Horses for courses and each to their own.

In the stage of world history and australian history, when we fall off the perch 99.99 % of us will be considered insigniciant little arseoles .....

The Press is mightier then the sword.

i have my own opinion of the Big Goanna ( his nickname years ago) and I will leave it at that.

Trying to bring back vicious rumours that have been through the courts and disproven?

You must be getting desparate.

ultimately he had smaller pockets than castle rupie, the good losing to scum
and by good include a massive dose of self interest
sad for the family, he did great thinks for cricket
his league leagacy to me is mixed

the greater tragedy will be if the idiot son [who now has a real reason to cry]
sells channel 9 to castle rupie
add telstra selling its share of foxtel to .........rupie?

and rugby league is still in the bush, lost and covered in mozzie bites

god iam glad now they gave norths the boot!!!

To me, being a great Australian includes being a great person and ambassador for the country. I don't think Packer fits into either of those categories. But I suggest we agree to disagree.

you didnt know the person did you?? only what the media portrayed him as...

but i agree on your last point...

If he did such wonderful things for cricket then why did we have to watch the Ashes on SBS???

Hmm, actually that was a good thing, it meant we got much better coverage than if Nein had shown it.

Cricket is still as boring as ever.

Symonds and Hayden's century plus partnership the other day was hardly boring with 8 sixes between them. The thrilling Ashes finish with England escaping by 2 runs was hardly boring. There is alot more exciting cricket played these days and Kerry Packer can take alot of credit for that by introducing World Series Cricket. One Day Cricket has added alot more to the game, with batsman scoring faster, different fielding innovations and bowling attacks needing to become more versatile to counter act more aggressive batting.

One-day cricket was played for many years in England before Packer made his takeover.

Packer's contribution was to ensure that the players were paid adequately. I was looking at the ABC cricket book for the 1972 Ashes tour. The team was in the UK from April through September, and did not get paid. A small daily allowance - that's it.

Yes I know. But there was no regular international tournament in Australia each summer before Packer's intervention. There was only the World Cup in 1975 and they still played in whites and the matches were 60 overs a side.

Packer did exactly the same thing to cricket that Murdoch tried with rugby league. He demanded broadcasting rights be given to Nine instead of the incumbent broadcaster, the ABC. He started his own "rebel" competition by signing all the top players when the ACB wouldn't give him the television rights. The difference is that the ACB capitulated eventually and sold out to Packer. Interesting that Packer is now lauded by many of the people who at the same time are still villifying Murdoch for Superleague.

You know full well what im talking about Quigs

what you were referring to was a big 80s underworld investigation where they were trying to work out the identity of a weapons and drug baron. The name Kerry Packer was often thrown up in that investigation as being this person. The alias for this person was Goanna.

How would you appreciate inferences being made to you being a drug dealer or kiddy fiddler, even if it was disproven in an investigation?

You sir, need to get the life

It my learned friend is what you are referring too. Did I mention that, correct me if I am wrong here. I referred to the Gillies Show when me old mate Maxie was dressed up as a big Goanna - Godzilla style. Rexxy got it right.

But hey, you know more about what I am talking about then I know what I am talking about so in the future If I feel like posting a comment or start a thread I will give you a call and you can post it for me because you will know what I am going to say.

Did I say that or did you say that for me. Crikey I'm confused. Are those voices I hear in my head --- are they you Moffo.?

Cheers

Now that the Big Fella is gone, what are the chances that we'll finally get to see the rest of "Australia's Naughtiest Home Videos"??

I've been waiting for years...
