tix. PNG and NZ at Skilled should be capacity.

Last Sunday should have been capacity.

This Sunday coming in Melbourne should be capacity.

Newcastle should be capacity...

Both Semis shouls be capacity...

Where is Colin Love...?? He should be selling monorails in Springfield if these games aren't capacity...

Where is he...??

Hello....????

Why are we expecting 6000 at Samoa vs Tonga when this game has the potential to be the most brutal game of Test Rugby League ever played...??

FFS, the matches are fantastic. I was at the SFS on Sunday. I will be at Bluetongue on Nov 5th...

Where is everybody...??

There are a lot of reasons why the Rugby Union World Cup drew significant larger crowds than what the League one is drawing.

Public Perception of the Product:
The 2000 RLWC caused a situation where the Rugby League World Cup was seen as a 'tarnished' brand, verses Unions World Cup where in 2003, it was riding on a lot of goodwill from the success of the Wallabies in 99 and the large international program Union had running at the time.

Advertising Budgets:

Rugby Union had millions to spend on advertising, League barely had thousands to spend.

Sponsorship:
Union has the strength of being able to sign partners like Coke, Reebok, Visa and so on for long deals that cover multiple World Cups which help give further cash to underwrite and push a tournament. By League not having one for 8 years, there was not a sponsor family for international league to draw upon, and thus it was the NRL's sponsorship family that had to come to the party.

Ticket Prices:
Especially for low key matches in the Union World Cup you could purchase a significant portion of tickets for between $5-$7. There were also plenty of giveaways and so on. For whatever reason in League, a low key match will still cost you between $15 - $35, which is a fair bit more expensive and for a tarnished, less promoted product, does make for a harder sell... on the plus side it has meant a fair bit of revenue still for the RLWC group

We have to be realistic with the crowds, and so far the crowds aren't too bad. Honestly, outside of say Soccer and Union, what other sport would draw larger crowds for its World Cup tournament?

Cricket maybe...though recently for games not involving Australia they have been struggling and also the 2003 and 2007 CWC's averaged 11,193 and 13,176, figures we are currently ahead of.

I was surprised Yak that the promoters/organisers didn’t run down the rugby family path of the 2003 RWC.

Where every registered player (whether current or recent) was sent a brochure and offered an early right to tickets and a discount on certain games. They also forced people to buy tickets to minor games buy creating two game combos for a major game (vs a minnow none the less) and making you pay for tickets to the minow v minow contest.

Surely this could have been done for the RLWC (especially the minor games). I don’t know if junior league passes are still areound but these surely could be valid most games, this forcing the parents to buy tickets to take the young ones along.

Its noted that most of the tournaments sponsors are from the NRL family, and that marketing budgets would be no where near that of the union cup. I think we are also paying the price for playing too many games in Sydney and none in Adelaide or Perth (but I understand the government dollars would affect this).

This being said, i still cant beleive that we might not crack 10,000 for the tonga v somoa game.

I was thinking the same thing as Coastbloke about crowds - but when you look at it like that, we're actually going brilliantly with so much more room to improve.

Give the friggin tickets away if you want to help shake the image of a crap tournament. The empty seats do more harm than the little revenue in the long run.

I was hoping they were going to do this as well. It kills two birds with one stone:

Promotes the WC and pushes tickets for the smaller games.

Hopefully after this WC they can review it and make all these improvments for the 2013 WC.
